Class of 2020... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
2020ers (or older)! Shoes? Did any of y’all find any dress shoes that are legit comfy? My ballet flats are my default dress shoe and they’re so uncomfortable.

also steel toed boots for equine/ rum rums? Any type in particular?

I never wore steel toes for equine, just scrubby Danskos or boots.

And ya know I'mma recommend Rothy's so. They aren't like... I'm sure there are more comfortable shoes out there, but for flats they are great and they are totes washable so, bring on the blood and pee and stuff.

Fun fact my brother is actually trying to go to Portland in June to propose to his girlfriend (they both LOVE Portland pinots). And then he found out I’ll be in Portland in June and was very upset

If she likes roses, I know a place...

I don't do wine but I also have hook ups for a chocolate souffle to make you cry and a skirt steak that you will remember forever

I basically live in my Bob’s. They don’t last me super long, like 6 months tops, but they’re super comfortable and only like $20 a pair.

You only have like, a handful of LA and equine rotations right? Buying steel toed boots just for that when you’re never gonna wear them again probably is just overkill. Ag here we’re all required to wear rubber boots for easy cleaning. I’m using the cheap ones I bought for first year anatomy (and have used for all Ag related things through out vet school). For equine here most people just wear whatever boots they have or even tennis shoes. I wouldn’t buy something special.

interesting! I’ll look into those!

I was literally in the middle of typing up a message to you because I couldn’t remember the brand you mentioned before

Yeah four total weeks of FA / equine! I don’t have any boots so I’d have to look into anything. They told us no tennis shoes allowed

Honestly if you’re able I would just wear rubber boots if you have them from anatomy. Or buy a cheap pair at Walmart. Especially on farm. I was planning to use those for equine too, but it was cold AF so I used my bogs snow boots instead.

I love my Tieks ballet flats. They are expensive (especially on a vet school budget) but they are worth it in my opinion...these are the first dress shoes I’ve ever owned that haven’t given me a single blister. I now have 6 pairs and I wear them like 95% of the time nowadays.

Rothys are a bit cheaper, their washability is nice, and people seem to love them just as much as people love their Tieks. You can definitely argue that the Rothys points are more dressy than Tieks but no one has ever commented negatively about the professionalism of my Tieks, even when I wore my black ones with a suit during interviews for academia jobs.

Yep, I wore plain old rubber boots for my large animal stuff (as did our professors).

None of my recommendations are cheap buttttt if you want a pair of boots to last I loooooove my Dunlop's I bought this year. If you just need to get through rotations, plain cheap rubber boots may be fine (though would have made my feet cry).

I also have the world's flattest feet so I need a lot of help with support otherwise I hate my life at the end of the day. I recently discovered Vionic shoes for dressy type shoes and now have two pairs (a sandal and a dressy lace up shoe) and also am loving these. Probably better options out there for people with normal feet but anyone needing arch support and heel cushioning, these are amazing. And way cheaper than my custom orthotics that only fit in my ugly running shoes

Haha I love them! Been wearing a pair for my entire small animal rotation and my feet are minimally sore (amazing for me) similar to if I'm wearing my customs.

There are probably a million threads for this but I'm in lecture & feeling lazy... Zuku or VetPrep? Any overwhelmingly strong opinions?

I honestly don't think it matters. I preferred the look and feel of the vetprep site over zuku. I also preferred the vetprep timed quiz options. They were the same cost for me with the discount vetprep offers if you sign up for whatever website it was that I signed up for and then forgot about. Vetprep app also works excellently if you're like me and might do a lot on your phone during breaks and things. Don't know about the app options for zuku but I feel like my zuku friends struggled more on that aspect?

Vionic shoes
Just took a peek and they have a clone of my favourite sandals that are falling apart but also cost me $8 on clearance in 2016 so they owe me nothing. But I can't afford them <sobs>

Keep an eye out for sales! That's when I got both my pairs and they do pretty decent mark downs!

@cdoconn june is one of my favorite times! It can def still be a bit rainy that time of year but weather is usually pretty decent. The Rose Festival is early to mid June so you’ll definitely have to check that out. It’s amaaaazing

I think I posted mine in that other thread where we were talking about shoes. I have multiple pairs of ankle boots that are super comfy. Black sketchers for rotations where I can get away with being less dressy.

I don't really think steel toes are necessary tbh. Especially not if you're only gonna use them for a few rotations.

Literally doesn't matter at all.
Zuku touts being better for visual learners, but there are very few images on the NAVLE so I'm not sure how much even that matters. My friend did 7% of zuku (she was the rep so got it for free). I did less than 30% of vetprep. We both passed.

As far as dress shoes, I don't know about OSU but I found that our small animal clinicians don't particularly care about how dressy your shoes are. I bought a pair of Crocs flats before starting clinics, but they make my feet sweat too much without socks and look weird with socks, so I never wear them anymore. Most of the time I wear Sperry's, or a lot of people wear Bobs/Toms, or even regular tennis shoes.

For large animal I agree I wouldn't get steel-toed boots if you don't plan on using them in the future. I got these hiking boots and they were pretty comfy: https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/magellan-outdoors-womens-harper-ii-shoes#repChildCatid=5519056 For farm calls (and necropsy) I got a $30 pair of rain boots from Walmart and added some Dr. Scholl's insoles.

