Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would start looking now! Or start working something out with someone in the class if you want a roommate. Last year I wanted to move to a house rather than apt and I was looking now, I think we found it in June and moved in 8/1! I give yourself two weeks, it seems like enough time to figure out if you are gonna need to get anything else before we start class!

Welcome to MSU and....

GO GREEN
It's so hard looking for housing when you don't know the area (which area is the good side vs the bad side of town). 🙁 I have 2 dogs and would like to rent a house with a yard (if possible), and have already started looking. I also started looking up apartments as well. My plan is to move up there the first week of August so I have time to get settled and find a place where I can continue my dog sports (agility, nosework and obedience) once school starts.

You can PM some areas and I can let you know what I know! 🙂

Thanks! I'll definitely take you up on that offer! I live in NC and am planning on going up there the first of June to look at some places I've found. 🙂

Lol, we're just a bit vocal lol. We can move it to the MSU thread if it's bugging anyone 🙂
No no it's no worries just pointing out a fun fact 😀

I'm so excited to be moving back up north where there is an actually winter! I'm originally from New England and moved down to NC 3 years ago.
where in new england? I'm from new york but went to undergrad at UMass 🙂

I definitely recommend asking around here to see where good areas are. Things can look great online but then you find out you’re in a horrible location and stuck with it. Other people on here (prob ask on the MSU thread) can also give some input too!!

Southern New Hampshire! 🙂

Exactly! Which is why it's so hard looking for places online. They may look great, but be in a not-so-good area. I'm planning on taking a trip up there in early June to look at a few places, but would love some more input on which areas I should consider and which areas are best to avoid.

Yeah, I’ve been having similar struggles. Currently looking for housing and I’ve gotten input from 3 different people and it’s still hard
Going down there and looking at some places at the end of the month and hopefully will be able to secure something.

Close! Manchester! 🙂

Not sure if it's helpful up there but down here in Texas I always used Trulia to look up property. At the very bottom it will shade the area in colors to indicate crimes reported with the police as well as how good the schools are. Might be useful.

Oh and Google maps allows you to drop yourself in street view to see what's around. That's what I did for the duplex I just signed for.

Is anyone else kind of freaking out? I just registered for classes and realized I’m going to be taking 23 credit hours. I’m so afraid I’m going to fail I’m planning on doing literally nothing but going to class and study every single day. I knew you took a lot of hours in vet school and I was prepared for that, but man 23 is a lot.

I felt the exact same! I knew it was going to be a lot but seeing it in an hourly schedule was intimidating.

Take a moment to breathe! It’s going to be okay. It takes about a month of panic until you really get into the swing of things. It’s very very important to do things for yourself. Schedule them. Stick to them. I workout with a trainer at a set time twice a week, I see a therapist once a week, and I don’t study after 5 pm on a Friday.

You’ll find things that work for you, things that don’t. And the worst part is, they vary from class to class. For example, I make a quizlet during my pathology class using split screen because my professor speaks slow and the slides are verbatim. In other classes, I’ll make something after class/ at night instead.

I probably study about 4 hours a night, unless there’s an emergency/ an exam in which I’ll study much more. I found that my best approach to studying is: when you go home, review the lectures of the day. Make a quizlet or study guide or whatever you want to use to review. Repeat for the classes you have. Obviously it’s not possible for some classes (anatomy lab) but there’s still things you can review. If you have any questions, write them out and you can ask your professor before/ after class the next time you see them. Check the time. If you have extra time you can watch an episode of TV or you can do minimal studying for something that you didn’t quite grasp from a previous day’s lecture.
The weekend, I reserve for any lectures I didn’t get a chance to review, or serious heavy studying. If you’re unlucky, you’ll be like us an have an exam or two a week, and that’s where the weekends are important.

But I emphasize take time for yourself. Don’t lose who you are because you’re studying for school. If you’re religious, take time to go to church, take time to pray. If you like to hike, take a couple hours on the weekend to go hike. It will recharge you, and it will really keep you from burning out.

Lastly, don’t be afraid!!! All of us vet students/ vets on SDN have gone through the same thing. You’re not alone. If there’s things that you don’t understand, ask for help. And understand that you aren’t expected to be a natural born talent in every single subject . Some classes you will probably struggle on, and that’s okay.

Wow. Well said!!! 🙂

Did you find it possible to take notes out of a notebook in class at all? I'm a very visual learner and loved taking notes during class when I was in undergrad. Not quite sure if that will be possible in vet school...

And kuddos for emphasizing making time for yourself. I plan to continue with my dog sports (agility, nosework and obedience) even when I'm in school as one of the great stress relievers for me is working with my dogs. 🙂

So I use an iPad Pro in school with an Apple Pencil and a Logitech Create case. It’s the most customizable (imo) because it lets me write or type or doodle however I like. I’ve had classes where I used notebooks before (one required me too, the other was anatomy and I don’t bring my iPad into anatomy lab). I have classmates who use binders and print the lecture slides but I’m not a fan because a) there’s SO MUCH PAPER b) our schedule changes frequently and if you forget a binder at home it’s a hassle c) sometimes professors don’t post lectures until right before, and it's a lot easier to download it than run off and go print it.

I have one friend who hand writes all of her notes in a notebook, and it works for her, but when she can’t write down all the important stuff/ the professor moves on I can see it frustrate her.

Thank you so much for your advice. I’m sure after a while I’ll get in the swing of things.

It takes a while, but you’ll get it! But enough about that now! Go celebrate! Be happy! Do fun things you never thought you would! A year ago, you never thought you’d actually be where you are now, so rejoice!

