2024-2025 UT Tyler

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had an interview with UT Tyler last cycle and my secondary was submitted on 6/15 (direct ties this cycle) and I haven't heard anything so hopefully they are just waiting for my new mcat 🙂
This was from another schools reapp seminar (TTUHSC) but they said that they wait until the new mcat is in before considering an application.

Based on the small class size, does this school even do prematches? The one thing I just can’t fathom is the number of interviews they’d give for such a small class. I would expect a school like this to be more conservative like 150 interviews or 200 (max)

Last year they sent a small number of pre-matches, but not until January when they had concluded their interviews. They interviewed 272 for a class of 40.
It was still in time for Texans to do their rank list.

I was under the impression that Tyler sent 40 prematches that they hand selected. Then if one of the 40 prematches do not go to Tyler, then they get a few off of the match.

This is what they do, they'd call you by a certain date and say you're on the prematch list.

That does seem to be what they did last year.

Also another seemingly disappointing statistic for us regular MD applicants is 15/40 seats go to their special programs such as JAMP, BS/MD, early programs, etc. The reality is its probably like 257 interviews for 25 spots. 272-15=257. However, that still means you have a chance!

Not necessarily - their website says it is up to 15, and these students have to go through the same process as everyone else. Additionally, their resources will be much different from many others applying to medical school. If you look at the partnering institutions, their 4-year graduation rates are quite low save for SFA at about 55% and UT Tyler right above 60%. Others are as low as 15-20%. I would reckon that these students are still fighting an uphill battle.

It does seem disappointing and discouraging, but UT Tyler is very dedicated to trying to keep as much of their local talent as possible as the area does have a great need for specialized physicians. Many East Texans have to go to Dallas/Houston for care, which can be a large burden due to the distance. An acceptance that goes to someone that will just move away is a wasted one if we're strictly talking about the mission of the school.

Perhaps in the future there will be more spots as the program develops. Their new medical education building will be done in time for the incoming class to enjoy in July 2025.

Ah so they’ll call you in January?

Edit: also, if I do get an II, am I on equal footing with all other applicants? I ask because I know not having direct ties is my biggest weakness on my app honestly.

I'm not completely certain however I believe they offered one batch earlier (don't really know exactly when) and then one batch later (January area).

You don't HAVE to have direct ties, the reason direct ties are valued is because the data shows that an applicant having direct ties highly correlates with their likelihood to practice there. The ultimate goal of the UT Tyler SOM is to equip ETX with physicians, if you can convincingly demonstrate that and have at least a few tangible things on your record to back it up you could definitely get an A in my opinion.

1. Our mission is to improve the quality of life and reduce health disparities in our rural East Texas region. Please indicate (select one) your connection to East Texas as outlined in our county map and explain below: (250 words)

I have direct ties to the East Texas region (born, graduated high school, community college, undergraduate, etc.)
I have indirect ties to the East Texas Region (family members, in-laws, visited East Texas frequently, attended summer camp in East Texas, etc.)
I have ties to a rural region with similar characteristics to the East Texas region (size, demographics, health disparities, etc.)
I do not have ties to the East Texas region; however, I’m interested in practicing in this area after graduation.
I do not have ties to the East Texas region but am still interested in attending the UT Tyler School of Medicine.

2. Are you a reapplicant? (Yes or No)

3. Are you a reapplicant to UT Tyler SOM? (Yes or No)

4. What have you done between the last application cycle to make your application stronger? (No Character Limit)

5. The mission of the UT Tyler SOM is fourfold:
Community Engagement: Embed the School of Medicine within East Texas, focusing on communication, responsiveness, inclusion, and community. The School of Medicine in East Texas, and everything we do will be in partnership with our communities.
Education: Recruit, support, and develop a diverse and representative healthcare and research
workforce from East Texas, focused on reducing health disparities in East Texas.
Research: Develop an array of biomedical, clinical, preventive, translational and population-based
research programs focused on understanding and eliminating health disparities in East Texas.
Clinical: Expand access to top-quality healthcare in the local communities of East Texas by developing and implementing innovative healthcare systems and leveraging existing infrastructure and programs.

