I'm allergic to dogs, cats, cows, horses, and rabbits. I did shots and take pills. I deal with it. I know the irony of it and can't help but make fun of myself.
 
So I have all these negative emotions, is it even right that I am in Vet school?
Come on! I wanted this. I didn't want to make 10 dollars per hour for the rest of my life as a veterinary assistant and be a slave to demanding and unappreciative doctors.
But I am so not ready for all this 🙁
I don't feel so EXCITED as some people do. I am SCARED!

Here's what I think about vet school: likelihood is that you're probably not going to like it. You may hate it most of the time. You may be one of the lucky ones that enjoys, but I wouldn't go in expecting to. Pretty sure vet school is like getting punched in the face repeatedly for 4 years. But it is what it is. We have to get through it to do what we want to do in the end.

Almost done with the first week of class and it kind of blows. I think once I get into a routine it will suck a little less, but I'm not sure it's going to get a whole lot better.

I felt like that for a long time, and I just started to feel better about it. One thing that helped me was the financial future talk. He pulled up a debt calculator at a normal debt load (15%) and the average starting salary for last year's new grads, and it was not too far from my own debt load. A lot of what was eating me was the "why am I doing this to myself? It's not worth it" feeling. The second major thing was coating ceremony--dressed up all doctorly and putting on my (blue) coat, I actually felt positive about going into this.

I guess I'm one of of those lucky ones. I'm terrified that I'll fail, terrified that I won't be good enough, and terrified that I won't manage but I'm loving everything I'm doing so far. Some of the stuff is kind of dumb and annoying, but once I get it out of the way I can focus on the really cool stuff. I think you have to find what motivates you and try to enjoy it instead of just hoping that something will be interesting enough to hold your interest. School takes all the fun out of learning anyway.
 
Just finished orientation today. I am excited to start but at the same time I have all this doubt in my mind. Orientation was very fun but I'm having trouble finding a niche. Granted it's only been 3 days, but I feel like a lot of people have found a "group" to hang out with already. Anyone else feel that way..? I tend to be a little more soft-spoken until I get to know people (then it's crazy me all the way) and am making an effort but just haven't clicked. Kind of scared to form the anatomy group too.

We had so much talk about imposter syndrome and I definitely am suffering from it. Don't know when it will go away but hopefully I pull out of this funk soon!

It's such a big step to get into vet school that once you're there you can forget the whole point. As much of an accomplishment as it is, just remember that our goal in all of this isn't to be veterinary students, it's to be veterinarians. This is all temporary.

That is how I felt. As long as you are open to the extroverts they will come. Just about to finish the first real week of classes and I'm not really in a niche, but there is always an open seat at a table I can sit at if I feel the need to be social. Definitely have the imposter syndrome and after the first quiz I feel like I should quit now, but just hoping it will get better.

Speaking of extroverts and niches, did you go to the club rush? I had to run out to make sure no one stole my car cause the idiots from my insurance told the guy coming to unlock my car to be there at 3:30 instead of 4:00. I am just glad he didn't leave it locked refusing to help me out if I wasn't there.

Anywho, I just went and did errands then went home. I didn't feel like dealing with all the people and clubs. :d
 
Yeah, I just ran in, put my name and email on the clubs I was interested in, and left. They said they will have class announcements or emails for times of meetings and we didn't have to pay dues or anything today. Speaking of locking stuff up, I locked my keys in my locker so I had to get it cut off after anatomy. And I was the 2nd first year that did that today... Apparently that quiz made us all stupified...
 
Hope your next quizzes go better, HorsesRLife. You belong there! Don't let it get you down! (I'm sure this will become my mantra once I get started with classes)

Someone in my class said the same thing! And they want to go into small animal med...like what? I don't get it. Kudos for putting up with allergies.

Im highly allergic to horses, cats, dogs and anything with fur or hair really. Im also highly allergic to their saliva. Ive developed immunity to horses and am starting to with cats, however dogs still get me. Allwrgy medicine has always been my friend.

I'm glad you are able to develop an immunity over time! But that must be a rough process getting there. I admire that commitment. Yay for allergy meds though 🙂
 
Week one down!

It took me so long to get here I really can't believe this is real. I feel like I'm exactly where I need to be. I was so nervous about starting but I literally get tears eyed everytime I walk through the front door of the school. I'm like floating on air. I know it will get harder and ill have some difficult times but right now I'm so happy.

I am allergic to cats, dogs, and horses. And recently I also discovered a latex allergy. My body doesn't want me to be a vet. :/

I'm dreading rotations with equine in the future since my allergy meds didn't work around them (it's been years since I last spent more than a few minutes around a horse), but I'm hoping that Immunotherapy will get rid of my allergies to them before then. My new allergy clinic just messed up my dosage, so I may have to start all over again before my allergies get any better (I've been on allergy shots for 2.5 years now, and all allergies except to cats have gotten slightly better).