Take a deep breath, it'll be okay. The number one thing I can tell you is that you should never feel bad when you're doing something other than studying. Don't get me wrong, vet school is a ton of work and you will have to spend a lot of time studying, but if you make that 100% of your time both you and your grades will suffer. Strike a balance.

If you keep your nose to the grindstone 100% of the time, you'll take your whole face off.

You’re right. I’ve heard so much about the importance of work life balance. I don’t want to get burnt out my first semester. For the past few weeks I’ve been really excited about all the cool things to do around Fort Collins and this morning I felt like it didn’t matter because I wouldn’t have time to do anything anyways. I’m sure there’s a balance somewhere in between. Thank you for your advice 😍

Awe don’t freak out and honestly ignore that 23 credit hours thing. Honestly I have no idea the number of credits I took either semester. It just doesn’t matter. You got this. First semester is a lot of getting in the swing of things figuring out what works for you in terms of studying, but personally once I had an exam in every subject I felt like I knew what I needed to do to learn and do take exams. Everyone is different and what works for me wont work for you, but you’ll figure it out.

I definitely studied more in vet school than I did in undergrad (just as I studied more in undergrad than I did in HS), but there were also plenty of nights that I didn’t study. Vet school is your full time job over the next four years, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up all your fun. On the contrary, do things that make you happy or you’ll go nuts. For me, that meant never studying on a night after I had an exam (except during Finals). That also meant taking a day every so often when I could and working at a clinic. It mean making really good friends and going to lunch or a movie on occasion. Your vet school friends will become some of the most important people in your life because no one will understand what your going through except them. It’s really hard when your in vet school but everyone else is out in the real world living. The real world people don’t understand your schedule or your struggles, but your classmates certainly do. I’m so thankful for mine. My cats totally keep me sane too. Coming home to them everyday and having them around when I was stuck home studying on the weekends made my life all that much better.

Also, don’t stress about grades and the quicker you learn not to compare yourself to your classmates, the happier you’ll be. Your all in this together, but your also all going down different paths and have different experiences that got you there. You might be great at anatomy but your friend is better at Histology. Help each other and remember that your worth is not determined by the numbers that make up your GPA. Pass your classes. Learn what you need to know to become a better doctor. The rest is honestly details.

They’re going to throw a ton of material at you and expect a lot, but they’re ultimately giving you a lot of responsibility, so they should be, right? If the faculty at your school are anything like the faculty at mine, they will go above and beyond.

You got this. Really.

Going down there and looking at some places at the end of the month and hopefully will be able to secure something.

When you going to be down here?!?! If I'm in town, we could get lunch/give you a personal tour of the school/leave you alone to do your own thing/etc. lol.

Also, Orange and Blue are the only ways to go.

My boyfriend will also be in town, so we'll have to play it by ear if you want to meet up. 🙂

Trying to keep it all together. I stopped thinking about the fall because it was driving me crazy. I'm only thinking one week ahead at a time for the most part - trying to enjoy the time I have before all the crazy begins. I've been slowly checking off boxes in preparation, like financial aide, supplies, etc. without focusing on the work involved. I'll be honest, I'm terrified. I know that is normal, but being a non-trad with kids who are UBER busy, I have a hard time wrapping my head around the balance issue.

I feel ya! I'm a non-traditional student too and, while I'm super excited to be starting school again, the load that will be demanded for each course makes me nervous. I know I'll figure out a routine and that it'll be easier once I do, but I'm nervous until then.

I try not to think about fall either. Not quite relatable, but being a December grad I'm more traditional but having this new found freedom is exhilarating. I'm having such a great time right now! The weather is beautiful- I'm hiking ,biking, kayaking, working a little but not a ton. I'm finishing a book that I WANTED to read. I have a list of things I want to do in my state before I leave. My emotional happiness score is higher than it has been since I can remember.

I've also been slowly checking off those small things as well. Trying not to think about school, enjoy the time off-it's already May! I have so much respect for those of you coming back to school especially those of you with kids and wish you all the best!

Ugh I feel you. Still trying to find a daycare for our baby when school starts that won't cost $1200/month or more that also has space! Love to all the mom's and dads in our class! We can do it!

It’s not a ton, but free money? (Assuming you qualify)
MSU Child Care Grant | Office of Financial Aid | Michigan State University
You could also check and see if MSU has any childcare options, if you haven’t already. Idk if they would, but they have a big teaching program and I know my high school had a preschool because we had early childhood education classes, so maybe MSU has something?

Also IDK if MSU has it, but my undergrad had a childcare center that was partially covered by student fees. Then you kick in the difference. Do they have anything like that?

Yes, they have a daycare, and we are on the waitlist 🙂 I am planning on applying for the 1K grant, but don't qualify for the reduced tuition if we even get off the waitlist. Sounds like the list is long, not sure why the University doesn't expand the center when there is such a high demand to get in!

Thanks for the ideas guys! [emoji8]

I have faith in you that you'll figure it all out step by step. It will be a transition, but just like every other transition in your life that you've tackled, you will also tackle this one 🙂.

You got this Lauren!

Well....I planned on cutting back on my full-time work hours over the summer but it looks like I'll be doing quite the opposite. My 3 year pup (see my profile pic for her cuteness) had a couple high-grade mast cell tumors removed and we just had out first oncology appointment today, so it looks like additional surgery +/- lymph node removal and chemo is in her near future. 🙁 I already work full-time as a veterinary assistant and am seriously thinking about getting a part-time job on top of that to help pay off her vet bills before school starts. I wouldn't be so concerned with the financial burden of all of this if I would be continuing to work during the fall, which I am not once school starts.

I love her so much and will do anything for her.
