I've got my housing situation covered (except furniture). Moving down to Miss. in less than two weeks! I've filled out an application to adopt a dog, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll find out if I get it within the next day or two. 🙂
 
I'm glad I got my housing situation squared away pretty quickly after receiving my acceptance. I'd still have plenty of time to do it even if I was just starting now, but it's much less stressful having it already taken care of.

I keep getting all worked up about the stupidest things. Like I'll be dozing off at night and suddenly think "OMG, I haven't bought my textbooks yet! I need to do that first thing tomorrow!" And then I realize that it's June, I have more than two months before school starts and I don't even know what I'll need yet. Same thing goes for visa paperwork, random school supplies, even groceries for when I get to my apartment . . . I have to keep reminding myself that it's waaaaayyy too early to start worrying about all that stuff.

Right now I'm working on setting up a blog. Vet student blogs were so helpful (and interesting!) when I was applying that I thought I'd pay it forward and start my own. Only problem is I can't come up with a decent name. I have a list of possibilities, but nothing jumping out at me. I'm definitely overthinking this. :laugh:

I had a second of "people at my school can pick me out as the one from Louisiana!" 'cause that's how it's been throughout undergrad. Then I remembered I'm going to school in Louisiana. More than half the class will be from Louisiana. What.

winter in the Midwest isn't always too bad haha! they are highly variable. two winters ago we didn't get much snow and it was warm for winter (like upper 30s and low 40s) and this past year there was a blizzard the day I got home from spring break (which was in late March), and we got a snow day! 😀 so we had an extended spring break!

when I went for my Minnesota interview in Late January it was sunny and -4 degrees (without windchill)! but at least Ohio isn't that far north.

Both times we've visited Ithaca (January and March) it has been snowing for the entire day. I'm embracing it! I love the winter. 🙂 Give me a cup of hot tea, warm slippers, and a cozy blanket + cat on my lap and I'm a happy lady. What I don't love is a super humid, sticky, smelly, HOT summer in NYC. Nothing like the smell of rotting garbage to wake you up on your walk to the subway in the morning. And I'll be glad when the days of $350 electric bills just to run my window air conditioner are behind me.

I don't love driving in the snow but we're getting a car with AWD to be on the safe side. I used to drive a Jeep which was awesome in inclement weather, and not so awesome every time I had to fill up the gas tank. :laugh:

Oh wow... If 30 is warm, I am in BIG trouble hahah A cold winter in the south is about 75 degrees!! I have a collection of warm coats and boats already started!!

Thank you for the encouragement 🙂 I plan to survive on hot apple cider and Uggs 🙂

EDIT: I never thought about learning how to drive in the snow!!

I never understood complaining about the cold weather... it's going to snow whether your moan about it or not. Might as well bundle up, make hot cocoa and try to enjoy it 🙂 And having a fuzzy friend to snuggle with makes it so much better. (I fully realize I just complained about the heat... but there's only so much clothing I can take off!)

My biggest tip for driving in the snow - give yourself a lot of room around other drivers. I've found that most people turn into asshats when there is snow on the ground.

I agree with this. Make sure that you give yourself space no matter what kind of car you are driving, the roads can get slick. During my Minnesota interview there as a blizzard that came while we were driving up there and we witnessed several fender bender accidents on the highway that happened right in front of us because people were driving too close or too fast.

During that spring break blizzard, it was a nightmare for many people because it was on the last sunday of spring break and 40,000 students trying to get back to the same campus for class at the same time clogging the highways during the blizzard (which dropped about 2 feet of snow and had strong winds). some of my friends driving in it were stuck driving for 6 hours in what's normally a 2 hour drive, and hundreds of cars ended up in the ditch with others that got stuck on the road cuz they got snowed in. The university only decided to cancel class at 1 AM on sunday night right before class (they could have told us that BEFORE we all tried to drive down!)

