Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This might seem like a silly question, but just out of curiosity, what classes do you guys have right now? With our PBL-based curriculum, it's kind of just one big course called "The Animal Body." We also have an animal handling course in conjunction which starts next week with camelids 😀
We have Immunology, Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, and Professional Development. Our Histology final is tomorrow, and our Immunology final is in like three weeks. Then, we begin Neurology and Infectious Agents. Our Anatomy gives us an introduction to reading radiographs, and we have to identify stuff on radiographs for our tests.

It's really interesting to hear about how courses differ from school to school.

We've got Bacteriology, Immunology, Microscopic Anatomy (Histo), Anatomy, Physiology, Physical Diagnosis, Clinical Correlations and Ethics, and a week of Application Based Learning Exercise (Jam explained better than I can 🙂). Whew, writing it all down is slightly intimidating... I need to go study now....

You will be fine! 🙂

The ABLE, application based learning exercise, is a PBL week long case study. All other classes are suspended for the week.

Late-comer to the first-week-done party, but I'm here! I've kept off SDN my orientation and first weeks because I didn't want to be distracted, but now I'm reading textbooks and want to be distracted. We've had anatomy and physio quizzes and I did well on them, but I think the physio one especially was meant to be super-easy to ease us into it. Parasitology quiz on Tuesday!

I'm all caught up with reviewing my notes and am trying to catch up with the texts.

Does anyone else wish that Labor Day was a little later in the semester? I mean, there are plenty of times in undergrad when I felt that a day off would have a much better use in the middle of midterm season. But we get a Fri/Mon off in October for Fall Break, so I shouldn't complain too much.

I agree! I'm flying home (California to Florida) the weekend after that so of course I wish it was pushed to that weekend but there's also just the fact that Labour Day is so close to when we actually started. I would rather have it when I need a break! We only get the Thursday/Friday off for Thanksgiving too 🙁

I get my first rabies vaccine on Tuesday. Not looking forward to it >.<

Davis' new curriculum is done in a block format. For the next 6 weeks we have "basic foundations" which covers general animal handling, basic anatomy, and everything that we need for the next 2 years. Then we have a few weeks of only heme/lymph/coag, then 6 weeks of only musculoskeletal, etc. Focusing solely on one subject at a time should hopefully enhance learning.
We also have labs several times a week and start occasional clinical rotations as early as this week (I have a rotation all day thursday!)
We have PBLs every few weeks too.

Guys, guys, guys. GUYS.

Orientation today! :soexcited:

It's so rare that I lose sleep over excitement, but I'm running on 3 hours right now. YAY!

(I'm also highly caffeinated.)

Coffee is the key to orientation...especially as a leader. The one day I had to be out at New Bolton by 8, which meant I left at 6:30 and got up at like 5:15 so I could feed/walk the dog in time...longggg day.

Week 2!!!

So much anatomy...... im a horrible memorizer. Gotta figure out how to study.

This is just FYI, not me complaining.

For some reason, it doesn't show up on my iPad. 🙁

i hate physio... like with a passion.. bleh and we have it 5 days a week 🙁

I got my first one last week during orientation and it REALLY wasn't bad! I know everyone reacts differently but I was really dreading it. 🙂

Uh yeah. Not at all a fan. Hoping it will get better when we switch profs/get off the molecular level...

I'm getting mine on Wednesday. :scared:

Don't worry that much about it. I just wouldn't plan anything after in case you're really sore/wiped out. Likelihood is that will be the worst of it. So don't worry too much! I had a little soreness after mine and was smidge tired the next day, but that was it.

Could someone lend me a wiener to palpate? I haven't palpated one in quite awhile.

Hey 2017ers, so I know this is a little out of character for this thread but I recently entered a photo contest and actually made the top 10. I think I'm currently in second, so it would mean the world to me if you guys would vote and even share the photo on your timeline. My name is Rachel, and I'm the one in the blue coat on the bay horse over the jump. I'm tagged in the photo and they name me.

Sigh. Is it a bad sign if I am already wishing that Histology was done with for today? I'm only in week 2. 🙁

I'm wondering the same thing. Today I was reminded just how much I totally suck at histology. 🙁

Everyone sucks at histology right now, BD. If you have classmates who are totally cool with it, they're either lying or they've done a crap load of it before. Blood cells are hard at first (heck, they're still hard for me, but I'm improving). A lot of the tissues you're looking at now all look the same and the differences are pretty minor. But you will be fine, I promise.

I wouldn't say I'm *good* at histology but I think it's really fun!

Are you guys using microscopes in your labs? Ours is all done on the computer with a neat program that allows you to zoom way in and out, move all around, and label things as you go. I think it makes our labs a lot more enjoyable than staring into a microscope for an hour plus we work in pairs too which is really helpful in identifying tissue types/talking stuff through. We also had our first radiology lab today and it was so much fun. I love how low-stress histology and radiology are compared to gross anatomy (for me). Tomorrow is a massive gross anatomy lab and I'm not really looking forward to it.

Histology's been really easy for everyone here so far but we've just been doing really basic stuff. I'm holding my breath waiting for the other shoe to drop. We haven't even gotten to red blood cells or anything like that.

Our histo class dumped us into a semester of embryology condensed into three lectures... Yay, vet school! 🙄

I remember everyone saying vet school is like drinking from a firehose, but I think a more accurate description might be that it's like taking 6 summer classes. Everything is super condensed at a very fast pace. I'm already feeling slightly overwhelmed and a little behind and it's only week 2...

FINALLY got my loan money dispersed. Everyone else got theirs on the 10th. For some reason the DoE wouldn't release my funds. Now I'm not poor! Yay!

Also I am going to bed now at 9:45 and I didn't study anything tonight.

Sigh. Is it a bad sign if I am already wishing that Histology was done with for today? I'm only in week 2. 🙁

So, on the CD thing you got - look at the stuff in the little program, but also look at the powerpoints from Dr. Cross. Those images will come up on exams (like, exactly) so it's helpful.

Everyone is talking about how bad Histology is, and I just had my final this past Monday. It wasn't too bad here, but it wasn't my best subject. I'm glad it's over (but I also had it for almost 2 hours everyday for 2 months). You'll make it through. 🙂

And pink and purple (and blue) depends on who's looking at it 🙄 "See the pink part?" No, I see purple. And purple =/= blue. Get your colors straight people.

Ha! HRL and I were very confused as to what qualified as the luminal side vs the serosal side. I am not too bad at determining what kind of tissue I'm looking at, but some of the more minute details about the ground substance and the like are not leaping out at me for the moment. I am much more of a physio person myself.

umm yeah, that was a fun little quiz. At least we got most of it right.
