I already looked through the sweatshirts and hats and mugs and things at the vetmed bookstore online...may or may not have already sent my mom a graduation present wishlist including these items...

Here is my advice: buy one or two things (shirts, sweatpants, etc) and save your money for when you’re in school. I did that with a shirt and it’s the shirt I wore when I needed to remember why I do this to myself. Definitely helps.

(Also if you’re in between sizes, go larger. You’ll likely gain weight in vet school and then the shirt that was supposed to make you feel better just makes you feel sad...

Not that I’m speaking from personal experience or anything)

Hahaha, I'm not sure what's worse, because on the other end of the spectrum some of us are like.... ****, school was 7 years ago. Mito-what? Powerhouse who? Not gonna know anything :hilarious:

@Caiter92 ’s gonna kick me for saying this, but definitely try to take it as easy as you can this semester. As long as you don’t have a conditional acceptance (you have to graduate with a 3.5, you have to pass physics and biochem, etc) you should have fun this semester. Enjoy learning and spend time with your friends that you’ll never see again. Go to the gym and find a workout class/ exercise thing that you like to do. If you don’t know how to cook, learn to cook and find easy recipes that you’ll love, and being healthy habits to Vet school.

I did none of these. I pushed really hard and ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. Granted I was able to take the summer off, I never really got a chance to “relax”. And it’s so necessary to learn how to do something fun for school.

Oh and @migc trust me, I’m a Type A-only strive for perfection person- hate myself for getting below class average person, and that philosophy is destroying me in vet school. The last month, I’ve been making so many easy mistakes because I was worried about not getting an A on the test, that I ended up not getting an A on the test. And then I would kick my butt studying and I would stress so much for the next test to make up for the last test that I would forget everything and do even worse. So I would get less sleep to study more and then I’d be so tired that I couldn’t remember anything. I think I would get 3 hours every weekday, and then 6 hours on the weekend for almost a month. Which got me in a perpetual cycle of not being able to test well/ remember things because of my anxiety, and then getting more anxiety because I wasn’t able to test well/ remember things.

A lot of people are going to tell you that grades don’t matter. And while I don’t quite agree with the black and whiteness of the statement (because I want to do a residency), I do know that grades don’t matter more than your life does. I’m taking time to figure that out. As long as you can do your best, you’ll figure it out. Please try to value yourself more than your schoolwork. 😍
 
@cdoconn I’m worried I will be the same way in vet school. I just need a 2.0 for this semester but for some reason I still find myself stressing unnecessarily about my grades. My parents expect me to get all A’s every semester and while I’ve done that up to this point, I feel like I can’t let them/myself down this semester. I’m only in 9 credit hours right now- physics 2, animal physiology, and biology seminar and it’s the most laid back semester I’ve ever had. I’m trying to force myself to relax because I know my life will suck (school-wise) for the next four years. I feel like I have an angel and a devil on my shoulders telling me different things 🙄 I mean, who cares if I get a B in physics? I’m going to vet school, I’m gonna be a vet, and who cares about physics... oh wait, I do 😕 even though I don’t want to care. If that makes sense. Lol the struggle is real
 
@SkiOtter okay I didn’t mean that they demand it of me.. I just meant that I’ve always done that so in their minds they don’t see why I wouldn’t just keep doing it

Trust me, I know the feeling. My parents told me to my face that I slacked off last Spring. And then they wonder why I get so stressed about school work. It’s something you have to deal with, I’m sorry. :/
 
Maybe try talking to them about it? If they are aware that you only need a 2.0 for the semester but you are still trying to get good grades, I think they would be understanding of you not killing yourself stress wise to avoid a B. A B is not a bad grade by any means. 🙂 Maybe toss in that vet school is going to involve working the hardest you've worked to date anyway and you want to save your mental power for it. 😉

Just do your best, within reason. Stay as healthy and as happy as possible. If you'll feel good getting those A's and B's, then do it for you, or if your parents are paying the bill then don't waste their money and give it your best shot. My mom is a university professor (youngest tenured female faculty at that university and bringing home A's was like... oh good job. Bring home a B... wtf are you doing? You had one job. and no responsibilities :laugh: Even though I've been out for several years -- my gpa came back to revisit me and I was bloody happy that I did well and didn't have to retake a bunch of classes. Also, I told my grandmother I wanted to go to Vet school when I decided no more med school back in fall 2016, and her response to me, translated, was: what?! now you want to be a doctor for.... donkeys? Well, if that makes you happy... :hilarious: Even my mom bust out laughing (she was the one who said... yo, 30 is approaching and I don't think you want to do med school, FYI...)... so don't worry about upsetting people -- again, do your thing and work hard and the rest will follow.

