Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Decided to give the whole getting up at 4 AM thing a try this week. Rolled out of bed at quarter to five this morning, got about two hours of studying in before class. Probably could have done more, but I was distracted - seriously, how does Facebook manage to be so engaging even when no one is online to post anything new??

Best part: came home on this rainy afternoon, made hot chocolate, and immediately rolled into bed with my cat and watched both Zorro movies. Didn't have to feel the least bit guilty about it either. I could get used to this. 😀

Nice!

I've just had the most productive evening since midterms 🙂

Finally getting the plague. I am very proud of my immune system for holding out this long. It's been a long last few weeks. Last exam before Thanksgiving break tomorrow. I can do it!!!!

Mentally I am just exhausted. We finished our small animal anatomy course yesterday and our immunology course today. Our last anatomy exam was over the head and neck and was just so much information, it also had a written component that was cumulative over the entire body. That was rough but I do think they were fare. Immunology was also a lot of information, its such a complicated interlinked subject.

The only class I am in right now is Opthalmology and I love that class. Our final is Monday and after that final we will have not have a class until Tuesday morning when we start Neurology and Parasitology.

I came home after our ophthalmology review and just slept no alarm nothing to wake me up it was awesome.

After the anatomy exam Tuesday/Wednesday, our teacher told us in lecture that we "all need to pass the next practical," so that's promising. And of course someone was just taking the practical today so we haven't got our grades back yet...I just want to know if I passed.

Got a B on that exam, for both practical and written!

Starting to panic a little about finals. Didn't do so well on a couple of midterms and if I don't nail the finals for those classes I could be in deep trouble. 😱

Doesn't help that our finals schedule really only gives us one day to prepare for anatomy final. Not cool AVC, not cool.

Don't panic. That won't help you. Start now. Study now in little bits so you don't feel so overwhelmed. Study until you are familiar with the material then stop. Review it again later. You'll be alright. One foot in front of the other.

lol, I've been doing that since day 1. That's why it's so concerning that I didn't do well on a couple of midterms. :bag:

IM FREE, for the evening! Start Parasitology and Neuroscience tomorrow.

Also putting things like cricothyroid cartilage instead of just cricoid cartilage annoys me when I knew what I meant to write.

Isn't that annoying? I've never lived down writing "proper ligament of the ovary" on a first-year anatomy practical .... when it was a testicle on the table in front of me. "Oh yeah... LIS... he's the vet student who can't tell the difference between a testicle and an ovary..." I knew exactly what it was, of course; something just short-circuited in my head between seeing it, recognizing it, and writing the answer.

This explains all of the sexual confusion in ww games that you seem to have...... 😉😛

I put tibial tuberosity of the ulnar bone.... nothing makes you feel more like you shouldn't be in vet school than mistakes like those....

Have an actual fun vet school related activity today. Suture wet lab this evening had super limited spots and I was lucky enough to get in. Hopefully it's awesome and doesn't stink!

I am so tired of group projects. I want to study. Finals in 2.5 weeks and I want to get started now!!!

I got into that at my school too! Thought it would be awesome but instead the people doing it for us spent the whole time selling RAVS to us and assuming we all knew how to suture at all. They showed us tips and tricks that made no sense because I didn't know how to suture or ligate. At least I got a suture board out of it!

Tomorrow around noonish my Thanksgiving break begins!!! I cant wait to spend the next week in NY with my husband.. Cant get out of Missouri fast enough!!!

I found out the other day that we actually get off four whole weeks for Xmas this year - the 13th to the 13th. I would have thought we would start back on the 6th or whatever.

My apartment is a wreck.

And I don't even care.

Trying to convince myself to take some time to clean up the papers that are EVERYWHERE at least tonight. I make a mess of a workspace, then move to a new space. Then make a mess, then move. There's no where left....lol.

I had two days off for Thanksgiving. 2.5 weeks at Christmas.

Long summers are great and all, but man, some time off right now would be nice. 3 weeks left in the semester. :scared:

We also don't get American Thanksgiving time off. We got a Monday off for Canadian Thanksgiving (aka Columbus Day).

We have three weeks and change for winter break this year - last exam Dec 13th, back Jan 6th. Three weeks left!

We get two and a half days off here (no class Wednesday past noon).

