Take a moment to breathe! It’s going to be okay. It takes about a month of panic until you really get into the swing of things. It’s very very important to do things for yourself. Schedule them. Stick to them. I workout with a trainer at a set time twice a week, I see a therapist once a week, and I don’t study after 5 pm on a Friday.
You’ll find things that work for you, things that don’t. And the worst part is, they vary from class to class. For example, I make a quizlet during my pathology class using split screen because my professor speaks slow and the slides are verbatim. In other classes, I’ll make something after class/ at night instead.
I probably study about 4 hours a night, unless there’s an emergency/ an exam in which I’ll study much more. I found that my best approach to studying is: when you go home, review the lectures of the day. Make a quizlet or study guide or whatever you want to use to review. Repeat for the classes you have. Obviously it’s not possible for some classes (anatomy lab) but there’s still things you can review. If you have any questions, write them out and you can ask your professor before/ after class the next time you see them. Check the time. If you have extra time you can watch an episode of TV or you can do minimal studying for something that you didn’t quite grasp from a previous day’s lecture.
The weekend, I reserve for any lectures I didn’t get a chance to review, or serious heavy studying. If you’re unlucky, you’ll be like us an have an exam or two a week, and that’s where the weekends are important.
But I emphasize take time for yourself. Don’t lose who you are because you’re studying for school. If you’re religious, take time to go to church, take time to pray. If you like to hike, take a couple hours on the weekend to go hike. It will recharge you, and it will really keep you from burning out.
Lastly, don’t be afraid!!! All of us vet students/ vets on SDN have gone through the same thing. You’re not alone. If there’s things that you don’t understand, ask for help. And understand that you aren’t expected to be a natural born talent in every single subject . Some classes you will probably struggle on, and that’s okay.
