Cornell Applicants c/o 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got my decision letter! I might have printed it out and kissed it. Don't judge me! 😳

Congrats to everyone who has heard anything positive from a vet school! B/c any good news is awesome. 😀

Still no email here...I guess they are sending them out in batches?

Congrats to those who were accepted. It's a great school!

For those anxiously waiting, the emails are out and decision are available.

Got the letter, printing it out now! Any more calls today for anyone??

I still haven't received an email either.... Even though I know it will be a bad email, seeing as I received no phone call 🙁

Got the bad email - not really worth waiting around for 👎

Finally got my email. 🙁

I'm pretty disappointed, but not very surprised. Good luck to those who made it to the waitlist!

Congrats to all those accepted [anywhere] so far, and the rest of you keep your heads up!

I put off reading much about Cornell's vet school and summer research opportunities, etc., because I didn't want to get my hopes up, but now that I'm looking into it... 98.3% sure this is where I'll be in eight months. This whole experience is completely surreal.

Got an email and I'm an alternate. Any idea how many alternates there are, how many they usually take off the waitlist, and whether they'll tell us what place we are on the list?

I am also an alternate, so I would echo prevet's questions. I am also wondering what people think about alternates attending the Information Sessions.

The letter that I received appears to indicate that alternate candidates who have attended an information session will be more likely to receive an offer of admission (should an accepted student decline) as compared to an alternate candidate who had chosen not to attend. Obviously, though, paying for travel to Ithaca would be expensive, and it seems like a gamble without an offer of admission (though I guess you could conceptualize it as "the cost of an interview" or something).

I would very much like to attend and learn more about the school (not to mention improve my chances of admission), but I am not sure I can afford the trip, and I don't want to travel there and fall in love with the school if the chances that I will be admitted from the alternates is close to zero.

Additionally, does anyone know what the odds are that an alternate candidate would receive any funding if admitted? I have heard that Cornell is (in general) more likely to award scholarships than other veterinary schools, but it seems unlikely that an alternate candidate would be able to hope for this.

Finally, given that the decision deadline is universal, I am sure that a lot of people do chose to wait until April 15 to make their school decisions. What happens if you have already accepted elsewhere and are offered a spot as an alternate? Do you just lose your deposit if you chose to accept the new offer? Or are you unable to accept due to your acceptance of the original offer?

Sorry. Lots of questions...

Still waiting to hear back from the dual degree program (although I am guessing that is a no at this point)...I was just wondering if anyone had received any news? They said they would let us know by the end of this week.

Rejected like last year. 🙁 I'm just happy knowing I at least tried.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted!

Can anyone who was offered admission or an alternative spot give their stats?

Congrats to all who got in and all of you alternates! I am a current first year, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me (or just ask on here).

Awendela, I can try to answer some of your questions. I totally understand not having enough money to make it to Ithaca (welcome to vet school, where no one has money). I can say that the accepted students weekend was really helpful for some people who weren't sure how tutor groups (PBL) would suit them and those who wanted to talk to students/take tours. You can opt to stay with vet students for the weekend, so that would cut some costs.

I don't know stats, but I'm pretty sure our class has a whole bunch of alternates. So I certainly wouldn't write off your chances of getting in. It is true that you could not hear until much later-- I know someone in our class decided to come in June/July. You would, yes, lose your deposit at the other school. But I wouldn't worry too much about that now. After all what's a few hundred dollars in the grand scheme of vet school costs.

I'm not sure about financial aid. I know the deadline for current students is Feb 15th, so if you happened to be admitted by then, I would assume your alternate status would make little difference. But you could definitely call Student Services and ask! Their number is 607-253-3700.

For those who didn't get in, don't give up hope! We also have people in our class who got in after applying up to 5 times! Persistence pays off in the end 🙂

Thanks! Very much looking forward to checking things out in Ithaca!

For the accepted students weekend, what can we expect? Is it an all day event on Friday? Friday through Saturday? What is the dress code typically?:soexcited:

I too would like to know the answers to these questions!

