LECOM Erie Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
LECOM's a very practical choice based on their heavy emphasis and care for the student's performance on the boards and out on their rotations. A few notable things in this regard is that LECOM students routinely score higher on the NBME shelf for anatomy than the national average (something Dr. K is very proud of) and that our faculty submits more questions for the COMLEX than any other osteopathic institution in the last breakdown that I've seen. Dr. K also sits on the board review committee to select which COMLEX q to use for the board exam for that year.

As far as dress code, badging in and out, and gym hours.. it's true but it's subjective as to how negatively you wish to view it. There is a reason behind all three which the administration will tell you at one point or another if you guys matriculate as MS1s at Erie. Compared to the practical things that Erie has to offer like low tuition (even more important now that subsidized loans are being abolished), very solid preparations for rotations, flexible rotations, great board scores, three seperate learning pathways, very cheap cost of living, etc. etc. it wasn't a hard choice for me to make personally.

Best of luck on your decisions for those awaiting them.

Awesome, I was hoping I just got a grumpy student. I care more about education/good rotation hospitals/board scores then some of the stuff he was complaining about (such as dress code, badges, places to eat, and the gym hours), so I tried to take everything he was saying lightly.

I'm know I'm basically a new student at LECOM and so far I'm loving it, even with all the stress of medical school involved. I couldn't care less about the dress code. I did have to get a whole new wardrobe, but honestly the only thing clothes related that is a little annoying is when you have lecture, OPP lab, and Anatomy lab on the same day I can end up changing four times on a day like that. The badge doesn't bother me, I kept the lanyard they gave me on interview day and use that. Eating: yes, it's true - I wish I could eat in class (oh well, life goes on). It does also seem that the hours I want to use the gym they are closed, but that is because I'm more of a night person. It probably helps me stay on a more "day-time" schedule.
For me, what has helped make the most of my experience in medical school is getting to know some really awesome people. Study groups will become your new social activity  Students still take some down time to just hang out.

That is soo great to hear! The little stuff doesn't bother me (clothing, badges, eating - I go to a military academy and already have to deal with rules like those lol), but hearing that the students study together/help each other out/ and find time to go have fun together is super important to me. Thanks for all of your input! I was really excited about the school and area right up until lunch when that student was just a total downer, I am glad I got to hear another opinion! Hopefully I will hear good news back from LECOM-E in a few weeks! :xf:

i just realized that maybe bringing my dad for the tour after the interview was a baddd idea. hopefully they wont reject me or something based upon that. It was embarassing cuz no one else had brought their parents. ahhhhhhh.....at least he was there only for the tour. now i know for my other 2 interviews to entire travel alone or have them drop me off at the school. i just hope its not a big deal that he attended the tour. the rest of the time he was in the lounge. we traveled to LECOM the day before and when we asked the recpetionist shes like parents can come for the tour, so i dunno.......crap

I can tell that a little post-interview paranoia is setting in 😉
You'll be fine, it certainly is not big deal. I hope you didn't make your dad feel bad or awkward when he was just there to support you.
Good luck on your future interviews and LECOM's decision! :luck:

What do you guys know about the accelerated primary care pathway? I saw on LECOM's website that you can graduate in 3 years rather than 4 if you plan on doing primary care. That sounds really awesome.

Only go through this pathway if you are Absolutely positive you are going to do something in primary care, and NOT anything else. It's an accelerated program that emphasizes primary care so it kind of skips over some things that aren't deemed as necessary for primary care docs. Also, if you decide afterwards that you want to specialize in something else, you will owe the school for the 4th year tuition... even though you didn't attend and receive the education/instruction for the 4th year. It's in the contract for the PCSP's.

Does anyone know if LECOM-Erie uses patient simulators? Like a STAN? In order to practice some techniques (like intubation, defibrillation, etc.) that wouldn't be so ethical to perform on a healthy person.

Thanks!

Yup, they do.

I looked at this as well, it is ISP, and you miss some of the clinicals, but I'm considering it as 3 years is a year early, but I'm worried about their pass rates, and whether or not people burn out because you don't get any kind of vacation in the summer, you do years 1 & 2 in 20 months with no break...

Just scheduled myself for a Dec. 2nd interview!! I have a question for those of you who have already interviewed here: how long did the interview last? was there a tour afterwards or anything - if so, after how many hours were you completely done? My interview is at 8am and I wanted to buy bus tickets to go back the same day. There's one that leaves at 3:20pm but if there are mandatory tours at, say, 1pm, then I wouldn't be able to take that. Let me know - thanks!!!

ok guys, so i am freaking out....

how does the process work? basically, if you get an interview invite does that mean they have evaluated you on ur mcat already. heres my situation, I have already had my interview here, and they should be making a final decision on my app. my question is when making a decision do they go back to the applicant's entire file? i hope not....my entire app and interview went pretty well. its because of my mcat i am scared they might waitlist me or something. the interview i thought that went okay. noting really misfortunate or anything happened. any thoughts? cGPA: 3.76, SGPA: 3.70, AO: 3.81. 24 MCAT (6 VR, 8 BS, 10 PS)

You are fine. You were granted an interview b/c your credentials were solid enough to get you an interview in the first place. I was in the first interview group on 7/29. I also have a 24 MCAT (7 PS, 8 VR, 9 BS) but all other aspects to my application were strong and I felt the interview went well. I received an acceptance letter exactly two weeks later. So do not worry!

Not sure if this is the appropriate place for this but I'm new...

