Lol, well our professors offered up this one in the first CN lecture and then said “you can look online for more spicy versions.” So I just used the PG one because I liked it most of the ones they provided us. Then I later googled and was like “ooooooooooh”

We do not do that very well here. Also if you have a dog in mind we need to see photos to best advise you to get the dog.

How many animals do you have already? If you might do internship/residency, it is much easier (in my opinion) to move with fewer pets. The hurdle with housing when you've gone from two to three pets is quite steep, as my residentmate just learned. Once he started looking for a place to live after residency he was happy I talked him out of the puppy since he had enough trouble finding a place that would take his 80lb pitbull (the real challenge) and a cat.

I got a new dog earlier this year and if I think of him as a study aid, rather than a pet, I feel like it's justifiable 😀 Also we need to see pictures, please.

I can be the poo poo'er. Think of something you love to do that you barely have time to do during vet school due to studying, etc. Well now you don't have time cuz you are feeding/walking/picking up poo/ etc etc. 🤣

I can also say it's difficult purely from a time perspective. Both of my roommates have dogs and frequently have to run home during lunch so the dogs aren't up for too long, skip extracurriculars that go too late for the dogs to be in the crate that long, take the dogs to daycare on long days, etc. We also have neighbor dogs who aren't that friendly (fence fighters), so they have to be careful about when they let the dogs out as well so we don't get in trouble for city noise ordinance issues when everyone is barking at 5 AM.

If you're out of state, it also really complicates any travel plans during breaks. You either need a long to very long term petsitter during high demand seasons or to shell out extra money to travel with your pet (which does add up over time).

I also personally know a lot of people whose dogs got very sick during school (including one who paid easily $10,000+ on multiple surgeries for her puppy), so keep in mind those unexpected pet stresses/expenses can hit very hard when you're in the middle of school and have a relatively limited amount of funds and the emotional time necessary to deal with big events like that. Is it likely? No. But possible, sure, and maybe something to think about when making the decision or trying to talk yourself out of it.
 
I can jump on the party pooper bandwagon.

Maybe it's just the small population sample I know of, but I feel that a decent chunk of vet students are worse owners of dogs in particular than regular owners while they are in vet school. The time committment aspect alone is a struggle for a chunk of people. Money is also an aspect I don't think a lot of people think through. Not just emergency bills, but even general care. Dog food, monthly preventatives, travel costs (if flying), etc all add up.

I'm not saying all of vet students. But there are an easy dozen people I feel shouldn't have gotten a dog while in school because of their lifestyle/obligations that they didn't change or get rid of.

This is really going to depend on the person. Some people barely make time for anything but studying—those people definitely do not need a dog or any animal really in school. If you’re one of those people (and be honest with yourself 😉 ), do not get a dog.

If you’re someone who does prioritize life outside of Vet school, then really look at if you have the ability financially to care for a dog. Including emergency funds. It happens, and that Vet student discount really doesn’t help much (example, even with my discount and clinicians no charging what they could, I’ve spent over $500 in the last few weeks on my rabbit due to unresolving stasis).

If this is a spur of the moment decision, I would wait and really think on it. Dogs are awesome, and if I didn’t have my menagerie, I’d probably have one. But they’re a big financial and time commitment.
 
Going into school I had two dogs, and I adopted a kitten soon after school started. Cats are much easier and she didn't require 1/100th of the time that the dogs did to get them trained. I make sure that my dogs get out and exercised at least five days a week, we go for bike rides on school days and hikes over the weekend. I make time for them, but I have had to cut out other things. I used to go to the gym five days a week and now I go basically zero. But my priority is that the dogs get out and exercised. Having pets in vet school is more than possible, but they do require time and money and if you don't think you could make it work, then now may not be the best time.

Yeah I have an exam this weekend. Then anatomy next week followed by a week of hell. Have I studied? Nope. Flying by the seat of my pants the past 2 quizzes. It's fine. Everything is fine :flame:

I am so stressed. I feel really far behind and idk what to do. Last semester I feel like I had a good handle on things but our workload increased significantly. I've barely studied neuro and micro because Physio and gross are over taking everything. I've been doing ok on quizzes and such but idk how I can keep up to date with everything. Just overwhelmed!!
 
that and someone dropped out of our class today. Didn't really know her but still disheartening :/

You can do this! I can't imagine the stress you're under, but I know that you were accepted to Oregon for a reason! Take a few breaths, watch a short video of cute animals or something, light a candle. It will be okay in the end!

Work load I would say for us is about the same maybe a bit less. I am very far behind in everything. Reverting to undergrad techniques is no good, but our whole class is way relaxed this semseter and so many of us haven't even started studying for our exam in 2 days...

Also our classroom is currently a cesspool of germs. I'm pretty sure over 1/2 of our class has been sick including my 2 best friends. Just waiting for the attack of whatever plague is going around. :doctor:

I think almost everyone in our class is feeling that way right now, so you're definitely not alone. It might take some longer than normal study days to get caught up after the gross midterm, but we'll get through it! Overwhelming is the best way to describe this quarter.

I've avoided the few plagues that have gone out, thank god. I have an autoimmune disease so it can be risky business. But one I was actually treated for it, my immune system seems to handle things much better lol

:hello: Illinois does! It has caused a lot of classes to be moved around and so we have many more lectures the week of our midterm though. :lame:
Iowa State and Purdue also have school cancelled. Not sure if Ohio State has gotten their heads on straight yet, but like 3-4 hours ago my friend said they still had class :lame:

I just got a text, a call, and an email telling me "Although the University is closed, the VMC is open for business as usual. Everyone should report to work."

Makes me wonder if the people that actually need this alert got it rather than a bunch of people who graduated

MN classes are cancelled until Thursday at noon! It's been an interesting time determining when we're making up classes, watching past recorded lectures, and rescheduling labs. They also extended the class cancellation just this afternoon.
Admissions interviews start this week; so far they're still on, but we'll see if the weather makes a turn to change that...
