Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

Hi 2021s!

For those of you completing/already completed an externship at an out of state institution how are you handling the state quarantine protocols? Like I know states like New York require the 14 day quarantine but sometimes you don't have a 14 day cushion between two rotations.

Personally, I just wouldn't be able to go. But my most of my out of state externships were canceled because of covid

I rescheduled a vacation block after my rotation because the place I was going to didn't have a quarantine period before hand but my school had one after. Turns out it got cancelled anyways so no biggie.

I also would be unable to do an externship like this. I'm out of off blocks that I could use to make that sort of cushion.

My advice for you guys is to schedule any/all externships that you really want, regardless of the shenanigans you'll have to do to get there; then have a backup plan of things you could potentially do if that externship is cancelled either by the site or your school. I know for my school, there's still 5 months till 2022 starts clinics. Everything about COVID can/probably will be different by then.

luckily (?) Oklahoma doesn't require a quarantine upon re-arrival, and none of the hospitals I've been to are in states that required quarantines.

We aren't allowed to do any out of state externships here at A&M. Unfortunately, I had one planned in January and had to cancel but thankfully found a great one to replace it with in Texas.

My school let me (and others) do an out of state externship, I just needed to tell them about the COVID protocols in the facility, where I was staying, what personal measures I would be taking, and how I would be getting there. I think they were fine with most things so long as you weren't exposed at the externship and they didn't have an outright rodeo response to COVID at the place

I'm on call Sunday, but aside from that... another rotation is done. And I'm officially done with split rotations!*

Also hopefully done with (live) large animals. I had to see one horse on this rotation. I know I'll have some large animals on pathology but hoping I won't have any on my remaining rotations.

*Pending COVID not causing more of them. If there is one thing we've learned... everything is subject to change

Yesterday I was like okay everything is going to be fine. Today I've convinced myself that I surely failed.

I imagine this is going to be the back and forth conversation until scores are released. Ugh.
Pretty much. Wishing you good results! The panic for me went away a bit after the first week out and then ramped up again about a week before I thought I might hear back. No amount of "be patient" or "believe in yourself!" messages is going to help, but know that it's common to feel this way and that you will get through it with time

It’s all gonna be fine. Have you got your scores? Are the still releasing them once a month?

I got mine last month! I think there's a chance they'll release October scores next week so we'll see if the once a month score releases stay, but I think they will

Remember you've done your part, there is nothing that worrying about it can do for you now except give you anxiety. Keeping that in mind works for me for most things like this...out of my hands, out of my mind. But YMMV depending on your particular brain's tendencies. I am particularly good about forgetting things as soon as they are no longer in front of me, which is both a blessing and a curse.

I'm on call so I keep periodically checking the ER board and then holding my breath every time I see an eye related case on there. I do not enjoy being on call. I like to either be working or not... not at home anticipating the possibility that I might have to start working any minute now.

I get that feeling... last time I was on call, I accidentally set my wake up alarm to my phone ring tone, so it went off when I was deep asleep, and I picked up my phone and tried to answer my alarm.

A super groggy “... hello, this is Cdo” and was very confused when no one responded

I love it

I'm on call for anesthesia tonight and know I'm getting called in, but frustrated because I'm on call until 8 AM but they have an exam for us for this rotation from 7:30 - 9 AM. I'm like... should I really be taking this on what is likely to be a couple hours of sleep and during a timeframe when I can still get called in? Or even better, a timeframe where I might still be running a case?

They publish our ER/ISO/ICU on call via the intranet site for the VTH. In theory, it's supposed to be posted two weeks in advanced. We start a new block tomorrow and the schedule is *still* not posted online. Another student apparently went and found a copy in the ER and posted it to the class Facebook page. Well, I had Mr. Bats change my Facebook password until after my NAVLE and have no access. Thankfully, my core friend group sent the relevant pages to me. Still very annoyed. We shouldnt have to rely on social media to get required information from the hospital 🙄

ugh that is so annoying! Glad your friends sent it to you.

Man I’m surprised they post it so far in advanced when IL likes to do everything at the last minute otherwise  we were suppose to get ours the Friday before the next block, but on more than one occasion it was the Monday morning it started grumble. Every class complains every year and asks it to be posted earlier, and every year they claim they can’t do that because blah blah blah. But then claim at other times it was made two weeks before the next rotation and that’s why we couldn’t swap less than a month before a rotation... and then repeat

Honestly, wheres the lie

If it's not "officially" up tomorrow, I'm going to email the tech in charge of scheduling. Like. Come on.

I didn't end up being called in, so that's great!

It’s really too bad that ECC peeps (of the academia variety) don’t do surgery because I really love ER. I feel so much more comfortable on my second block and have seen some really interesting cases. I thrive in the crazy.

I might almost be talked into switching specialty plans if they did. But no surgery is a huge deal breaker.

Why not ER doctor but just not a criticalist?

couple of things:
#1: yaaassss, come to the dark side. That’s exactly why I switched from surgery to ECC.

#2: I met a criticalist at my last externship who did all of his own emergency surgeries, and I was baffled. “I mean I won’t do hemis, but I’ll do anything else”
Because I also really like academia and would like to stay in this realm. Da struggle.
#3: alternative suggestion, you could work in academia as an ER doc. Not specifically boarded, but you can still stay in the realm of academia, teach, do research, etc.

You might have to do a couple years out in practice, but if you’re good, I’m sure they’ll hire you. My school is looking for an ER doc right now, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I love my equine medicine rotation because the clinicians/ residents/ intern is absolutely fantastic, and I love my rotation mates. But oof they sure work you hard during it. I’ve been at the hospital for 30 of the last 40 hours, or 80 hours this week, not including tomorrow.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m learning a lot and I do love medicine but oof.

Plus one of my patients is on IV DMSO and I’m learning that I’m allergic to dmso because my throat hurts, I sneeze at least 2 times, and I have a pounding headache everytime I’m remotely close to him/ his neuro stall where the smell is just compounding.

Yes, you can ... you can DO all of it. 🙂

[Note: I am human clinical, and academic, and research ... and love it all!]

So I have the flu... And tomorrow was supposed to be the day I took the NAVLE. It's been a rough few weeks but this certainly is the kicker. The online rescheduling tool does not work on any browser/phone/computer. I had a friend double check me with her info so I wouldn't go crazy. Since it's the weekend there is no one to call because no one's working. I got a doctor's note and am overall fine but come ON! I've had a rough enough time the past few weeks without this on top. I'm just really hoping I can reschedule before Dec 31st.

Which other states?
Still deciding tbh. Mostly because I'm also trying to make sure the bf is happy to live there too. He doesn't want to live in MI but since is my home state I'd be fine staying here for a first job even though I know I'll likely leave later. Especially since he's not with me now so MI has the obvious benefits of I won't be far from everyone I know. If I go through packing up and moving states I want it to be one I can see myself staying in for the foreseeable future. Tentative list right now is IN, KY, TN, and NC.
