Not to bring down the end-of-semester party with bad vibes, but does anyone else struggle with feeling frustrated by folks who have no idea what vet school is? I know I shouldn’t let it get to me, but knowing how hard we’ve all worked to get here just to be met with this level of ignorance is really irritating. Some of the replies I’ve heard when I tell people I’m in vet school include:

“Oh, have you decided yet if you want to be a vet tech or a vet when you get out?”
“Are you doing that at [the local community college]?”
And my personal favorite:
“What is that, like, a six-week program?” (what?!)

I try to look at it as an opportunity to teach people what vet school actually is, but it also seems frighteningly indicative of the kind of attitudes future clients will have towards us and our advice.

When I told someone I was going to vet school, their reply was, “it’s almost like you’re a doctor!” 😵 I knew vet school was going to be hard, but it turned out harder than I expected. It’s definitely frustrating that people don’t take us seriously.
 
It can be frustrating. However I make sure to say veterinary school and not shorten it to vet school as i see confusion by the general public there. I say I'm a professional student (not grad student or undergrad etc) becoming a doctor +/- of veterinary medicine. Some people are yes legit suprise when I tell them it's like becoming a human dr. I never down play the amount of schooling ever compared to human med instead I always use differentiation like a human dr vs a veterinarian. Or like often I have to say I used to work in a human hospital and people get confused because they dont usually think of vet clinics as an actual hospital. Overall I have very good responses and when people dont know I make sure and tell them the amount of time and money it takes to become a veterinarian. Maybe I'm surrounded by a good group of people. Perhaps because I'm more into large animals and work with producers who understand the process and importance but I seem to run into this problem less than most people.
 
I know I’m not class of 22 but I have a contribution to this conversation....

I was taking a physics class post-bac at a CC and there was a girl there and I overheard her saying that she wanted to be a vet so I was like “oh cool I have a friend!” And went up to talk to her and she said she wanted to be an equine vet and I was like “oh are you applying this cycle?” (This was like a week before VMCAS was going to open) and she says “I’ve already applied to transfer and start in the fall semester”
And I realized that she was applying to tech programs (which is awesome! Techs are great! Please do not read this as me putting down techs!). My issue lies in the fact that she was saying that she was going to school to become a veterinarian and that she didn’t seem to realize that a vet tech != vet and that tech school != vet school.
I was honestly shocked. It really bugs me when people from outside the field don’t get it, but to see this confusion from somebody actually going into this field was... upsetting.

Honestly, if you aren't in the profession or don't have a healthcare/animal background it makes sense that you wouldn't know the specifics between the positions. If someone told me law school vs paralegal vs *insert other legal jobs here* I would probably make a comment just as uneducated as the ones we get.
You know you worked hard, and you are surrounded by close friends, classmates, and family that know you've worked hard. Who cares if a random person doesn't know that? Gift them with some knowledge and continue doing your thing. 🙂

The one that annoys me is people telling me that I'm going to make bank, and not believing me when I casually mention a vet's starting salary lol.
 
Fave gloves for anatomy? (if people have preferences for this sort of thing, lol) My box ran out

I’m a fan of these. I’ve used them when working at an orthodontic office and just really liked them the best. They fit my hands better than most other gloves I’ve personally tried. They come in a box of 300 vs lots of boxes are 100
 
I guess I should note I have weirdly long fingers compared to a lot of people but my palms aren't super big. I hate the weird webbing thing that happens sometimes. I do kinda like the look of the black gloves though lol

Ok good to note! I wore mediums in the ones we bought through SAVMA or whatever but they were pretty ill fitting lol. Just weirdly baggy

I have these! I have the small size, because I have the opposite and have large palms but short fingers! They work really great, mine let me use my phone at the same time, and were super comfortable
 
Ok sweet I ordered them! 300 gloves will be my Christmas gift to myself, jk haha

I'm sorry you aren't feeling close to your class. I definitely understand your feelings of isolation. I have a small child and so do none of the mixers, and we moved here for school and left all our friends. I have found that I connect best with the kids that aren't the "cool" group and we just chat and study together. It can be hard when groups get clicky and it's harder to make friends as you get older in my opinion. I hope this semester gets better for you. Feel free to pm and keep in touch here 🙂

I don't have a lot of useful advice, but I just wanted to say that you're not alone. I relate to your feelings of isolation so much...I didn't have a problem in vet school, but internship and residency have been the hardest, most socially isolating four years of my life. I don't have much of a social life outside of work, and often I feel like the other people in my program are just so different we will never be more than close work friends. My specialty isn't one with lots of face-to-face with other specialties, so we get left out of a lot of resident activities. I get by by keeping in touch with good friends back home, but you're absolutely right it sucks to feel like an outsider when everyone else around you seems buddy-buddy. For myself, I acknowledge that part of the issue is a failure to really put myself out there and meet new people...as much as sitting at home makes me lonely, it is also more comfortable for an introvert like me than actually going out and trying to make new friends. Add in some social anxiety, moving away from home, and it's a perfect storm. Do you have hobbies outside of school that you could use to meet non-vet school friends? Maybe there are other classmates that feel the same way? Does your school take mid-year transfers? That can be a difficult change...if your school does do transfers, maybe the island students you'll meet when classes resume will be looking for friends? It's a hard situation to be in for sure, but I think it's a lot more common than people realize. If you figure it out, I'd like to hear your solutions for myself! Those of us on SDN are also here for you...it might seem crazy, but over the 5+ years I've been a member here I've gotten to enjoy my 'online vet friends'. Some of us communicate off the forum as well, and it's nice to have another group of vet-related people who can commiserate, give advice, and share animal photos. Lots of animal photos.
 
@futurevet1234 I'm sorry you're dealing with that, that's really annoying and rude that people are making comments about your financial status. 🙁 But it's definitely not too late to make friends in your class, I started off with just 2 close friends, and then 2 others started studying and hanging out with us spring semester of second year. They just sat near us in lecture and we gradually started talking more, one had a falling out with her former best friend, and the other joined the class from c/o 2019 and had nobody to talk to. There's been a lot of shuffling of friend groups in general since first year!
 
@futurevet1234 Sorry you are dealing with this. It was definately inappropriate for them to judge your financial status. Pretty much reiterating what everyone else has already said. Like everyone else has said I almost guarantee that someone else in your class feels alone, you just have to find them. Are you part of certain clubs that really interest you? I have some great friends that are in other years but it's only through clubs that I got to know them. I hope you find comfort in knowing we are here for you. idk what your schools situation is but a visit with the CVM specific counselor might be beneficial as well. Our counselors are great and some people go talk to them just to talk and not necessarily because they have a problem or sometimes they go talk to them because they do have a problem and it may or may not be related to school. It's just a thought and it might be beneficial to talk to someone. Vet school is an adjustment and I'm sure it can only be harder when dealing with this on the side. We are here for you and I hope your semester gets better 🙂
 
At least one of our classes (which starts tomorrow and is 3 hours long) hasn’t put up a schedule for the semester. So who tf knows what we’ll be doing.
 
Yeah our schedule is up but it's not the "official" schedules I guess. And one of our main courses doesn't have it's home page up!! Grrrr!! School starts in a little over a week 🙁 So not ready to leave my bf's place. But I am excited to be starting in the SA ER in 2 days!!!!!!

For those who use notability, is there a way to hide previous classes without deleting them? It’s getting a bit clustered after adding semester 2 classes.

You can make dividers. I have one for every semester.

WHY DID YOU COUNT? YOU KNOW THAT ONLY MAKES IT WORSE.

Yeah the head kinda sucks but just know the major holes for your cranial nerves and you should be good for the holes.
