CCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how quickly CCOM will turn around a response after interviews? The reason I ask (aside from trying to spare my sanity!) is that I'm trying to navigate the balance act of acceptances and deposit requirements for turn around times... Thanks a bunch!!!

Depends on where you fall in the cycle. They meet monthly (most likely towards the end of the month). My interview occured right after they met so I had to wait 4 weeks.

Ugh!! I interview the 28th... maybe they'll meet the 30th!!! 🙂 hahahaha.. I can hope, right??!?!

Could someone help me with what a CV should look like or be set up like. I dont know how much detail to put into each individual thing I did. For example:

EDUCATION

Michigan State University; East Lansing, Michigan
Bachelor of Science in Physiology 2008

Baker College; Owosso, Michigan
Certified Nurses Aide Certification

Thats what I have in there but I dont know if there should be more information along with them? If someone would help this lost soul out haha it would be much appreciated. A PM of yours as a template would be awesome 🙂

if you have a career center at your school, they can help you make a dynamite CV. other than that you can google examples as someone else said.

That would be so nice...then we would know in less than two weeks! I wish i could have gotten my interview earlier, but i have so many exams the two weeks before it really would not have been good....

So I interview on Oct. 2nd and I was wondering if there was anyone that goes to CCOM that can host me on the 1st. I'll be renting a car since I have to drive up to Ros. Frank. for another interview on Monday, but a host for an evening or two would be great. Please PM me if you can.

has anyone that has been complete after 8/26 receive an invite yet?

We are in the same boat droog. Was really hoping for an invite from CCOM. No news is better than bad news though.

I guess. I am going to wait a couple weeks until I contact them again ( I bug them a lot) but from looking at last year's threads the people who were complete very early and didnt get invites within the first ones being sent out ended up getting rejected.

Personally, I am not HUGELY upset as I had a feeling it was a long shot for me.

You were completed the 10th? I was completed the 20th. I don't think there is a need to worry until a couple months have passed, but that is just my opinion.

Why do you think its a long shot for you? you have great numbers and tons of extracurricular and volunteering!

Take a look at CCOM's averages. I don't have great numbers for them.
Right now, I am happy I have an acceptance from LECOM and still have other interviews I am going to attend. Honestly, I havent given CCOM much thought until today.

Thanks for the encouragement though....

plus MSU is a total ripoff for OOSers. 65k/year just for tuition? are you kidding me? you can't get michigan residency after one year, either. it takes 3 years! **** that!

also, don't be fooled by MSU's #7 primary care ranking. it means nothing. that ranking is mainly based on the % of med students from that school going into primary care. that's it. you can go into primary care from any school. I would DEFINITELY go to CCOM over MSU.

I agree about the tuition and the basis for the ranking. But, being ranked number 7 in primary care doesnt mean that they put you on a choke hold and force you to choose primary care, check out their match for this year:

http://www.com.msu.edu/admissions/CL09Rev.List.TXT

It is my humble opinion, that where you will end up on the match will solely depend on how motivated you are, and much effort you put into medical school, regardless of which school you go to. unless you attend The University of Somalia or some similar school. (No offense to anyone)

where are the interview invites?! 🙁

To those of you who have received interview invitations: could you plz post the dates when you completed, too?

Man, why is CCOM so erratic with the interview invites??

I was complete on July 23rd and have not received anything... anyone else in the same boat as me?

interview invite! 9/13

i was complete 8/27, and got an interview at AZCOM like the next day, so I had kind of given up hope for CCOM.

Can someone provide feedback on the rotations with CCOM... names don't matter to me (and I can find them online)... I'm looking at the possibility of staying in one place, not moving twenty million times... etc, etc... How is it really affordable without going for a quarter million in debt (I don't come from a high end family) ... Can someone PM me with some real, first hand information that is not "admissions" in nature? Thanks!

Just got into Downers Grove today. Yay, during rush hour. Anyways I hope everyone is doing good on this thread. This will be my second interview for DO schools and I am excited for my interview tomorrow. Anyways if you guys have questions regarding the interview ill log back on later and let you know. Oh and by the way, if you are scheduling an interview here I am staying at the Red Roof Inn(49.99) and it is no more than a mile away from Midwestern. Anyways good luck to all.

Are you flying into O'Hare or Midway? Either way, traffic starts to get bad around that time. The cab driver will most likely take I-294 if you're coming from O'Hare and it's been under construction... I don't remember what time interviews start but if it's around 9 then I think you should be fine. If it's around 8 then it's cutting it a little close.

Most people move into the Downers Grove area (DG or surrounding suburbs) for their first 2 years. From what 3rd and 4th years tell me, about half the class moves into the city between their 2nd and 3rd year. A lot of the rotation sites are in the city but there's also a lot out in the suburbs and they're all pretty spread out so you're going to have to commute one way or another. You would do fine living in the same place all 4 years.

