Greetings future HUCM M1s and congratulations on your acceptance! Feel free to use this thread to meet your future classmates, find roommates, learn about the DC area etc. I do currently live in DC and attend Howard undergrad so any questions about the area, or the school itself are welcome!

Hello zello818! Thanks for creating this forum. So just to pick your brain, do you know of some good apartment complexes/areas to live? Looking more for a 1 bedroom apartment. Also, what are some places to absolutely avoid? Thanks....

Anyone know how to merge two threads? I started one like this the other day.

Also, woot HUCM!!

Hi! I'm from the area so I know a lot of places that would be ideal to live. There are PLENTY of options. There are nice places in DC, MD, and VA…but it depends on your budget and how close you want to be to school. What areas were you considering?

The little research I've done shows a lot of places in hyattsville and silver spring, MD. I would like to stay within 25 minutes of the school. Compared to ohio, where I would be coming from, the cost of apartments seem crazy expensive lol. So realistically ~$1,200/month is normal for a 1 bedroom in a good area? Do you know of a few complexes graduate students tend to live?

Hey, do you know how the commute is from Capitol Heights to DC? A relative of mine has a condo in capitol heights and is renting it out to me if I want it. I'm from Michigan, and have never really taken the subway or the bus(I drive everywhere). I've been to DC twice once when President Obama was elected and the second time for my interview. Thanks in advance for your time.

If anyone wants my contact info, just message me. I got an email stating the Facebook group should be up by the 30th, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not from the area either, but I've used the Metro, and it's super easy to use, and since there's a station right in Capitol Heights, I'd say it would be an easy commute. Just jump on the train and study.

There are a lot of good apartments in Hyattsville and MD ranging from about $1300 to 1600. If you're living in Hyattsville, HAVE A CAR because you'll haft take a bus to the train, then take the train to Shaw then walk. Its not the best commute, especially if ur apt is gna cost u $1300 a month. Closer to the school in areas like Pleasant Plains, Florida Ave, Mt. Vernon, Brookland, you'll find more basement apartments and condos for rent from about $1400 to around $1600 but these are hard to find and they go very quickly as a lot of people want to live in the city.

Personally, my plan is to find a roommate and share the rent and the utilities. Two bedrooms go for around the same prices ($1400-$1800) and you can usually find one where each roommate gets their own bathroom. All that rent alone is just a little too much for me at least in my first year.

As long as there's a metro nearby, commuting should be easy. There is about a 10 minute walk from the shaw metro to the Medical skl bldg so if you don't mind that then you should be fine.

Hey I saw you're thread just a few hours after I made mine lol. Sorry! I'm not sure about merging, but that would be a great idea!

Thanks. I just googled it. I don't know why I didn't do that in the beginning. lol. It's a straight shot.

You're right; I googled it. It's a real easy commute. And I am sure studying would probably be the best way to utilize that time. I was going to leave my car at home, but I think I might bring it so I can explore the surrounding states/cities.

Yeah, I'm hoping to find a roomie too. Only thing is I'm bringing my dog with me, so that might present a problem, haha.

Yea that's about the average price. Some students live in University Towers located in College Park. It's an apartment complex that houses students from University of Maryland and other local universities. Here is the link http://www.thetowersatutc.com
Their website doesn't have prices, but I'm sure you can call and ask. I have friends that lived there during undergrad a few years ago and I remember it being well over $1,000/month,not including parking. They also have shuttle busses that take you directly to campus. So although it may be quite expensive, it may be convenient especially if you don't have a car.

There are also graduate housing complexes run by Howard, but I'm not too familiar with those…..

The thing abut the UTC towers is, its very much like a dorm. You get a room, a bed, a desk, and your own bathroom but there are no single rooms and because a lot of college students live there, there are a lot of room parties on the weekends. I've been to several lol. So, I wouldn't recommend UTC, but right next door there are apt complexes like Mosaics at Metro and Post Park and a few others which offer a range of prices and floor plans. They're all walking distance to Prince George's metro station which is only a few stops away from the HU station.

The Howard Plaza Towers is I think the graduate housing you're referring to. Thats where I live now, in one of the dorm rooms in the building, but I am moving at the end of the school year. Their commercial apartments (which is what they offer to the grad students I think) are ok, from what I've heard. The rooms can fit a queen sized bed, the bathrooms are small and you'll be sharing unless you get a single. The kitchens are ok; garbage disposal, stove (4x4), fridge, limited counter space. The room may come with a desk too i'm not sure. There is a rodent problem in the building, i.e., mice and roaches. Some residents have "never seen one" while others have had to change rooms because the problem was so bad. I currently have a roach problem in my suite and its not the biggest problem I have with my room but it is one of the reasons I decided not to live there anymore. Mainly however, I've lived there long enough and I just want a change so if you can deal with the occasional mouse or roach, I would recommend the towers. Its a 5 min walk to the med bldg, 5 mins to the U st. Metro station, 10 min walk to Columbia Heights (Giant, Marshalls, DSW, Chipotle etc...).

Good luck with the housing search everyone!

