2024-2025 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
People have invested a lot of time and money into applying, so it’s really hard to see others getting acceptances when you don’t have one. Many people don’t and won’t have a prematch to fall back on and that in and of itself is anxiety inducing. Now is a great time to practice empathy skills- you won’t be able to tell your patients to chill out and relax, or at least you probably shouldn’t take that approach with them. Try to see where others are coming from and ultimately be supportive. Getting into medical school and getting through medical school requires a village of support. Be part of that village for your friends and peers!

Im not going to get into an argument battle here, but there is no lack of empathy in my comment. Acting like the world is ending every time something happens will drive someone crazy. In this situation, the only real solution is to quite literally chill out.
I have worked with patients before, and let me tell you, sometimes the only answer to their situation is to chill out and let things play out. The money has already been invested; the hours have already been invested; you cannot get those back. The only way forward is to relax and rely on your support system; that's the truth, as hard as it might sound. No need to get on moral high ground.

No argument from my side of things. Im simply saying it’s reasonable for others to be upset or disappointed, try to be understanding of where they’re coming from. Medical school is extremely difficulty and trying, be kind to those around you who are facing hard times.

Does anyone know if those who interviewed early in the cycle will be reconsidered for the pre-match wave in January or if that will only be for those who interviewed later in the cycle?

For everyone feeling disappointed, worried, or discouraged: it’s not over yet. Many many many many many more applicants will find out what school they will be going to on February 14th (Match day) than those who will be getting a pre-match.

With that said, many pre-matched students will likely rank other schools on top of their pre-match school. Things will move and the algorithm god will have our backs.

For many of us, we are probably the only one in the family or social group that is going through this and we don’t have anyone to relate to about this— that’s also what leads us to Reddit or SDN. Heck, having to explain what a pre-match is to others is already hard enough lol. So with that said, I offer an anonymous warm virtual hug. We will be okay.

hey all, looking for some advice here. very grateful to have had 5 IIs (LM 76) but growing concerned with no prematches, especially with 2 of my schools being prematch heavy (UTSW and UTMB). really just want to get in anywhere, and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to send in LOIs or update letters (not sure which would be more applicable here) to continue to show my interest in my interviewed schools before the last few waves of prematches and eventually match day hits?

was really banking on a UTMB prematch as my interview was early and I felt that it went quite well. would sending an update letter or LOI help my chances at all of a prematch next wave? and which of those would be best to send in?
The Preview Day presenter made sure to let us know they do accept LOI and we should send them to highlight our interest. Do it!

Most of us (86%) will have 0 prematches and get the A on match day.

I wouldn’t try to game the system to get a prematch by sending a LOI unless it’s a school you really want to go to specifically. If you find yourself ranking UTMB above UTSW/Baylor, then go for it, otherwise I wouldn’t do it.

Prematches are extra reassuring, but going to the program you truly want the most will greatly outweigh a prematch

This is wise advice. Thank you for the insight. Can you explain how the 86% stat is calculated?

A couple of years back TMDSAS released statistics on pre-match offers and out of all of the matriculants of that cycle, only 1 in 7 had a single acceptance before match day. 6 out of 7 got their results on match day.

I would guess there might be more next week after the last interview date given that the first wave appears to be a lot smaller than last year’s.

Yes. They had not released a single admission until yesterday and they admit 200+ people before match day. We see at least 10-15% of those announcements on SDN.
Do you think us 11/20 folk will hear in December or are we banished until January?

For anyone that submitted a LOI, did you receive an email confirmation from the office? Thank you!

No, I didn’t. They also didn’t send any confirmation email after I sent a thank-you letter. They simply just added it to my portal.

No seriously though. God is the only reason I’ve even gotten this far
God, life, spirits, may be chance. We are privileged to be here. As I said in an earlier post, if you interviewed at UTMB, you are a great candidate and probably have more options in case UTMB doesn't work. We all worked hard to get here.

Also, I submitted a thank-you letter/letter of intent because this is truly my top choice, so we will see if that helps out any.

What's the general consensus about LOI's? I know someone mentioned earlier in the thread that UTMB welcomes them, but the sentiment I've seen among others on SDN(specifically some adcoms like Goro), is that they do little to nothing and in some cases can even hurt you.

Is it something you should only bother with if you can tie it with an update letter assuming you have something of merit to report?

+1 IS Pre-II R
Harvard II but UTMB pre II R is wild