You are cutting it really close trying to get there in time. While you are trying to go the opposite direction of traffic, the traffic around midwestern will get BAD this time in the morning. If you could, i would try and move your flight time so it gives you a little more time (I would give yourself a good two hours at least!)

Good Luck!

the interview starts at 8 30.

i might not even be able to go =(. i'm feeling sick these days. i don't know if it will be a good idea to fly. i'll see monday how i feel.

I'm curious, does anyone know what Downer's Grove is like? Does it feel far enough out from Chicago so that it's a little nicer? (less traffic, free parking, cleaner) I'm wondering because I added them to my list today, but I don't really like living in huge cities. I'm hoping that since it's in the suburbs, it will be better. I realize that I would have to go into Chicago itself for rotations and everything.

I was told from someone that lives right around the area that it is NOT chicago (in the big city sense) and that it is a large distance away from the city. Idk about rotations tho I am assuming a lot of them are done in the city.

Thanks! 👍 that's really good to know

Yeah, I would say it would take about 30 min. into the city on a good day, due to traffic and not so much distance. In other words, it would be VERY difficult to live in the city and commute to school. Traffic is so bad. Rotations are pretty spread out, the city and suburbs. Even though some would require a good drive, I think one could get away with staying in the same place for 4 years. It depends on your preference. I know many students move in to the city for 3rd-4th years, but not all the rotations are in the city. One of the rotation spots in Olympia Fields, IL is a pretty good distance away though.

But the area is very built up, and anything you need is in close proximity. Lots of malls, stores, restaurants, bars, etc etc.... Also, plenty of housing at decent prices.

@ doxy, yeah... i visited there for an interview. and the campus is NOT IN CHICAGO AT ALL. i took a cab from midway airport to the school and the cab driver rung up almost 25 miles... i repeat.. its pretty deep in the suburbs. NOT urban at all... which can be good for some and not so good for others.

Complete: 7/31
Invite: 8/24
Interview: 9/22

Looking forward to meeting my fellow interviewees on Tuesday!

I received the complete email on 9/8 and interview invitation on 9/17

How'd the interview go? How is the campus/atmosphere? Library hours? Curriculum highlights? Haha any info would be cool, I know I can look it up but you get a different perspective once you visit the campus. I am interviewing at ccom soon so anything helps Thanks!

i have to admit, i felt pretty out of place. im a big city boy and the atmosphere and the people were just too different. (i met people that came from farms/ or had their own farms, never experienced that). The school seems pretty secluded in nature. LOTS of trees everywhere you see. alot of people say its a small campus but to me, since i did my undergrad in the city, it was pretty big. alot of walking. people were very nice. tuition a bit crazy though.... dunno if i can imagine myself taking out 75g's a year. if you grew up or are used to the whole suburbanish area, im pretty sure you'd fit right in

Not sure how I feel about suburbs yet, having never lived in one, but everything you said about people coming from the country, the school being secluded and surrounded by trees and nature, maybe I will like this school after all!! 🙂

Meh... I cant attend any of the interview dates they have listed on the applicant portal. Lame... Was anyone else in this boat? It says they will let you know when dates become available. Will they just show up in the portal itself?

Oh and for the inquiring minds: I was complete 8/27 and my invite came 9/17

Yeah, just keep checking the interview scheduling system for dates, they post new ones pretty often. That's how it worked for AZCOM, I would assume the same for CCOM.

I'm wondering for the out-of-state people that have already gone to their interviews, where did you stay, how was the service, and how much did you pay for your hotel room? I got my first invite to CCOM on Oct 20th and I'm trying to plan out the process. If anyone can give me some advice that would be great!

Hey! Your the Johns-Hopkins guy, right? How did you like CCOM?

Yep, that's me. I really liked the school and the students, as well as the high quality of rotations that are available. The cost of living at the school? Not so much.

I also decided to go along with the guy who gave a tour of his dorm room. To be quite honest, the place looked like a cave. Horrible lighting and very old-fashioned (no A/C or heat!). I guess off-campus housing is kind of the only way to go.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn in Lombard, IL. The total cost was ~$75. The service was great, nice room and breakfast was included. Not a bad deal at all.

i can comment being there that DG is NOTHING like chicago. it is suburban in nature. there is plenty around campus to go to for lunch if you are not an on-campus lunch person. easy access to both I-88 and I-355 which makes it pretty easy to get about anywhere. also in downtown DG is a train station and it is about a 30 min train ride to chicago loop. also easy access to the elevated trains (the el's) to get anywhere as well.
as far as traffic it is a giev and take....yes it is less crowded but you can still and do still run into backups/traffic jams at certain times. the difference is that they will not last as long and are generally faster moving than what you woudl see downtown.
any more questions...feel free to ask as i am a life long illinoisian 🙂

I sent in my secondary about a week ago and haven't heard any thing yet, which isn't surprising, but it sounds like a lot of you have been waiting a month or more. Is that the standard for CCOM? Also, what are the avg. GPA/MCATs for accepted students?
