If you apply right away you can get a university apartment in Aggie Village or the complex west of campus. Some of these are actually pretty cheap.
There’s also a website that they will give you access to that only people associated with the vet school (I.e. students, techs, residents, etc.) can post housing ads on. That’s how I found my house, and it’s a great fit! BTW, we may be looking for one person for next year 😉
Once you accept your offer you can also join the Facebook group for your class, which I believe has already been created, and a lot of people will post housing ads there!

I assume it means provisional requirement or something like that. It probably means you haven't yet completed all of the prerequisites but have shown that you will have them completed by time of matriculation. I could be wrong though.
 
@ET0515 Pretty sure there is no on campus housing for grad students. Everyone I know in my class lives off campus. However you can live super close to campus being off campus - I am only one block away and a 15 minute walk to the AZ building (first year facilities). I urge everyone to live close enough to walk / bike / take the bus because parking on campus is almost impossible if you dont have an on-campus resident parking permit or dont want to pay hundreds of dollars a semester for a parking garage pass. Once you accept your offer, the vet school will send you a website made just for the vet students to try and find roommates and also subleases available for us. A lot of people also found a roommate on our class facebook page.

And last year there was no deposit! I’d be surprised if there was one this year.

Not sure what the letter says, but I really wouldn’t count on a scholarship since they are a rare unicorn for first years (I’ve been told). But when I got mine I got it a few hours after my offer letter via email before I accepted.

There are TONS of microbreweries/beer-specific bars throughout Fort Collins. I'm not personally a beer drinker but I know of a lot of good things from what I've heard from my friends.

Brewery with good food:
I've heard good things about Prost. Coopersmith's is good, they have good food and is in the heart of Old Town (parking can really suck in Old Town depending on the day and time of day). Black Bottle Brewery is pretty close to campus and their food isn't bad, it's a bit expensive for what you get but the sliders do taste pretty good (some can be a bit dry because they're low on the sauce). Odell's brewery and New Belgium's breweries are nice but their food options are lacking. They usually only have one food truck each day (which tastes good, ESPECIALLY when they have Taco Stop) but it's more for the beer side than the food. OH also Maxline brewing is supposed to be pretty good for the beer side (I think they do food trucks too)! and they have yard games and stuff to play if you are interested in that.

As for beer bars with good food:
I've heard WONDERFUL things about Tap and Handle, The Mayor of Old Town, and The Colorado Room.

I went to the Mayor of Old Town after my interview and was very pleased! And a bit overwhelmed by choices, they have a ridiculous amount of beer on tap

Other people have already covered breweries but I’ll give my two cents.

The Mayor has really solid food but service can sometimes be lacking.

My go to place for when I wanna go out and not spend a lot of money and still feel a little bit classy is Social during happy hour (which is all day on Tuesday’s btw). They are a 1920s prohibition / speakeasy themed bar with really creative drinks and lots of yummy small plates you can get a few of and share among you. It can be hard to find since it’s underground (the whole speakeasy thing) but I think it’s pretty cool.

My only warning about social is that the drinks are super strong (and also super good :hungry:) and can take you from 0-100 really quickly if you're not careful - if you're ever going there on a night out on the town I strongly recommend starting there rather than ending there.

Another place I like on the drink end of things is Elliot's, it's a little martini bar in Old Town that also makes very strong drinks that are very good.
 
Question for current students: Does CSU have a classroom dress code? (I'm aware that the VTH does.)

Nope!
Foundations will have a dress code occasionally (for when you are at the VTH or representing CSU at an outside organization). You'll also want long pants and closed toed shoes for lab but otherwise you can wear what you like.
 
Question! I currently go to CSU for undergrad and have taken the masters dissection. We always wore scrubs under our lab coats so we wouldn’t smell gross the rest of the day [emoji23] Do people usually wear scrubs under their coats in the vet school anatomy? I feel like changing every day for the lab would be a pain in the butt but at the same time I don’t want to smell [emoji23]

Ha. I always see you guys in a long line outside the bathroom before your lab.

No, for the most part we do not wear scrubs. Almost everyone just wears their lab coat and some rubber boots. A select few people may put on scrub pants over their normal ones but that also became less common as the semester progressed.

Maybe it’s because we’re vet students and are desensitized to it, but I haven’t ever noticed a person smelling like formalin after we are out of lab and their coat is off. For the most part people just stay on top of taking their lab coat home regularly to wash it.

There were maybe a few days when we had particularly bloody fresh specimens that I wish I had some scrub pants on but didn’t even end up getting anything on my clothes anyways.

Psst from a second year I can confirm that the first years do smell like formalin a lot lol. But I can also smell the formalin from the street from outside the building so I may just be extra sensitive. You're also right that the lab coats are usually the big formalin smell offenders, so the smell tends to get concentrated in the cubes rather than on your individual person for the most part.

I usually wore a scrub top over my shirt + plain jeans to lab during my first year, but on days with huge fresh specimens I wore a full set of scrubs with no street clothes underneath because I didn't feel like getting blood out of good clothes and I am one of those people who gets everything on myself somehow. I kept a bag with an old scrub top in it on top of my desk and it was pretty quick to just pull it on over my shirt for lab, so wasn't too much of a hassle.

I don't go to CSU, but we have a locker rooms for changing into anatomy scrubs but yes we have a saying here "You smell like a first year"-my locker definately smells like formalin. After going from doing anatomy like all week for small animal to 3 times a week for LA. I can smell it again.

My boss used to always joke that first years were the smelly kids. It's basically a rite of passage at this point

When I was looking it up myself, I found this: http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu/Documents/dvm-form-rabies.pdf

I'm not 100% sure how old this is but is says it turns out to be around $900 and can be charged to your student account. I'm not sure how the CSU insurance works though because I've always had my own personal health insurance.