Thanks for all the insight guys! Are there any parts of the surrounding areas to completely avoid? (Reasons of high crime, not safe, etc)

To be honest, nowhere you go is completely safe. Even if you're in a "safe" area, you still don't want to do things such as walk alone when it's dark. However, there aren't any places in the surrounding areas where I would say "Stay away from!!"
That being said, do crimes happen in the surrounding areas?…Yes. Is it anything to be afraid or worried about if you use common judgement?…No. Have I ever feared my life when walking on Georgia ave?…No. Would I/have I ever walked alone at night on Georgia ave?…No. Would I walk alone at night even in my own neighborhood at home where there have never been any crimes?…No.

Sorry I couldn't be more clear but I hope this helps 🙂

Does anyone know around what date classes/orientation starts for us?

Anyone else get a financial aid package? I just received an email saying mine was available. I plan to check once I get home.

Where are you deciding to live now? I don't think I could ever deal with roaches.

I'm looking for a two bedroom apt or house in the DC area or in the hyattsville or prince George's area of MD. They're priced around 1300-1800 so hopefully I can find a roommate and split my rent.

Greetings future HUCM M1s and congratulations on your acceptance! Feel free to use this thread to meet your future classmates, find roommates, learn about the DC area etc. I do currently live in DC and attend Howard undergrad so any questions about the area, or the school itself are welcome!

Hi all, just wanted to stop by and say CONGRATS to everybody and that I look forward to meeting and working with all of you (though I'm pretty sure I met/interviewed with some of you 1/28). Is there a facebook group up or in the works so that we can have a more open communicationwith everyone?

I also interviewed on 1/28 🙂

As far as a FB group, Ms. Walk said that we would get an email around March 30th notifying us when the page is up…So I'm assuming that a group has yet to be created since I haven't heard anything...

I believe Orientation begins Mid-July, with classes starting the following week...
Do you know the exact date of orientation? I live in DC, and work full-time. Just wondering when to put it my 2 weeks notice.

Does anyone have a sense of what a typical day's schedule looks like? I'm trying to figure out going to and from school in the middle of the day is feasible. Do we have unscheduled time during the day?

Last year orientation around July 17 I believe…so I'm guessing around the same date for this year...

I believe all lectures are in the morning until noon. In the afternoon there's usually either problem based learning or lab or stuff like that. Not sure how often, but from what I hear, on most days you're usually on campus through most of the afternoon, wether its for class or class-related. Hope this helps!

Yeah, that's about what I had thought. I hear that the day is usually done by early afternoon, but once anatomy lab starts, it can frequently go later.

When are we expected to get more details about orientation and what we need to have for class?

Hey guys. Newly accepted and definitely committing! Just wanted to say hi and looking forward to meeting you all. I see my interview cohort is well represented in here (Interviewed 01/28/14)!! Congrats to everyone (including those that didn't interview then)!!

Last year orientation around July 17 I believe…so I'm guessing around the same date for this year...

In the newsletter from Ms. Walk, Orientation is July 16th at 8am. First day of class is July 23rd at 9am.

What's up guys? I'm also a 1/28er. Glad to meet everyone. I am looking for a roommate if anyone is interested. Definitely not trying to tackle DC/MD rent by myself if it can be avoided. Congrats to everyone on the acceptances.

For anyone with a budget already, how much does Howard allocate to living expenses?? Trying to find an apt but don't really have a budget to go by....

Hey, quick question. What's the grading policy? Is it letter grades or fail/pass/honors?

Hey everyone!!! Just wondering if anyone has solidified housing at all? Where do most med students tend to stay??

From what I gather from the Facebook group (those who haven't joined, I highly recommend), a lot of people are living in the prince george's area at places like Post Park (thats where I'm applying), and also in the silver spring area at spots like Summit Hills. There are also people on Facebook looking for roommates etc. Good luck guys!

ALSO, here's a breakdown of the 2014/2015 estimated budget that I got from a lady in Fin Aid. for the person who was wondering about living expenses.

Do any of you know how much student parking at Howard is?

Hello all,

First, congrats on your acceptances! I am an applicant still waiting on my decision but I happened to come upon this thread. I just wanted to drop a useful link for those moving to this area (I currently live here). The Washington Post created an interactive maps of homicides that have occurred in the city between 2000-2011. That should be of a little assistance trying to decide where in DC to stay as far as safety goes. Just keep in mind it only shows homicides, not any other types of crimes, and the stats don't go beyond 2011.

http://apps.washingtonpost.com/investigative/homicides/?tid=rr_mod#171:0:0:0:0:0:0:0

Also, try this crime map as well. It shows all types of crime occurring in DC.

http://spotcrime.com/#washington, dc

Also, when looking for a place, keep in mind that DC is a MAJOR city, and has a MAJOR rush hour. A place that is 15 minutes from HU on Google Maps, could actually turn out to be an hour drive during 6am-9am and about 3:30pm-6:30pm. So with that in mind, even with a car, staying in close proximity to a metro is ideal. A good tip is to Google Map the place to HU during those times of the day. It'll show you the estimated travel time at that time, as well as how long it would normally take without heavy traffic.

Hello again all,

Just figured I'd update the forum that I got an acceptance today!!! And hopefully the information I added yesterday was helpful. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll try my best to help.