I am so frustrated with anatomy dissection lab right now. I just feel like I can't do anything right. When I try to look for things on our cadaver (ie, digging nerves out of fascia so they are easier to see), I get fussed at for being in the way. Also, when I don't know what something is or where to find something, I prefer to look at the guide and try to figure it out with the group first (before calling the teacher over and having it shown to me). I'm not offended if you think I'm wrong, but don't get mad at me if I try to defend my answer. And just because I think I'm right doesn't mean I don't want the teacher to come over to point it out. So now, I just sit off to the side and twiddle my thumbs cause I'm absolutely sick of the drama.

Oh, and playing on your phone and talking loudly to your neighbor while a speaker is giving a lunch presentation is just rude. Even if you only came for the free food, at least pretend to pay attention.

We have lab after lunch on Wednesday. 🙁

I had issues with my lab group, too the first semester of anatomy. It was hard to get past the drama, and it impacted my learning for sure. Wish I had some magic advice. I would just go to another group, and say hey, did you find x... Can you show it to me? Most people were willing.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you guys had an afternoon lab that day 🙁. I usually come back to lab on my own or with one other person and go back over the important structures. I wish there was some magic advice too lol, but I also feel like this is a really important life lesson because I will be working with these people (or people with similar personalities) as colleagues in the future. It's better to learn how to work through your differences now rather than later in the real world and risk quitting or getting fired due to personality clashes. At least thats what I keep telling myself 😛

So glad we have no classes until next Monday!
I still have class until noon tomorrow, but at least most of it is intro to vet med and 2 hours of histo lab that won't take 2 hours. Unfortunately there's an anatomy lecture after that so I can't just leave when I'm done with histo.

Bummed that I'm away from home and have class on thanksgiving. On the plus side, last day of class is tomorrow.

Happy thanksgiving everyone!

I have not studied in two days. It is a really bizarre feeling.

Having a hard time deciding what to do for Christmas. I have a little over 3 weeks off and was originally planning on flying home for 2 weeks and leaving the cats in Missouri. But now I'm thinking I should spend more time at home because I'm going to be horribly bored with no one here over Christmas break for the week I'll be back before classes. In order to do that though it would make more sense for me to drive home with the cats and stay the full three weeks. I don't want to leave them for so long and it would cost a lot to have someone watch them that whole time (it's going to be expensive just for the 2 weeks).

That being said it's a 20+ hour drive home which is a lot. I'd do it in two days and the cats are great in the car, but it's still a lot. I think it would be worth it with being able to stay an extra week but I'm not sure I want to do the drive alone. I was hoping one of the girls in my class would want to drive with me but she's staying here. I might be able to get one of my friends to drive back to Missouri with me so then I would only do one way by myself. Meh, I don't know. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm really torn.

Cost benefit, what means more to you?

-2 weeks at home
-paying for kitty watcher
-cost of flying
-a week back in Missouri with no promise of any company

vs
-3 weeks at home
-but...cost of driving, which includes 4 days time. So if you spend four days driving, that's really just an extra 3 full days of being at home, yes?

Personally, I hate long drives, especially solo. And while gas isn't cheap, I'd wager you'd save cash since plane tickets are expensive, and then you don't have to pay for a sitter. But in the end money aside, a few more days with the family versus a week of boredom alone back by school, I'd take the extra days at home. The older we get, the further into school we get, and the busier we become preparing for our careers, who knows how much visiting home time will happen.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards more time at home. I lose 2 days when I'm flying anyways, so it's really just two more days of travel. Plus I really miss my cats when I go away...

I make the 20hr drive home every break and made it with my senior dog until this summer. Two days for me too- the hotel was the most stressful part, for her.
Do you find 3 weeks is enough to recover between drives? That's my only real worry is that I will absolutely dread having to drive back.

I did ~30 hours, 6 weeks apart. I think 20/3 wks would be fine. But then again, I like driving. And I prefer to drive alone for the most part. Didn't have pets with me for this trip, but when I did it last year, I had both dogs with me. I usually do one long day (~18 hours) and one shorter day (~12 hours). Lots of music and audiobooks, and splurge on a semidecent hotel so you can get a good night's sleep in comfort. And bring alcohol, if you are into that kind of thing. Helps you sleep 😉