And I'll add one of my own: do many people bring guests to the accepted students weekend? I'm debating bringing my husband (since he'll be moving to Ithaca with me and I think he'd like to see the area a bit) but I don't want him to have to stand around and twiddle his thumbs while we do "serious vet student stuff"

Assuming they don't change much from last year, I would expect an all day event on Friday. You'll get a bunch of presentations from admissions, researchers, faculty, etc. You'll do a mock tutor group and do a tour of the school. And then there will be a student panel for you to ask questions, etc.

They provide coffee in the morning and a lunch where you can sit down with students and faculty in your area of interest (SA, LA, exotics, research, etc) and ask questions.

Saturday was just some stuff in the morning. To be honest, I don't think I went. My (future) roommate and I used that day to tour some properties with landlords. But you definitely don't have to stress about that yet. We were over eager! Once you are added to the listserv in March, you'll receive approximately 12930812398 offers for housing from upperclassmen and people in your class. So don't do what I did and stalk craigslist 24/7-- just wait 😉

I don't remember what the exact dress code was for the weekend, but I would say if you wore business casual you wouldn't feel out of place!

To felinelvr44, definitely bring him along! I brought my mom, others brought their significant others. It's definitely great for them to see where you will spend almost every waking (or not) hour of your next 4 years!

Edit: OH and they do plan special stuff for non-vet students to do while you do your "serious vet student stuff" 🙂

Question for current Cornell students: is there an opportunity to focus on Lab Animal Medicine? I don't see it as a specific Clinical Pathway- just one block in Exotics. I'm a labrat and would prefer to do as much research-oriented vet medicine as possible, but I'm not sure how feasible that is at Cornell. Are there other programs/opportunities for Lab Animal med?

I know we have a lab animal club here that has lunch talks/activities that go out over the list-serv fairly regularly. There are probably a few distribution (read:elective) courses you could take to further explore this area of veterinary medicine. You could also consider doing an independent study/research with a professor that uses a lab animal model. As an incoming student you will be matched with an advisor/faculty member related to your area of interest who can also help direct you in the right direction.

@rdonnell: that grey cat looks awfully cute. There's probably no reason you cropped his belly out of the photo 🙄

REALLY? whoa... perks of a private school? Shower us with more goodies 😀 So can't wait to visit!!

It can be hit or miss. My advisor has been open about meeting with me/emailing when I have the occasional question. He's yet another informational resource there for when I need it (i.e. picking distribution courses). He also takes his advisees out to dinner every so often (which is not the case for anyone else I've spoken to!) Other students tell me they haven't spoken with their advisor since August when they met.

One more goody for now: $1 beers (and free snacks!) at Big Red Barn on Friday afternoons 4:30-7pm for graduate/professional students. Which reminds me I haven't gone in awhile 😳 . Whoops.

RDonnell: On significant others and dress code...

Thanks! Was just about to ask these two questions, and here are my answers already!

@rdonnell and @Bismark: thanks so much for all the information and answering my qestion! I'm super excited for the info session. And I'll definitely be dragging my husband along. Now to figure out which one to attend... take some vacation time from work... car rental.. hotel... and all that fun stuff 🙄

Has anyone withdrawn an application from another school?? And if so how did you go about doing it?

I'm doing it now. I'm writing really nice emails thanking each school and highlighting what aspects of the school I admire, and very positively stating why I have chosen to attend Cornell. I'm also mentioning any individials (Pat @ Tufts ehem) who answered a lot of questions for me et. I'm including the VMCAS number. I wanted to call too, but after getting an answering machine 10000x I think this is going to be a lot more convenient for the schools. Just paid my deposit!

Once I made my decision to attend Cornell (early March), I called each school's admissions office and spoke with them directly. Only one of them asked for it in writing (via email) so it may vary by school. Informing them of your decision this early is a good thing (reflects positively on you) and opens the door for another applicant to be considered.

FYI you probably don't need to get a hotel room if you and your husband don't mind staying with current vet students (probably on couches) for the night. Hotels are pretty expensive in the area...

Just paid my deposit!! :soexcited::clap::soexcited:

And now to inform all the other schools I applied to...

A question for the current Cornell students: What is the discount (if any) that students receive at the teaching hospital?

Thanks!

I emailed Jenn Mailey and she said there is nothing on Saturday for the information sessions, only Friday!