The key to learning how to drive in snow is learning how your car behaves. First good snowstorm you get, go find a big empty parking lot and practice driving around in it. Speed up, then slam on your breaks. Crank the wheel around as hard as you can. Do everything in your power put that car into a slide, then practice pulling it back out again. My dad used to take me out to do this stuff any time I started driving a new vehicle, and it makes a huge difference. I'm so much more confident driving in bad weather. Only twice have I ever ended up in a bad slide in a snowstorm, and both times I was able to get out of it pretty quickly without hitting anything because I already knew exactly what to do. Practice makes all the difference.

Now I drive a big pickup truck with four wheel drive, so I don't have to worry much unless the weather starts to get really crazy. But I've still done all of the above in both four and two wheel drive in my truck multiple times. It's good practice, and I'll admit . . . it's super fun. :laugh:

This. At the start of every winter, I find an empty parking lot to play around in for a while. It really helps.

My additional piece of advice is to try your best never to be in a hurry. That way, you have the ability to drive at a speed that is comfortable and your attention won't drift to calculating how late you'll be.

This is amazing advice and I don't know why I haven't thought to do it before. Will definitely be trying this in the new car! 👍

I signed up last week, it's so exciting! I've been on VSPN for years, but being a member of VIN makes going to vet school that much more real. Plus there's some awesome resources for students, and a Plumbs right at your fingertips! 🙂
 
I did some back to school clothes shopping today. Was fun and only hurt a little bit.
 
I'll probably have to go do more clothes shopping too. I had minimal winter clothes since Texas has minimal (no?) winter. Memorial day sales did me right (clearance rack prices + 40% off = Banana Republic sweaters for super cheap) but I could still use more.

Meh, and eventually I'll need to buy tires that won't send me to my death if it snows.

This!! Today I spent about five minutes thinking about how I am going to store my milk-in-a-bag in Canada!

Then the other day someone at work asked me if I was excited. I looked up and asked "For what?" And she gave me this funny look and was like uhhh, to move, start vet school, you know that whole thing? Oh. Yeah. 😀

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought about starting a blog. I just don't think I can devote the time to it that I would need to. So many of those blogs start out with a bunch of posts and then you don't see anything for like 2 months.

LOL, my boyfriend's family lived in Canada for two years when he was in high school. Shortly after I was accepted he informed me that I would be moving to a province where milk comes in bags and I was like "HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK?!" Apparently they sell special milk pitchers. Why not just put it in a jug like the rest of the world? :shrug:

I just realized that I move to Canada in exactly 2 months. Holy crap.
 
Never seen milk in a bag in my entire life......:shrug:

So.....it's an Easterners thing, I guess?

I've seen the special pitchers for milk in a bag. Maybe I'm being a bit OCD but I want my dairy in something that can be sealed, and preferably not leaching chemicals into it 😛 I also heard cereal comes packaged differently too? Any Canadians to weigh in?

Ummm....if it's anything like milk in a bag my opinion won't matter much, but I will say no, it's not different than the U.S.

I'm interested to see what some maritimers say. I think it's interesting how different stuff is. 🙂
 
The fiancé and I just moved our stuff into our apartment today!! Made it feel like all this is really happening haha. Now to get married in 2 weeks...still so much to do! 😱

I'm living slightly off campus at Sterling Place. I wanted to be close enough to have access to the school, but far enough that I didn't have to deal with undergrad shenanigans 🙄 Are you getting excited to move in??

And Abney I hope you did find a place!

Realized today when planning the rest of the summer at the zoo that there's only 6 more weeks until I move. Kind of crazy.... Maybe I'm starting to freak out a little 😀

Registered for classes today! I think it's finally hitting home, especially since my status is "Professional student"
 
Thankfully my panic yesterday turned into productivity today. I went through these giant bins under my bed. Vacuumed and scrubbed my floor and paced some stuff up.
 
Just put an offer down on a place. 😀 It's moments like this that feel so surreal....
 
This summer is dragging on. I'm not working, and I'm just so ready to move to Auburn.
 
I got a table for my apartment today. It's a little short which is perfect because one of my cats has tiny legs. I figure she's going to get on the table anyways at least this way she can jump straight on it. It made my day.