I have an interview at LECOM Seton Hill on 9/20, anyone from NYC going and want some gas money?

Are you sure you are interviewing at SH? The reason I ask is because people applying to SH (at least in all previous years) apply and interview through Erie. SH does let people come for a tour of the campus but I was not aware they started doing admissions interviews here.

You can still be wait-listed... Sorry, but they still take all considerations into play when making a decision, it isn't just on the interview... I was wait-listed at Bradenton, so it isn't 100% that you get an interview and get in...

According to everything I've read ALL interviews are at Erie even if you have a preference of Seton Hill...

Whoah they are already booking December interviews 😱 !! LECOM moves fast.

SBB2016- Nowhere in my post did I say that an interview = acceptance. Everyone knows that there are no guarantees. I was simply trying to alleviate some of the fears of 'koala' seeing that I have similar stats. Since he/she believes the interview went well then the probability of getting accepted tips the scales favorably.

thank you!

SBB2016: I know an interview does NOT guarantee an acceptance, I just wanted to see if anyne else with a similar score as mne got in.

I am still retaking my exam this friday though just to be on the safe side. lets see what happens

My email says:
Date: 09/20/2011
Location: LECOM at Seton Hill, Greensburg, PA
Arrive: 7:45 a.m.
Depart: 2:00 p.m.

Well, it is certainly possible they could be doing interviews down here, they might have changed it for this year. Truthfully, it would be better if they did. One thing I was frustrated about at the Erie interview was that I wasn't getting to see my first choice campus.

congrats! what were ur stats if you dont mind me asking? I just interviewed this past friday

Thank you both. Sure, I don't mind.
Overall 3.47, Sci 3.41, MCAT 28Q (12 PS, 10 BS, 6 VR)

:warning:This might be long (I'm gonna try to answer some of the latest questions on this thread)

@tatyana: There are many people who wrote about interview days just go look at threads written around 7/29 and 8/19 the first two interview dates.

That being said ... I interviewed on 8/19. Everything was the basically the same as the first groups except I think this time around they made us choose the pathways before doing the PBL presentation (this was an optional event and it ended around 2pm). If they do it this way again and since it's optional you don't have to stay seriously there's only one professor and name tags were by then anyways (so imo it didn't matter if you didn't go... i stayed because i was just interested in how PBL worked).
Everything ended around 1pm maybe a little before. If you have more questions PM me.
The interview itself was very non-stressful environment but I was still very nervous up until the last 30 mins then I was fine haha. In my group we were asked the standard questions and then once everyone said their part it just turned into coffee table conversation mostly between the applicants with a few remarks from the interviewers. JUST BE YOURSELF! they all know we rehearse these questions so don't make any bulls**t answers and IMO there is no shame in practicing and rehearsing.

@Mattman723: if i remember correctly the presenter during my interview day said there a few people who get interviewed at SH this year.( also on the secondary we chose our preferences for campus and i guess if you chose SH as #1 they assumed you wanted to go there instead of erie). But in any case CALL, better safe then sorry.

@koala37: honestly speaking right after the interview was over, I forgot everything I said. So I really can't comment on how MY answers of the interview went. But I guess it was fine. Both my gpa was around the low 3's, my MCAT was 25, I had pretty good EC's (that mostly started after undergrad). I'm a couple of years out of college and basically throughout that time proved to them that I never stopped going for my dream <-- corny but true.
P.S. not sure this was you but I too also had a parent, didn't affect my acceptance (maybe gave me a boost because they saw how dedicated my family was to me becoming a doctor) 🙂 .

ANyways GL to you guys.

Hey, I stayed for the PBL presentation, too. And that's what I ended up in. You, too?

Nope. LDP for me. PBL sounded like a really great way for me to learn but the only 3 exams that determine my grade kinda scared me away. I need time to adjust to new things and med school is NOT where I want to experiment. GL in PBL (btw erie campus or SH)

I see. Good luck to you as well. I'm at Erie campus.

Looking forward to meeting you! 🙂

Does anyone know when the $1500 deposit is due? I forget what they said during the interview and there was not date in my acceptance letter.

Congrats to all who have been accepted!!! I also interviewed 8/19 and have been accepted 😀 I also want to say congrats to those who are not quite there yet, but have taken or retaken the MCATS, edited (for the millionth time) their personal statement, retaken classes, etc....you, too, deserve a round of applause! Do not give up!

I just posted on the underdog thread (definitely felt like one last year and besides, it's the friendliest, most encouraging thread on SDN!). Just wanted everyone looking on this thread who considers themselves an UNDERDAWG to be able to refer to that post for my humble advice in this crazy process 🙂

Congrats!!! See you in a couple of months!

I was so excited about my interview earlier that I entered my dates all wrong. Let's try this again:

Complete: 8/31

Anyone else interviewing on 9/9 ? I am super excited ! I noticed that we are going to have a group interview. Does anyone know how many people are going to be in each group ?

I'll be there, I'm really excited. We did the group interview at Bradenton, which was kind of weird. I heard some groups get asked alot of med ethics questions, we just got asked about PBL

I'm jealous of all the 8/19ers who received their acceptance already!
One of my LORs was late so I have to wait longer for my response.
🙁

Interview Invite 12/2, clutch! sGPA 3.22, cGPA 3.38, 28M (11 BS, 10 VR, 7PS). Complete 8/16

Niiice, I got the email today, too. We might even get to experience the epic LECOM snow with 12/2 interview date.

Almost hoping not to though! Driving from Philly and not trying to flip my ride on epic ice
