2025-2026 UTSW

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For Prompt 4, I am in a gap year about to start one of the mentioned public service activities. It is listed in my TMDSAS planned activities and I am actively preparing materials for it. Would I not answer this prompt at all since I haven't started teaching yet?

they may not even read your activities. 🙂

It is an important question for UTSW evaluation. they add points to the app based on the question.
Any question a school makes a point of asking you should be answered if you fit the requirement.

Absolutely mention it, list your starting date and what you expect to be doing. Obviously you can't comment on the experience yet, but you should answer this question.

Does anybody know how heavily Casper is weighted? My stats are decent, 520 and 3.99, but somehow got 1st quartile in Casper and am curious if it's a massive part of the applicationthey are they not even really using it yet, just collecting data? Anybody get in that had a low low score?

Several people on SDN have confirmed getting into UTSW with a 1st quartile Casper score. You can look up. Here is one example:

I believe that if you have a low score, it only comes up in conjunction with other red flags in an app as a means to reject an applicant. Otherwise, they don't care

Does UTSW go back and review apps, like if I submitted earlier than someone who has already gotten an II?
Yeah, they review and re-review throughout the cycle. I submitted first day and didn't get an interview invite till early September.

For prompt 2, I'm planning on writing about a problematic workplace dynamic I witnessed between my boss and a coworker. However, I'm a bit worried that it will sound like I'm bad-mouthing my boss.

Sorry this is kinda long but...

The coworker was a former Ophthalmologist from China who was working as a tech. She always showed up to work on time and stayed focused, but she often had challenges understanding instructions due to a language barrier. My boss often spoke very quickly and never slowed down for her; she'd also cut off my coworker constantly and treat her like a child. It seemed like my boss never really understood that all she needed to do was exercise a little patience. I never confronted my boss directly (I explain in the essay that I worried I'd be threatening my good standing and jeopardize future employment with her); however, I took time to get to know my coworker, hear her story of immigrating to the US, trade recipes (because we both love to cook), and help her out when she was struggling.

Does anyone have any advice on the angle I'm taking here? Since the prompt is about witnessing discrimination/harassment, is it a problem if the harasser is someone I used to work for?

Your advice might be different from others, but for me I did the same thing about a patient I had. To me, that isn't bad-mouthing. HOWEVER, I would suggest thinking of a stronger way to round it out. For me, I didn't speak up either. I talked about how I realized that I should have spoke up or told someone higher than those who caused the issue. Does that make sense?

Ya, thank you! I think I can talk about how I could have asked one of my more senior coworkers for advice on the situation. I could also mention how I could have reached out to an HR rep, but maybe that is worse than simply confronting the boss privately and directly.

Definitely! Don't want to make it like you're a snitch. Tailor it more towards trying to be sure everyone's side feels heard. Like taking a Casper or Preview exam lol.

Can any current medical students or accepted students share their resume stats/details for comparison? (i.e. MCAT, GPA, clinical experience, shadowing, volunteering, research, etc). Would be great insight!! 😊

The best way to see this is to look at last year’s UTSW thread in the February & March posts to see who got in.

is anyone else who received an interview invite not able to see their scheduled date in the confirmation email or the admissions website after scheduling the interview?

Wait I submitted but after I had the question. For a year long activity in prompt 4 I interpreted it like full time stuff like TFA or Military. But I did volunteer with the Crisis Text Line for 3 years now and the Center for Service in Action (a community service organization which I helped lead as a youth leader) 3 years through college. Should I have talked about those?

Most applicants don't answer that question, and it is meant as you interpreted it initially, a full-time commitment like Peace Corps, City Year, TFA, etc.
I'm sure you mentioned those other activities in your primary application

Thank you, that got me panicked suddenly for some reason. Also I don't know if you recognized my username, but I did get verified and the secondaries flooded in. Thankfully prewrote a lot of them so I am able to return them quickly. Thanks for your support and help.

I had same stats and was complete a week earlier than you and didn’t get my II until October. It can take a while sometimes :’)
it's still July! don't worry till Thanksgiving 🙂
It would be nice if I could get interview done before my fall semester starts up. Wonder if that means my application doesn't fit with the school as much as those who got those II already...

There’s no way to tell tbh, it’s a long cycle don’t let it consume your mind or it’s just gonna mess with you a lot. People get early interviews and don’t get in, and people get late interviews (like as late as November and December) and get in so just try to zoom out a little (trust me I know it’s hard…) and we’ll be fine