Even though I have allergies, I own a dog, and I've worked with cats/dogs for many years. I also had cats and dogs growing up. One of my friends is really allergic to cats. He's in vet school, is known as the crazy cat guy, and he has 7+ cats (he's also an SDN member, but not really active anymore). I know several classmates with allergies to the above-mentioned animals or lab animals and several vets with allergies that still were successful.

Allergies are just a small challenge some people have to overcome. Very few times have I had to take a break from cat/dog handling because of allergies in a clinical setting. I just have to wash my hands more frequently than most. I'm hoping to go into research/teaching, so I most likely won't be fighting allergies in my career. For those with severe allergies, they can choose to work with an animal they are not allergic to once they graduate.

On a different topic...while you all are having your first quizzes, I'm having my first final Monday! This will be test #9. I'm enjoying vet school, but it is a lot of work.

Had our first day of orientation yesterday and our Blue Coat Ceremony last night. It still doesn't feel real to me. I think my family was getting really irritated by my indifference and lack of enthusiasm at the ceremony last night. Apparently I should be more excited. Mostly I was tired and sick of having pictures taken of me.

Not really sure how I feel about starting classes in two days. Just have to ride it out and see how it goes I guess.

The day I moved to Gainesville, I cried happy tears when I passed the vet school sign. This year I cried tears of dread 🙄 But I definitely remember that feeling and it was awesome. Hold onto that and remind yourself when vet school tries to knock you down! 🙂
 
Study, study, study, study, sleep, repeat... First week feels like UG finals week. I am refusing to fall behind... Until we hit that point where it is inevitable to fall behind!

EDIT: Just realized this is the first time I have been on SDN since we started... So I can officially change my status to veterinary student!

Same sentiments exactly... just spent over 3 hours in the anatomy lab this morning going over bones, transverse, and sagittal sections of the thoracic limb.
 
See, I like the studying, I just don't like the classes all day thing. Studying now and enjoying myself. Though anatomy lab is pretty sweet other than what I smell like afterwards.

We have our first labs for both anatomy and cell bio/histology on Monday.
 
Anatomy lab is the greatest thing ever we have a great dog! He is older and his muscles are really well developed and he is lean so no excess fat.
 
This might seem like a silly question, but just out of curiosity, what classes do you guys have right now? With our PBL-based curriculum, it's kind of just one big course called "The Animal Body." We also have an animal handling + physical exam course in conjunction which starts next week with camelids 😀

We have cell bio, micro anatomy (histo), gross anatomy, and physiology.

According to the class schedule I have: Macroscopic Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Intro to Vet Med, Physiology, Structure and Function, Animal Production Systems, Animal Behavior and Welfare, and Immunology.

Yup, definitely going to be a fun semester. :scared:

We have Physiological Chemistry, Physiology, Clinical Skills I (w/ lab), Gross Anatomy I (w/ lab), Developmental Anatomy, Histology (w/ lab), Human-Animal Relationships, PBL group sessions, Molecular Biology, and International Vet Med.

Some of them bleed into the spring semester. Physiology doesn't start until after Physiological Chemistry, for example, so we only have our first exam in that right before winter break.

There's also a mini-internship requirement called Adopt A Vet Student where we spend at least a weekend's worth of work at a farm or somewhere we haven't likely seen before so we can see the farmer's (or some other other industry's) perspective before we go barging in later to work with the animals. 👍

ETA: Oops! Forgot Radioanatomy and Principles of Medical Imaging. That's also one in 1st semester, though I'm pretty sure that one bleeds into spring.

Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging is the 3rd year course, taught spring semester. 🙂

We have it three times at AVC. There's some radiographic anatomy built into the first year anatomy course. Then we have Principles of Diagnostic Imaging in second year, which covers some technical aspects of radiology, ultrasound, MRI, CT and nuclear scintigraphy. Then we have Diagnotic Radiology in third year which (as far as I can tell) covers radiographic findings for different diseases.

This sounds somewhat similar to OKState. We have to find bone features and summations during first year anatomy and regular diagnostic imaging diagnosing will be later.
 
Oh, that makes sense. Very nice to spread it out. It's all condensed into one course for us, which is brutal from what I understand.
 
The focus of the 1st year course at OSU is on normal radiographic findings (with some disease thrown in for funsies). The 3rd year course is disease-based.

I'm in a PBL based curriculum too. We have one big class called Veterinary Basic Sciences which is basically twelve classes in one (the twelve "ologies") and then we also have vet issues, MCB, and clinical skills. We have three rotations our first year, per block, and those are tied into clinical skills. We also have anatomy lab twice a week (but the lab is actually open basically 24/7) and BSLs or basic skills labs where we have a lecturer come in on different topics. We had a physiology lecture on calcium homeostasis and a basic rads lecture so far.

Gross anatomy, microanatomy, physiology, veterinary career development, cross course integration, 3D imaging anatomy of the dog, history of vet med, use and interpretation of vet scientific literature
