Does Boonshoft accept update letters? In MSAR, it says it does, but in the portal, I don't see anything. Is this only available to folks who have interviewed? Thanks!

i could only submit an update letter when I received my interview invite

Does Boonshoft send out pre-II rejections throughout the cycle? Or do they wait until the spring to do one mass rejection wave?

I'm still hoping to get the invite, but no movement and starting to get a bit worried.

If you look at cycletrack.org they wait until April to mass reject historically. They still sent II in December and a random one in March last year according to that website as well. I wouldn't say its over yet. Are you an Ohio resident? They have a substantial Ohio bias, 79% entrants from Ohio for class of 2027* according to their website. If you don't have state ties and aren't a resident I wouldn't feel super confident with an invite here unless its a super great fit, though there are definitely exceptions ofc 🙂 Best of luck!

*Edited because I mistyped before and put 2017

Thanks so much for this info! Yes, I’m in Ohio- 40 minute drive from the school 😂 w/ an interest in primary care and over a decade of working in community health 🙃 🤞🏼

That sounds like you're a great fit! Rooting for you!! I don't think it is over yet for you 🙂 Waiting sucks though!

I disagree with this here. Of course the data was from 7 years ago. But there are a good amount of out state students in each of the current 4 classes.

Hi, if you are a current student I am sure you likely know more, but the data was from the 2022-2023 cycle, I mistyped and meant 2027 (will edit now). Facts at a Glance | Boonshoft School of Medicine | Wright State University

There is also a spreadsheet here on SDN from 2021 (the most recent update on here, ( I dont know if this link will work) that the OOS acceptance rate for wright state was 1.2% ish for OOS vs 12.1% ish for in state. The number that actually matriculate ends up with not a crazy looking ratio of IS to OOS, but you have to look at the accepted # to get a true vibe.

Please don't take this as being rude! I am just a stat obsessive person... I just think its good to have realistic expectations for some schools of the odds of getting an interview there so its not as crushing if you don't 🙂

I’m OOS and recently got accepted to BSOM! I met with a current med student at BSOM who informed me that the new Dean/President/Idk the specific title, but anyways, that person is a lot more open to OOS students than in previous years, so I think the numbers you’re looking at might be a little outdated and I think OOS acceptance % is now higher!

That's really great to hear!

Hey no not rude at all. Thanks for the clarification. I am a current OOS with no ties and who was interviewed and accepted early in my cycle (before Thanksgiving). I would be careful using SDN stats.

Especially, how do they determine the acceptance percentage based on IS or OOS? To my knowledge there is no real data to really determine but only guesstimates based on matriculation numbers. However, like you said matriculation changes as well so even those who were accepted and are OOS has a chance to decline.

While the schools website info appears to be updated for the C/O 2027 I would suggest using AAMCs MSAR report as the school has to report back exactly who they accepted/matriculated to AAMC and they generate this report. It will help to really get a pulse on what interviews look like and the matriculation data.

I have included some numbers here directly in regard to the 2027 class. 2028 numbers should be published in the spring.

So they interviewed 416 students total
275 IS (66%)
141 OOS (33.8%)
*clearly they interviewed more IS students but that is a big number for OOS students.

Matriculation Data is on point with what you shared.
101 IS (~79%)
25 OOS (~21%)
**again it doesn’t seem like a lot but that is a good amount of OOS students compared to like FSU in Florida where they only matriculate ~1-2 OOS students. And I am almost willing to bet that the reason the OOS wasn’t more in this class is because they decided to go somewhere else.

I know this thread is long. I just wanted to share this info so OOS students with no ties aren’t discouraged. If the school is a great fit for your medical education desires definitely apply as the admissions committee is looking for students who aligns with their mission. So interviewing here is not unlikely at all and I’m not saying this as a cliche.

Lastly, I just want to point out that it is hard/competitive to get into medical school anywhere and even at Boonshoft where there are over 6500 students who applied and only 400+ interviews for 130 seat class. It’s not easy. However, just keep trying and you’ll be a doctor!

Best of luck everyone!!

No worries 🙂 I just wanted to encourage people for the opposite reason haha. It is crushing to feel like you have a high chance and then you don't get an invite. I am NOT saying it isn't possible and I really am rooting for everyone and kudos for you for taking the optimistic route haha.

I didn't renew my MSAR so I didn't have the stats so thanks for adding them! Like you said, over 6500 students apply and the majority of those are OOS. So 141 interview invites out of the larger number OOS vs 275 out of the much smaller number in state is a very different percentage. I think the % accepted post-interview is quite high for both though!

Your last paragraph hit the nail on the head, it is extremely competitive everywhere including here. Unfortunately luck plays a bigger role than we would like to admit as well and I think we need to remember that so we don't take it crazy personally 🙂 I just know the feeling of thinking you have a pretty high chance with the fit, stats, etc and then being crushed. It is rough out here and best of luck to everyone!!

Also, just to clarify, I am NOT at all saying there is no chance for OOS (I am OOS now unfortunately but born and raised in OH and no interview here--Another reason to take OOS with a grain of salt since some OOS have extremely strong ties but you can't tell from raw numbers). There is still PLENTY of time to get an interview. I just also find it reassuring to know that if we don't get interviews, that doesn't necessarily mean we were a poor applicant, sometimes the odds and luck can just be sucky.

Hi @Joedirty I had a couple quick questions about the curriculum/grading system if you don't mind-- I know BSOM does P/F preclinical grading, but do you have internal rankings as well? Admit.org says yes but I couldn't find anything about it on the website. Also, how is the H/P/F system for clerkships? How difficult is it to honor vs. pass a clerkship?

Hey no problem at all. So there’s no class rank for preclinical or clinical years. You mention the honor designation which is what we have.

Honors across foundations (preclinical years) is given based on your NBME averages which are exams we take at the end of every class and are retired step questions. You have to pass on first attempt. The school also adds up your final OSCE (clinical skills) scores as well as one of your two CBSE exams (prestep exams) and if you’re in the top 25% average’s of your class you get the honors designation.

For Honors across doctoring it’s based on your clerkship director’s assessment and feedback.

Hope this helps feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.

For anyone who has selected an interview date/time, can you see your confirmed date/time in your portal? I no longer see my scheduled date/time in my portal and have also not received any confirmation email. Do you receive a confirmation email with your confirmed date/time?

The same thing happened to me and I panicked lol but I got the confirmation like 2 days later via e-mail!

Does anyone know where we can send thank you letters to? Upload to the portal that opened after II as a pdf?

When I interviewed, they told us to send them directly to the admissions email that sends all the communications to you. I sent them to that email and got an email response that they were forwarded to my interviewers!

Hopefully today 🤞I can’t wait any longer
Guess I was wrong lol
It’s been like over 4 weeks for me
But I remember them saying as early as 2 weeks, around 4 weeks usually, but 6 weeks max ish?

I do wonder when they go on break and if we can here anything right before Christmas

I’m in the same boat. I messaged someone here and they got their acceptance at exactly three weeks in October. I’m assuming everything is delayed for us because of Thanksgiving and the holidays since we haven’t heard anything yet.

Has anyone with an interview from before mid-November heard anything yet?

This question is for people who are accepted: Have you received the Certifi background check? I haven’t received it yet and I’m unsure if I should contact someone or if it’s normal.