Late to the shoe party, but I own like 6 pairs of Vionics, so definitely recommend if you need lots of arch support.

They hurt me in the wallet, but also make it so I don't noticeably limp by lunchtime so they're worth it to me (also cheaper than the $400+ custom orthotics that my insurance won't pay for despite 2 podiatric surgeries :yeahright:).

I've definitely snagged several on sale for up to about 50% off by keeping an eye on them over several months (black friday ftw), and sometimes other vendors have them for cheaper (Amazon, zappos) - if you see one that you like you can try googling the name of the shoe to see if another site is offloading their inventory for cheaper.

I don't know where I've said this before, but some very kind soul made a massive Quizlet with the questions from those modules. Just throw a couple of the questions into Google to find it. I unfortunately never saved the lonk
I would just like you to know that I passed this information on to the 4th years on my rotation to me this week  they are appreciative

How’s everybody doing?

I’m on a great externship right now with good people, good hours, and good experience. Feeling healthier mentally/as a person than I have in a little while, even with match day looming. Thankful.

When is match again? I keep forgetting and no one in my close friend group is going the internship route haha

Yeah, FHA is in my top 4. We'll see what happens...
Sweet, let me know if you end up going there? I grew up down the street from the hospital and know the head of surgery/want to do my internship there as well. Can help with housing and other recs etc.

Between Spay/Neuter Alliance and the shelter medicine rotation at school I've gotten to do SO many surgeries over the past few weeks! I'm feeling way more confident about my spay/neuter skills, and I still have another week on shelter med to keep improving. The job search is ongoing, so that's a little stressful, but clinics life is pretty great at the moment.

What kind of jobs are you looking for? 🙂

Small animal and exotics GP, somewhere close-ish to home, so basically Missouri/Oklahoma/Arkansas/Kansas is where I'm looking. The larger the city the better, lol. I've found a few places I'm planning to apply to this weekend, but it's been more difficult than I expected to find listings for places that see exotics! I've been told a lot of places don't start looking to hire someone until February/March, so I'm not too worried at this point, but seeing classmates already having jobs and houses settled has me a bit jealous.

Just put your resume up on the avma jobs board, and maybe state vet associations in the areas you're looking for. I get like 2 cold calls a week and maybe 4-6 emails from places just mostly in MI trying to find interested candidates.

If you post it, they will come.

I solidified my next rotation (that starts Monday) today! I'll be headed to Chicago to see what life's like as a port vet at OHare.

It'll be quite a bit different from what I've been doing, and I'm really lucky the USDAs paying for it! And I'll have the opportunity to earn a decent amount of OT too

@LyraGardenia While having an exotics mentor can be clutch, I started my first job and made myself the exotics person. Can be tough without certain equipment but a lot of drugs are similar and I think if you prep, read frequently and get as much CE as you can, you can make it work (although of course it may be slow going at first! Make sure to advertise through the clinic Facebook, post some notices at the clinic, etc) For me personally, a “The Pink Book” (Quseneberry) and VIN have been so helpful.

Current job has one other doc that will see exotics but overall I’m their girl and have gotten to do plenty of medical cases and surgeries (both routine and sick). Don’t let it stop you if you otherwise love a place 🙂

I posted my resume to the AVMA site I think in September and got a bunch of emails and a few calls, but most places were outside the area that I'm looking in. I also got an actual snail mail letter from some guy looking for a mixed animal practitioner, lol. But I haven't tried state vet associations, I'll look into that!

Personally I really don't think I'd be comfortable being the only doctor in a practice that sees exotics, both from a knowledge base and equipment standpoint, and I would hate for exotics patients to have to be turned away (or for my colleagues to be forced to muddle through seeing them) on any days I'm not working. But that's great that it worked out for you! I'll think more on it if I still don't have any leads in the next few weeks.

I’m pretty happy right now. Got the job of my dreams and my health has greatly improved. Just gotta get through internal med right at the end and find a temp job to save money for my big move in August!

That’s OK too 🙂 (FWIW, when I’m out, exotics are turned away unless it needs euthanized.)

This is what happens at my vet too. Only one sees exotics and if it’s only the other vet that day, they can’t be seen that day but we keep a list of other local vets who see exotics that they can call if it’s something urgent and can’t wait until the next day that vet is in.

I recently finished my shelter med rotation too and so glad to have improved my spay/neuter skills! Although I'm still nervous about doing large dog spays and animals currently in-heat and/or just had a litter.... I had a couple of those, and everything is just so friable and vascular, I even dropped a pedicle when tightening a ligation (uterus literally just ripped...) and it really freaked me out! But everything turned out okay! Good luck on your job search!!

They’re a whole new ball game. I loved spaying puppies and kittens, but big dogs... yikes. I had an older small breed dog for one of my spays, and the uterus was so floppy and disgusting, it was falling apart with the slightest of touch. When I cut the stump, pus came exploding out from it. It was nice to have an experience cutting a closed pyo and I’m sure the dog appreciated it, but man I was not ready.

Only 5.5 more rotations to go (78 days)! I end on equine medicine though and I want to cry. Not how I wanted to end my vet school career! But I finally found an apartment for the first two years of my residency! That was such a relief and weight off my shoulders. Overall, I’m feeling pretty good about things currently.