Why are you interested in applying to UT Tyler’s SOM? (500 words)

6. Please describe a significant personal challenge you have faced, one which you feel has helped to shape you as a person. Please include how you got through the experience and what you learned about yourself as a result. Examples may include: moral or ethical dilemma, a situation of personal adversity; or a hurdle in your life that you worked hard to overcome. (500 words)

7. Optional question (highly recommend): Please use this space to share with the committee any additional information that may help us evaluate your candidacy that is not addressed elsewhere in the application. (500 words)

Are we supposed to do #4 if we arent a reapplicant? I was ready to submit but Im unsure if I have to complete that section

last year, at "second look" on zoom they had given out all 40 prematches by match day BUT i know people who didn't get a prematch and matched on match day!

Yes, that can happen naturally within the TMDSAS Match if a person who has a prematch from UT Tyler didn't rank UT Tyler as #1 on their rank list.
Then the TMDSAS Match system sorts all that out so UT Tyler has a full class as of Match Day.

Does anybody know the kind of attire that should be worn to the meet and greet the day before the interview? Casual, business casual, etc?

They directly suggest business casual, and that’s what most wore
Appreciate the response! What was the environment like? Sitting or standing and talking to everybody? Or something like a speaker gets up with a microphone and we just listen?

Standing the entire time, some faculty and current students will be there and you just kind of walk around and mingle with whoever you feel like.

Come and go sort of ordeal? Or should you stay the whole hour and a half? Sorry with all the Qs. I’m from way out of town and trying to plan hotel check-in times in order to make it.

Looking at it as an ordeal is not the best mindset for this casual meeting. If it makes you anxious maybe check in to your hotel and relax before your interview day.

They said no one involved with the interview process will be there during the meet and greet.

I'd suggest what wysdoc said. Unlike previous years where Tyler started out with 12 interviewees usually all from East Texas and then ramping up to 24 per day with some out of region, this year they started with 24 and actually most were not from East Texas, about half were from Dallas area. I recommend staying the entire time because you get to talk directly with the dean, but nobody from the meet and greet will have any input on your decision and will not be at the MMI stations the next day, so it really is laid back.

I completed my secondary on 7/25. Adjacent East Texas resident, non-trad, primary care and serving the underserved population focus. I have not received any II, is this mean my application is not being considered for this cycle? UT Tyler SOM is my top choice 😢

They will be sending interviews over the next several months. Your profile sounds like a good match but there still might be a wait because you can’t all be first

Thank you for your reply, my Casper score is in the 1st quartile, I’m afraid this caused my application to be screened out 😢

Did anybody else not receive a confirmation email or message when signing up for yall's interview date in the secondary portal?

I had a 1st Quartile in both this cycle and the last and have gotten II's both times. You won't be screened out. Casper is just one of many categories that they consider when evaluating your app.

I also got 1st quartile and interviewed with UT Tyler. I don't think it hurts you if you're strong in other areas. Just one piece to the puzzle.

Got some info today that UTT plans on sending prematches in October and January this cycle, so a bit earlier than previous cycles!
** Edited for accuracy, confirmed this at interview day.

Hi I have not received a secondary. Application transmitted 6/27. Does every get a secondary? Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should do? Kind of concerned.
In addition to what wysdoc recommended, feel free to reach out to the school if you aren't sure if something is missing. They are very kind and inviting to ask questions. The first time I applied, I had no idea what I was doing and they always helped steer me in the right direction.

Question - Did y'alls Casper and Duet scores autopopulate under the status section when you got your secondary?

I just had my app transmitted and received my secondary login link and everything today. When I login, it tells me on the status section that my Casper and Duet scores are not received. I checked other TMDSAS school status tabs and they are in for the others. My DO school apps already have Casper scores too. I took my Casper exam at the end of June, so it's definitely been plenty of time to be received, unless they only mark it so after they review the scores...

Just wanted to ask because I'm not sure if this is something I should email admissions about or if it's normal.

Probably when you send in your secondary essays they will check to see if your other components are complete

+1 II!!! Complete 7/5

Also, not technically from East Texas! Live north of Houston with family ties

Depending on where you are, you might be considered ET. Broadly speaking, the school's mission is to help train physicians who will hopefully practice in the ET region. Lots of hospital employees have family or ties to the Houston area and it is not uncommon to hear someone talking on Monday about what they did in Houston on Saturday. While people are more likely to practice where they went to school (and even more so where they went to residency), they are also more likely to practice near where they are from and have family. Houston proper, while not technically ET, definitely has strong ties with ET.

Very interesting, thanks for the info! When I said "not technically" from East Texas, I was referencing the map they provided us for answering the ties to ET question, which had Harris County/Houston as outside of "East Texas" but on the border of it. However, I can totally see your logic and am grateful for anything that can help me in the admissions process!
