quoting @secret-try "This is all speculation"
Yep
The report in 2021 was meant to quell the worries about prematches, because getting a prematch was and continues to be an extra source of anxiety for applicants.
I wish it had the reassuring effect it should have had, but it continues to be one of the most common questions I see on SDN.
As far as I know, this "number of prematches report" has not been a yearly publication.

Mr. Jasso (TMDSAS director) stated at the time of that 2021 report that TMDSAS would not release which schools were attached to which numbers.
We can get an inkling of it by watching our members announce their news.
@secret-try assumes the 170-prematch school was UTSW, I at the time assumed it had been UTMB. Who's right, or is neither of us right?
It doesn't matter. Schools can and do change their strategy over time

Please take a prematch offer as a relief, in knowing you will be attending med school, this summer, either here or somewhere else.
It is not either or. It is both. It causes anxiety until we get a pre-match offer. Once we receive a pre-match offer, it also offers relief and has the reassuring effect.

hi! interviewed here back in december. wanted to send a letter of continued interest and to update about research awards won and stuff like that. i also have a research article that has been submitted and is under review. would that be good to send?

Anyone apply for student housing? Sent them a check with application about 2 months ago but never heard anything back.

I imagine after Match Day they will go through applications for housing again, some people who already applied might end up going somewhere else

I never heard back. I called their office and they said they received it, so I am assuming that means I am on the waitlist?

Yeah you are. Not sure if they have one prepped yet but last year there was a WL printed out that you could ask what your position was on at their table during the MS-0.

FYI, if your applied for a 1B/1Ba apartment you're unlikely to get off of it this year though (I'm still on it from last year lol).

Good to know, I will have to call sometime next month and find out

Was the 2B WL bad last year? Or were people able to get spots?

From what I recall, everyone who applied for those by the end of January (and possibly later idk for sure) got off the WL. I think you're in a good spot.

That said, maybe have one or two alternate places in mind to be safe.

Can you apply to only one choice?
Are you still trying to get in next year? I know people who left and went back again because it was so much cheaper than outside.

I'm pretty sure you can apply to both because the application has multiple options you can check (someone who has applied more recently might be able to confirm/deny this).

I'm seriously considering moving there this coming summer when the wait-list gets to me but I'm hesitant to say for sure depending on where I end up with summer research. It isn't terribly more expensive where I'm at now and, aside from the shuttle service (which seems to be hit or miss according to my friends at med park now) it's not as alluring as it was for me as an applicant before. It's a "probably" right now for me I think.

is there one more wave of prematches. just trying to get some peace of mind before i enter my rankings lol

Do they have 2 interview dates per week?

I see 2 or 3 admissions for 12/4 given out on 20th.
yeah they have two a week. one on wednesday and another on saturday. really hoping to hear smth so i can rest before match lol.

Its possible they may announce a few more before match but I would be surprised it is because they missed that one day assuming they did (not everyone posts here). It could include all dates if there were interviews since first week of December.

I'm predicting another wave this Friday, Jan 17th (which is when it was last cycle), or if not then early next week. If I'm right, slide me some money please.

Just called them asking if I could change my waitlist from a 1B to a 2B, they said that as now they won't have options for either until 2026-2027 💔

Whattttt bummer!!!

Can any current students comment on where else to stay near UTSW? I was really hoping to live within a short drive/long walk from campus

There's a housing survey students are filling out currently that will be made available to y'all by the end of the month.

It'll cover the distribution and ratio of graduate and/or medical students at complexes in the area.

What's the likelihood of getting accepted for the match day if you weren't pre-matched? I heard UTSW is very pre-match heavy.

I know this has probably already been asked, but I wanted to ask current students just exactly what the atmosphere is like now that you have been there a full semester? Just want to evaluate how the students feel about their workload, how the school supports them, and if it is more stressful than say Long or McGovern to a point to where you may suggest someone who does not want to be drowned or taken out of their personal life should maybe not go there? Please be brutally honest!

there is a good deal of movement for us on match day (a good number of pre-matches choose Baylor > UTSW).

From what I have gathered from casual conversations with my classmates I'd wager (NOT hard data just anecdotal) 40-50% of our class pre-matched here with the rest getting in on match day. That said, even though a lot of this "movement" is over with before you open your match results, there is also a noteworthy amount of additional acceptances that roll in off the WL as well (students going OOS, off the Baylor WL, etc.)

They would have lost a few to Baylor during match for sure.

The atmosphere at UTSW is serious, but (clearing the air here again) it's definitely not cutthroat. People here are excited to be part of this community and are very supportive. While we know how to enjoy ourselves, if you're looking for a laid-back, "chill" medical school vibe, UTSW probably isn't the best fit.

That said, being part of a community of hardworking individuals is incredibly motivating—you naturally rise to that level of commitment. It's a place where you’re pushed, but it's all for the benefit of your development and your future patients.

I can’t personally speak to the experiences at Long or McGovern, as I don’t attend those schools. If you’re considering them, I’d suggest reaching out to current students there to get their perspectives and then comparing that to what you hear from us at UTSW.

Hi, if there are any current UTSW students here I have some questions:

-Are there internal rankings maintained throughout the preclinical period although it is P/F? If so, is that info released to residencies when applying or only used internally for things like AOA?

-During the preclinical years, approximately how many days of the week are there mandatory in-person sessions?

Thanks so much for your time!

1. No internal rankings during pre-clerkship. Pre-clerkship grades after the first semester however do make up about 12% of the variance of what goes into AOA, but it's based on numerical cut-offs as opposed to being in a top percentile (so no direct incentive to be a gunner since everybody can get the points if they perform well enough)
2. The curriculum is transitioning from in-person lectures to virtual lectures with in-person case-based/problem-based learning sessions, and since attendance for those is graded, you have to be on-campus. Looking ahead at the heme block next month, there are like 3/20 days where we don't have to be on campus.
Hope that helps!

17 days out of 20 on campus? Is this the norm? and will this be changing for next year's class lol

Yes this is the norm.

In first semester we had anatomy dissections so that made coming to campus a must. Now, in second semester, there has been an increase in problem, team, and case-based learning sessions requiring in-person attendance usually 3-4/5 days a week.

UTSW tweaks it's curriculum (usually for the better) every year but I doubt in person requirements are going to go down much for y'all.

Would it be for the whole day or just for like a few hours? Because at that point when would you even find time to study lol.

Hi! I was wondering if a UTSW student could give a general breakdown of what a week looks like during the first and second semesters of MS1 year. I didn't get a chance to ask that during the student panel and am curious about it since I know schedules can vary a lot by school.

First semester you were more likely to have mandatory events in the morning and afternoon on the same day.

Now, in the second semester, the trend so far is that mandatory events are more likely to be once a day for an hour or so giving you the rest of the day to do what you need to.

You'd be surprised how much work you can get done if you're efficient/organized with your time. Our 1st semester is no joke but if you take your schoolwork seriously there will be no issues and you'll have a fair bit of free time to relax/hang with friends (at least I did).

In the first semester, most days start with optional in-person lectures in the morning, which are recorded. Afternoons are usually for PBLs (Problem-Based Learning) or TBLs (Team-Based Learning). On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, you have protected time with your mentors (called colleges), but you typically only have something scheduled on one of those days, so you get the other afternoon off. Fridays are quiz/exam days, which happen pretty much every week, with each class rotating when they hold them.

There’s a lot of variety between courses and their requirements (eg, you'll have 1 or 2 anatomy dissections in the afternoon on Mon, Tue, or Fri), but this is the general flow of things.
