does anyone find that the professors aren't as available to students because they are so involved in research?

Not with the profs that you spend the most time with. A lot of them spend a ton of tI'm teaching. For those few that teach a few classes, they make themselves relatively available.

Yea I’m starting to get REALLY concerned like I didn’t even get waitlisted.

I think there is no rejections at this point, only acceptance or waitlist. But very strange that we haven’t gotten out decisions

I’m just wondering why we haven’t gotten anything yet like any news.

Accepted IS! Does anyone know if the acceptance form is attached to the email or does that come in the mail with the official papers?

I imagine you'll get an official one in the mail to send in if it's not attached to the email you guys were sent.

Okay because in the email it says an attached form but nothing was attached to my email

Anyone IS accepted that has been accepted to other school(s) and still unsure of where to choose? Please DM me lol

is the atmosphere at illinois cutthroat? or are people open about sharing notes and study guides?

I think it depends on the class and even on the person. I feel my class is pretty open to helping each other. I missed 2.5 weeks of class last semester, including the midterm and a boatload of people sent me study guides and such without my asking. 2020 has a Google drive where they all put notes for each other together. I've set up a Google drive for me to put my notes in that my Little has access to and she can have her notes and her little will get access and so on. Individual friend groups are very good about helping each other hard core.

Can confirm 2020 has a "classzilla" drive. (We were an oopsie and have 154 people in my class instead of 130... thus, "classzilla") We are really good about helping each other out. Vet school can be rough. You're gonna need your people. We were actually just complimented by a faculty member yesterday for how much our class supports each other. It is also something that increases as you go through the four years. You'll always have people you don't get a long with, but at the end of the day those are your classmates and those are people you might rely on one day. No matter where you go I strongly encourage you not to burn bridges - even on your worst days.

thank you all! also i know you start clinical rotations first year but do you actually get to do hands-on stuff or do you just kind of stand back and watch the older students/faculty?

Depends on the rotation, your 4th year, and yourself. There are rotations built specifically for 1st/2nd years to start getting hands on with clinicians specifically hired to teach us as well as be doctors. That would be equine med and surg, small animal physical exam, exotic pet management, and some others. Then some of the more hardcore rotations, like internal med, really depend on the situation. I helped my 4th year out quite a bit and loved internal med. Same goes with small animal ER and WEAMS. A lot of that was me asking a ton of questions and asking to be involved. So if you politely put yourself out there during rotations, you can be an active participant within reason. I'm not going to promise you placing catheters or anything. But it's better than being a wall flower.

If I still haven’t heard anything what should I do/assume?

i'd wait until monday and give them a call if you haven't heard anything. they were having problems with the interview invites and times, so it's very likely that they're having the same issues again.

I guess if I called tomorrow no one would be there to answer being it’s a Saturday.

I tried to message you/go to your page but it doesn't allow me too. I was accepted to two schools and waitlisted at another. Definitely not going with the waitlisted school, but I'm having a really difficult time deciding. Hbu?

i'm also having trouble deciding!
Go to the cheapest school. You may think one is your “dream school” but you do NOT get any accurate view of the school just by touring. It’s not worth extra debt to go somewhere for FOUR YEARS that you think is super awesome because it may not be what you thought it was once you get there. Go for wherever is cheapest total cost of attendance with tuition/fees AND housing/cost of living.

Can you claim residency in Illinois at all when in vet school? And is there a Facebook page or anything for accepted students?

Nope. Only way to change residency is if you marry a resident who makes more than the cost of tuition or something like that.
And there will be one set up at some point in the future.

I was already a resident coming in to school so I haven't gone through the process personally, but my understanding is that it's incredibly difficult (impossible really) to become a resident while in school here unless you are married. The primary criteria for becoming a resident is that you/your household (ie spouse) need to make an income greater than your annual (OOS) tuition bill. So, if you're OOS, your best bet is having a spouse who makes ~$50k+. Otherwise it's not really going to happen unless you find the world's most generous part time job for the summer.

Oh and as for a fb page I kinda doubt anyone's made one yet, but you could feel free to start one (an unofficial page, of course) if you wanted to.
Once the school year starts your class will be given an "official" c/o 2023 page and also most likely someone will make an "unofficial" page as well for only your classmates.

Where do most students live? Do most drive?
Some people walk/bike and maybe a tiny tiny few take the bus (the bus is a little obnoxious because only one line comes to the vet school and it doesn't come more than 1-2x per hour so if you miss it or if it's running late, it can really screw things up). I'd say 90% of us drive- parking is $660/year, which is frustrating, but the convenience of having a car and being able to live slightly further away (ie lower rent) is invaluable in my opinion.
Two of the close-by places that get a lot of first year students are The Village at Colbert Park and also The Place @ 117. They're apartment complexes within 10ish minutes of the school, pet friendly, decent rent (if you have roommates especially), and do roommate matching so that can be a big plus if you want lower rent but don't know anyone to room with.
Otherwise there are a million apartment complexes nearby given it's a campus town. Also duplexes, condos, etc. Rent in Savoy (slightly south but v close) or Tolono (further south, more of a drive) is usually lower than Champaign. Urbana rents are often also less than Champaign, but certain neighborhoods in Urbana are...less desirable.
Using GoogleMaps to scope out an area is great if you can't make it down here in person, and otherwise you can post here and ask if anyone has experience with a certain landlord, etc!