Excellent! Thanks for posting this.... She didn't happen to mention what time the Friday events are, did she? 😛

Hi all!

I've been lurking around here and there and mostly just trying to keep calm throughout the whole application process (not very well I should add)---but I just wanted to officially join the thread as an an accepted student for the c/o 2017! Congratulations to everyone that's been accepted and good luck to everyone thru the rest of the application cycle! :luck:

Can't wait to meet some of you at the upcoming welcome days!
😍

Hi all and congrats! I wanted to put my input in because I was an alternate last year and was anxiously waiting just as you all are I'm sure.

I would highly suggest going to an information session if you can. It really lets them know that you are serious about attending Cornell and I'm sure it has a lot to do with those who get accepted. Plus the information sessions are opportunities to ask questions and get a feel for what it would be like actually attending. If you can, I would stay with a student host...it saves you money and gives you an even better feel for living in Ithaca.

For the questions regarding time of acceptance and stats...I was accepted on April 16th (phone call)....yes the day after you must put a deposit in at an accepted school. So I did lose the $1000 at a different school even though it was less then 10 hours between placing the deposit and getting accepted to Cornell. I believe April 16th was one of the first days that alternates heard. Also, a classmate of mine got accepted off the alternate list just a few weeks before classes started.

Last year Cornell did not tell you where you were on the alternate list, how many there were, and I am not too sure how many were accepted. I was told that some years they only take a few off the alternate list and other years they've gone through and accepted all alternates...just depends on how many people choose Cornell.

As far as my stats..I know they are on the official stats from last year somewhere but overall my GPA was high, my GRE quantitative was average, and my verbal was terrible. Im also an OOS.

Feel free to PM me and Ill give you specifics if you'd like! Also feel free to PM me with other questions regarding being an alternate or just Cornell vet student questions in general! I know how stressful it is waiting around so you're welcome to pick my brain while you're waiting!

She sent out the schedule by email today. There are many events and I think they all end by 5:30

Oh really? That's odd - I never received an email regarding the schedule (and I did receive the acceptance call and email). Did you already choose a date? I haven't yet, and I'm wondering if maybe that's why I didn't receive the info yet.

Basically I'm waiting to see what Friday I can get off, and am contemplating driving in and out on the same day to save on hotel costs (it's a 3.5 hr drive - so not fun, but definitely doable)...

I'm in the same boat and did not receive the schedule. What is the last event @ 5:30?

Yes I had picked a date, so it was actually a confirmation email. The last event of the day starts at 4 and is a walking tour of all the facilities.

Same boat...trying to get a day off and deciding on staying with a student the night or driving back...only about 2 hours I think. Also, probably bringing the fiance. SO EXCITED to meet everyone!!!!

What time does the first event start? I emailed Jennifer Mailley this morning, but I haven't heard back from her yet... I'm sure this is a busy time...

Awesome! I wish I could bring my husband... sadly he can't get any of the days off. 🙁 Maybe I'll ask my mother to join me so I have company for the 7 hours of driving! She loves being included in these things!

It says registration and coffee at 9 am and then everything formally starts at 9:30! Once you sign up for an information session you will get a confirmation email telling you everything and where to stay and what hotels give discounted rates and so on...

I emailed a vet I shadowed who is a Cornell grad and ended it with P.S. GO BIG RED!!! She responded, "high above cayuga's water there's an awful smell, some say it's cayuga's water some say it's Cornell 🙂"

hehe

Hi guys!

I am a senior undergrad at Cornell, and live in an apartment that is within walking distance to the vet school. (Its about a solid 30 minute walk, in generally hideous weather, but I do it. Weaker souls can choose to take a bus too).

I'm still working out when I'm gonna be heading out to Minnesota for an interview (YAY!), but for the weekends I will be in Ithaca, you can definitely stay over at my place if you are coming in for an info session (I'll be going to one too!) I have a cat, rats, a lizard, and two roommates, none of which bite, and we have comfy couches. I'm a 21 yo female from NJ, for reference. If anyone is interested, message me and I will get back to you on when I'll be around, as soon as I know! Also, if anyone is just stressing and wants info on getting around Ithaca and Cornell I'd be happy to help too!