When I said they expect me to get all A’s what I really meant is that they know I’m capabale of it so if I don’t make all A’s they just think I didn’t try! My parents are the best and are my biggest supporters! They just want me to do my best in school. I have talked to my mom a lot about it. She just thinks that I don’t end my undergrad career with all A’s that I might regret not trying my hardest. I’ve told them a million times how hard vet school will be and how I just want to relax this semester! They really just want the best for me either way 🙂

I’m glad someone can relate to me! My mom didn’t even go to college so she literally has no idea what it’s like. I made a B on my first physiology test and I told her that and she says “well I guess it could have been worse”. 🙄

I promise you that you will not feel bad about undergrad grades in vet school. Yeah if I hadn’t tried at all and didn’t pass a class abd didn’t graduate I’d feel bad, but don’t feel bad if you want to get a B or two. You’ve worked really hard to get to this point. Now you get to enjoy it.

My mom was an elementary education major who didn’t graduate and didn’t understand why I couldn’t just study harder, my dad was an electrical engineer major with a masters in business and he understood very well. Find people who are on your side. :laugh:

Maybe just don't tell your parents what your grades are if you think they might unintentionally contribute to your stress about them.

My parents know that I'm not failing (yet) and that's about all I'm willing to tell them or anybody. Occasionally I might tell them that I did "good" on a test and they are free to interpret that however they wish.

My dad is a mechanical engineer and the smartest person I know so he does get it, it’s mostly my mom!

Hard mom tip: I use “I’m doing okay/ it’s going well” instead of “not failing”. I tried “not failing” and got a longgg lecture out of ur.
 
If it makes you feel better, I'm literally a high school science teacher who got a C in biochem last semester. Effed my life up! (granted, in my defense it was online, medical, and while I worked full time 😉 )

I hate biochem! Ironically I just ran into my biochem professor from last semester on campus and he grilled me about why I’m not currently in biochem 2. I confessed I only took it for vet school :whistle:

My parents have no idea what my grades are, and I feel like even if I told them they'd just be like "oh that's good, right?" (My school does a 4 point scale for each class, no A's and B's) I think my mom has a vague idea of what classes I'm taking but not always. Neither one of my parents went to a university and they work in jobs that don't require any degrees (like not even a high school diploma) now. I forget how different this whole process must be for people whose parents went through it/something similar. I definitely feel way less pressure from my family, just a lot from myself.
 
Yeah so my mom thinks I have a Master's degree, and I don't... I decided against doing a senior thesis and the BS/MS degree midway through senior year, and 100% told her about it when I dropped out of the program. She was sitting front row at commencement and saw me receive a BS diploma, without an MS diploma. Yet, she is somehow in denial and has mentioned my "Master's degree" several times since then. Eventually, I just stopped correcting her. :whistle:

If she couldn't keep even my degrees straight, needless to say, she REALLY never cared about my grades... :hilarious:

Lol I have 2 already and there's definitely no room for more, so this idea is pretty much out the door for me too. 🙄 The right one will come along for you!

And the nice thing about vet med is that you have the opportunity to adopt some real fixer uppers! My Penny was a total dumpster fire when she came into the hospital where I work. Now she's beautiful! Totally satisfying to be a part of her transformation!😍
 
Rather than collecting dogs myself, I have been encouraging my parents to collect dogs for me. They have one (that they got the week I started vet school) and they're taking a second home for a trial run this weekend. At this rate they will probably have about 8 of them by the time I'm a doctor.
