Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I still have a couple weeks to go before finals. But damn, I still can't believe I'm almost through first year! I feel pretty good because I have done sooooo much better this semester than last, and at least until finals arrive, I feel like the worst is over (all the hell was in February and then the 2 weeks following spring break lol, so now things have slowed down a bit). next exam is renal phys on Friday (you were right @cdoconn , he's pretty great!) and then most of what's left before finals week is just lab finals. Like wow, for the past 2 weekends I've actually felt like I have no pressing studies to attend to, and actually finished my part of a group project without procrastinating, tf is this? I also will be serving as treasurer for 2 clubs next year!

Also, there is a poultry necropsy wetlab happening on Wednesday, and I'm unreasonably excited that I got in because

I decided I needed a puppy in my life!!! So here is the newest addition ❤❤
Finals aren’t for another 3ish weeks! But I do have 10 major tests/labs the next two weeks that I’m blissfully ignoring while I snuggle a puppy
She’s 2mos SF pittie mix. SO picked the name Maisie. It’s his first dog and he’s in love!

What's up guys? Talk to me. School has been going well, just tired all the time (I'm sure everyone can relate)! I just want summer to come soon! We have 12 more days of classes left! Since we're in a major block, we only have 1 final but it's a 2 day final and it covers a whole bunchastuff! We have 2 quizzes left, on cardio and respiratory. But yeah, come back y'all and let's talk about school 🙂

In our last course, Urinary, with just 7 days left! A "midterm" monday and the "final" on friday the 4th!

Yes, I have basically been sucked of all the life within me but I'm hoping summer will bring it back. At least you're done with classes!!! And you got this with your anatomy final!!! We've been done with anatomy since spring break but now we're on physiology for 16 weeks (8 weeks now and 8 weeks in the fall).

Ew I hate phys. It's a problem but it's fine.

6/7 finals done over here so just one more on Friday and OSCEs next week. Friday exam (neuroscience) is open book so the frenzied studying part is finally over, though apparently the neuro final is a beast of an exam regardless. Classes finished for us the Friday before last. Time has flown by since then with the 5 exams haha.

These last few weeks have worn me down; so relieved that the constant studying portion is done. I don't do well with the hours-of-studying-every-single-day-life and 3 weeks of it has made me pretty miserable. However the weather has turned very nice and I've been really really really enjoying soaking up some sun and enjoying being able to be outside again.

On a less complainy note, I decided to do a shadowing shift at the teaching hospital during finals (because why not) and it was 1000% a good decision. The fourth years and clinicians had me doing ultrasounds all night, and a fourth year let me catheterize their patient to get urine. It was wonderful getting some hands on practice and using the knowledge that we've gained all year.

Also, does anyone NOT feel like 25% of a vet? I feel like I still know nothing.
Hahaha I feel like I know so much clinically because of my job but I'm hoping what I learn in class is taking root and somehow expanding my knowledge 😛 but do I feel like in 3 years I'll be a vet?...nooooooopppp

I went to a talk for nutrition club today (bc free food). They brought in a commercial raw diet company.

Oh man it was painful to sit through. I don’t know if they’ve ever given a talk to people in the veterinary field before. Literally all of us students were asking tons of questions and their answers were NOT satisfactory.

The good thing that I realized after it was that I 100% would’ve fallen for the marketing ploy before vet school. Now that I know about nutrition, grain free diets, and parasitology.... yeah, no thanks.

Also had one of those recently. They were telling us to do the studies to back their products. We were like uh no thanks. Plus the guest small animal nutritionist was here I heard it was interesting to say the least.

We've had a few larger companies vaguely like this on campus recently to promote some new diets they came out with and our nutrition team is not entirely pleased. We have rules set in place that a certain percentage of lectures given by companies have to be educational and not promoting products, and apparently it's been a bit of a headache figuring out the best way to enforce that requirement while still acknowledging that at some point students in the program are going to have to figure out how to be critical about these things on their own without outside help.

I asked about protocols they have for killing parasites in say pork tissue.

Their response was “where we source it from, they don’t have parasites”

Me:

I don't know if you get the AVMA SmartBrief at all but they post about raw food recalls probably 3-4x a week at this point haha
definitely don't trust that stuff. Way too many opportunities for badness for no benefit

Semi-related note, I never once considered going vegetarian in my life until parasitology. Now all I can think about when I eat meat is the encysted larvae that may have been in there prior to cooking :barf:
Everytime I'm in immuno and we talk about hypersensitivity I get the itches cause I get hives to horses. Not looking foward to parasitology.

OSCEs next week.

You do OSCEs during first year? That's super interesting.

@RedLauren grief is so individualized that you doing you is what matters. Yall sound so close as a school and I'm glad to hear of the support that yall are giving one another. At this point in my life, you don't "move on", so to speak. To me, it's more of figuring out how to live with the grief and how it has changed your life. Some days suck, others don't, especially as time goes by (though I hate the phrase of time heals all wounds). Keep on keeping on. Grief therapy is a great tool that I will always recommend. <3

We have OSCEs every year; it's a new thing that they only added a few years ago. The 3rd year class have been the guinea pigs for it each year lol. For us it is just basic stuff; animal handling, drug dose calculations, fluid rate calculations, running a UA, interpreting a blood gas, etc.

We only do OSCE during third quarter of our second and third years. Same content though, which isn't surprising.

They literally had an article today about how unsafe raw food is lol

@RedLauren a clinician mentioned him off hand in class today and my breath caught in my throat and stayed there for the rest of the class. There is no pace or timeline for grief, and it's okay to feel like the events that are supposed to give "closure" didn't really close anything at all.

I've lost a few other people this semester and I keep having moments where my grief feels like it's trapped in my chest and has to dig its way out all of a sudden. It's like constantly digging, filling, and redigging the same hole. Sometimes I'm afraid if I don't redig it that I'll forget what it felt like to dig the hole in the first place, even though of course I won't.

But grief isn't supposed to make sense or get easier or just stop. I think it gets different, and you maybe reach an agreement with it. However long that takes to do is nobody's decision to make, though.

Also, @RedLauren don't hesitate to reach out if you want to talk about it or even just go out and be distracted from everything for a while. Spring semester is overwhelming and it can be so difficult to find the emotional reserve capacity to take the appropriate time to grieve and remember.

I also encourage you and your classmates to come to the 1st/2nd year BBQ in a few weeks. We always want to show support and care to y'all and would love to check in with you in a low-key environment.