Any OOS accept their seat yet? I really feel like it's the best fit for me but am struggling with their tuition. PM if you don't mind sharing your thought process of decision making!

My FAFSA for CSU hasn't go through yet because it says I have to be enrolled in a program hahah. I haven't made a decision yet so that's why I'm assuming it hasn't yet.

Can any current students speak to life as a commuter? I really love this school, but my SO hasn't been able to find any good jobs in his field in Fort Collins, and it's looking like he would be working in Denver. I have heard from people that even though it doesn't look that far on a map, the Fort Collins/Denver commute can be up to two hours each way. I have looked at random areas in the middle to live, but then we would each be facing about an hour commute each way, and I feel like we would be pretty isolated, given that we wouldn't be near Denver or any of his potential new friends, but also wouldn't be near Fort Collins and the other vet students. It makes me feel like it might be harder to study with people/be involved in things on campus if I'm that far. Does anyone on here currently commute from a ways away, and feel like they are still getting the most out of school? I really want to go here but currently feeling like a city school might be easier for us...

Any advice/anecdotes appreciated!!

Personally, I don't commute but I have a few friends that have/did commute while in undergrad. One lived in Berthoud (sort of middle of nowhere between Denver/FoCo). She seemed to make it pretty well. I'm not sure overall of her full experience. I have another friend that lives in Loveland and she commutes daily. We had Cell Biology together and she would just come up to Fort Collins to study with me or we would FaceTime to study and talk about things sometimes. She definitely makes it work but I'm not sure how much she has to personally sacrifice to live down there.

I think the biggest difference is that you are essentially REQUIRED to get a parking pass because you'll need it to get to class easiest. I think people can make the commutes doable for sure. You just have to be willing to get up earlier to beat traffic or anything along those lines. The traffic on I-25 to Denver and back can be kind of crappy but once you learn the right times to go, I think it's a bit better. I think also, once you learn other ways to drive that avoid the really terrible parts of where traffic is hitting, you can cut down your commute times.

I am a WA resident and my family home is like 45 minutes south of Seattle (when there is zero traffic). My mom currently works in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle and she makes the commute everyday and it can be up to two hours in commute for her. The traffic can be BAD but she makes it work because the job is worth it to her (i.e. related to what she got her associates in and makes good money). She got a commuter car that is good on gas (a Mini Cooper S) and spends less on gas that way. She started getting up earlier to beat the traffic as best she could.

I'm not sure if that helps you at all since it's not fully school related but it's sort of an anecdote of commuting.

Definitely check with the school before committing because some schools require you to be within 15-30 minutes during 4th year. Not sure if CSU has a requirement but definitely contact the school.
 
@dogmom44 I used to live in CO. The commute between Denver and Ft Collins is real. The traffic these days is rediculous. Rush hour is horriffic. The times you said I would say is pretty accurate. As @SkiOtter said when I interviewed last year their requirement was to be there within 20 min so even living in Loveland was pushing it and one of the tour guides currently lived there and was either going to have to move or hope classmates lent her a couch for those services-which is less ideal if you have pets. One thing about CSU as @danseth already said is parking on CSU campus is virtually nonexistent and outrageous cost wise. Idk what your other options are and if they might be better, but CSU is a pretty "city" school compared to some places. Sure it's no MN, but it's definately not WA either. Idk what your SO situation is like, I know it's not ideal but it might be worth doing LD. Even if it's just Denver/Ft. Collins LD. Alot of my classmates that are married their husbands are living in Spokane (1.5 hours away no traffic) while they're here at school in Pullman. It seems to work for them and for some, their SO is even back on the westside so like 6 hours away but they make it work as do people in relationships that are multiple states away from each other. My pm box is open if you have more questions I might be able to help with.

To add to this, my boyfriend is in the USAF and is stationed at FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne. So we do the partial LD thing too. Cheyenne is 45 minutes to an hour away which is similar to the Denver to FoCo LD. We make it work. I think it's not that bad. We see each other regularly and everything so it's not like we never see each other. It is possible to do that.

CSU requires 20 mins out during specific rotations in fourth year. I know lots of folks who crashed on a couch during specific rotations (at least the on call portion, which is really where you have to be in the timeframe) and it worked fine. I have classmates (and know of people in classes above and below me) who commute from Loveland, Cheyenne, and a few other places and all have made it work thus far

Hi commuter here!

I live in Loveland so it’s just under a half hour to school for me (I’m within 25 minutes of the hospital, less with speeding). My husband works just outside of Boulder so he commutes about an hour to work a day.

Driving from Fort Collins to Denver is about an hour and a half on a good day. It’d be a rough commute if you lived in either city. However living in the middle isn’t terrible (that’s sort of what we’re doing but a little closer to FoCo for me).

I don’t find commuting to be negative to school or social life. It does mean sometimes I don’t come back for reviews or I will stay at school longer when other people could pop home in between meetings, classes etc. It’s definitely doeable. I do have a parking pass but I didn’t during grad school and took the bus in. It adds another 20+ minutes to take the bus (if you use the Max system). Honestly I like living in a different city and getting outside of the school bubble.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I definitely have to think a little more about the being 20 minutes from campus thing, but it’s comforting to hear that people have made it work by crashing with a friend for a night or two!

I could go to MN or Penn and be in a city that my SO could work in, but my heart is really here. And he likes the idea of CO too! He works in finance though and some of the jobs he was looking at might be on New York time, so then he might be able to avoid rush hour if we works kinda weird hours for CO I think.

Does anyone know how far the bus system extends? Is it just in Fort Collins, or does it extend into the surrounding area at all? I tried to find a train or commuter rail or something but there’s doesn’t seem to be a ton of public transport...
