I've been having doubt about my life plan recently...I think having to make decisions for real has put me into panic mode a bit. But having a conversation with my mentor today was very grounding and a reminder of why I want to do what I want to do.

I found this guide and it was like “make it into three paragraphs of like what you’re looking for in a hospital, your goals/ skills, and what you can provide to the hospital.

what I can provide to the hospital:
  • I’m sometimes funny
  • I make a lot of self deprecating jokes
  • I buy a lot of snacks when I get stressed and will share
  • that’s it

I did the same thing with a diversity event my school was hosting.

I originally signed up back in March and it was going to be in April, but was cancelled. Then like late September or early October I got an email saying "thank you for volunteering to be a panelist, these are the information sessions"

I legit didn't even remember signing up for it in the first place, and definitely didn't agree to the new date, yet somehow went through with it

So are you just gonna not specialize if you don’t get into your one internship? Or apply the next cycle? Or are you not planning on specializing and were just doing the internship for that extra year of good practice before gp?

I have 6 hospitals that I would be absolutely elated if I matched with. Then 7 hospitals I would be pretty satisfied with. Then 5 that I would be okay with that would work out. And finally there's 2 that I would be good with them, but they're not my top ones.

If I had balls I would only apply for 6 but I do not bc the scramble scares me. And why apply for 13 when you can apply for 20.

Uiuc has a lovely one and you’re the only shelter intern so you get to see anything cool that comes in vs last year when they tried having two and only one would be on surgery or community med at a time so they didn’t always get to see the cool things

If I don't match, I will figure out the next step at that point. Sometimes things just aren't meant to be at that point in time, and that's ok. There is no rule that says you have to follow a linear path to a magical single end point with this stuff -- I live the proof of that every day.

To answer your overall question, I could see myself enjoying a number of career paths, in both the short term and long term. My one requirement is a decently high concentration of cats. They like me.

I did one recently where we got into surgery so fast that one of the puppies (still covered in fetal goo) legit kicked at me as I was working on clamping off the umbilicus to hand it to an assistant.

That was a first. Most energetic little Frenchie puppies ever, super adorable mom. Owner was a douchecanoe.

I literally have no experience with anything involving teeth at all. Like none. It’s like this giant ominous hole in my education...they got to the mouth and just said nahhhh we don’t need to teach that.

(I should add that, in fairness, I had a couple dentistry lectures and was supposed to have a couple labs, but covid. But still dentistry is not well covered here and I feel especially bad for people that will actually have to do a lot of it, which thankthelord will not be me.)

Our old curriculum had very little dentistry.. 3 lectures but no labs. Only got hands on experience if you took the elective rotation, which was not always available. I've never done an extraction on anything. Thankfully our new dentist is super invested in teaching, and new curriculum has a half credit course with labs and everything.

Yeah, we used to not have a ton but recently got some amazing and invested dentistry faculty so we had a handful of lectures on equine dentistry and then maybe 5-10 on SA dentistry spread between ~2 courses. SA dentistry is currently an elective rotation here but they just upgraded their facility (used to run out of essentially a closet lol) and from what I've heard it's going to be required for all SA trackers next year. I don't believe equine dentistry is required for large/mixed but that makes sense given that many people in those tracks intend to be food animal focused and may never actually perform dental floats depending on their career path, whereas dentistry is more common in SA medicine as a whole unless you specialize.
 
Y'all, I have become torn on life goals. Don't want to do clinical medicine any more, but have only realized that in the last 10 days while on a very intense rotation here and having the NAVLE. So not sure if it's just burnout at this point. Trying to find the balance of doing my fair share this rotation while also becoming super disinterested overall in clinical medicine.

Not going to start looking at jobs until this weekend. We'll see how I feel after the next rotation.

I would suspect burnout if you feel this way now after being on neuro and didn't feel that way on earlier rotations. Neuro is rough, very rough. Remember life in GP (if that's what your goal was previously) is wildly different from life in a tertiary referral center. Each has their pros and cons of course. And life as a student is wildly different from life as a doctor. Not saying there's anything wrong with deciding not to do clinical medicine of course, just saying it does sound like there is some burnout playing into this based on timing. Hang in there :biglove:

I keep saying that if they let me graduate tomorrow, I'd be gone. 😆 So I feel like burn out is a strong source of my current apathy cause I was much more gung ho on oncology last block, and I suspect I'll be more gung ho again on the next block which will be cardio. Solely GP was never the ultimate goal (would be fine doing ER/GP mix, but not the ultimate love of my life), and what I am thinking about now is something I've always wanted to be involved in since even high school. It just got put on the backburner for a while.

And you know, that's ok too, because there is so much to vet med outside of the "typical" path. No reason not to look into other things 🙂

Is it possible to do your regular er/gp and that other thing on the side? I know my gp is part of a local university’s (non vet school) IACUC board outside of regular work so it could be possible.
