The ferry runs to Port Jefferson...which is about an hour from the school. It wouldn’t be an easy commute. The ferries run hourly but can be impacted by weather. It’s also like $20 to ride and the ride is about an hour and 20 min cross sound.
You used to live in the area right ? I just feel that living in long island would be super expensive. But I also don't want to live somewhere dangerous just because its cheap. Maybe better to live on the end of long island and commute into liu for an hour and then take a ferry to New london ct back to mass. That would cut the commute off by an hour home. Ugh I never expected to have to move but im thinking this is where ill be.
Edit : apparently long island is longer than it seems and anywhere on it is like a long ass drive

I grew up on LI, yes. Brookville is a wealthy area and the surrounding areas are a bit pricey. You could live about 30 min from campus and have a more reasonable cost of living. Some of the professors mentioned doing that. They also have on campus housing.

From someone who’s lived in both LI & CT. Commuting in LI is a hassle itself because of the traffic. The ferry is also expensive and that plus gas would negate any cheaper rent you’d pay in CT vs NY. There are a lot of apartments possible. The edge of Queens isn’t a bad area to live in either, and is usually cheaper and not too far of a commute. Vet school is tough and when you have to study the commute will feel awful. My friend is in the LIU first class and she had to commute her first few weeks till she found a place and she said it was AWFUL. I’d look into getting a place with a roommate in LI or using Zillow to find a place in budget. Good luck!

Yes, the island is long and narrow so east to west it's 120 miles and really Sunrise Highway and the LIE are like bumper cars in rush hour. North to south the island isn't that wide (like 16ish miles at the widest point) but every major road will have about 47893 traffic lights. So that's a good time. Traffic is stupid on the island so you'll want to be within a reasonable distance to the school unless you look into their on-campus options.

Would it be completely out of the picture to commute from Staten Island? My grandparents live there and offered to let me stay with them which would save me soo much long-term. I don’t think it will be possible though since its about a 50 mile commute.

I'm used to commuting honestly. I did it in undergrad. An hour train ride, 20 min to train , 15 min walking to school. Plus the wait for the train in-between. 4 straight years. Wasn't that bad tbh. But I did commute to a job for a few months that was a drive of 2 hours both ways in traffic and that was brutal

that's like an hour and ten without traffic...over a bridge...(the verrazzano i think)...I'm not sure with the train situation is but that may make it more manageable...you could try it and see how it goes. I know going into the city was worse for traffic when I lived there but it's been a long time since I called LI home....if I'm right about the bridge the toll will be at least $9 a day I think.

I also have a hedgehog and they are illegal in the 5 boroughs of nyc so queens isn't an option i guess. Lol

Maybe I can find a grandparents to adopt. I'll take care of their pets and go to the store for them . And then can live in their house lol. Who has one for me to adopt. Lol

No one has to know lol I wouldn’t tell on you. But I also kept a cat and a ferret in my dorm so...
I've never lived in a dorm. I commuted in undergrad. The whole idea of living alone is terrifying to me. I am also brutally honest. Lol

Living alone is the single most glorious experience in terms of finding out who you really are because there's no one to clean for you, to cook for you or tell you to get to bed or get up and go...it's pretty enlightening. Also, I loved it lol

Well I dont live with my parents now. But im not alone as I would be elsewhere.

I heard that those that have interviewed and have not been accepted are on a "waitlist" and that once anyone accepted declines their seat, people will start to get pulled off of the "waitlist" ...but I honestly don't know what to think of that 😅

Isn't it supposed to be common courtesy to let applicants know that they are on a "waitlist?"

does anyone know if we are supposed to make the account even if we are not sure where we’re going? I definitely want to keep my place but don’t want to officially accept yet.

Question: is anyone thinking this is where they will be next year?
Me! I already accepted my spot yesterday. I am from out of town so I basically know nothing of New York. Anyone know good website/neighborhood I should be looking for housing that is not that expensive? Somewhere I won't have to sell a kidney to be able to pay the rent haha 🙂

is there any new info there?
Haven't seen anything really. But I was also on my phone so like nothing was really working anytime I pressed anything * I blame the 90s looking pc set up they have going on* anytime I tried pressing something it would direct me to choose one of my Google accounts. And if I'd did nothing would happen 🤣

I'll most likely be there to. And also out of state so have been terrified of finding a place. I was tossing and turning all night thinking how does it work. If I rent what happens in the summer? Do I have to stay there ? Can I rent for just the school year? Lol u can tell ive NEVER rented a place 🤣 but my pets are coming with me and I'm not sure dorms allow them. I also need a cheaper place but that's safe. Idk how it is in New York but here in Boston us lady's never walk around alone. Just not safe. And also like 99 percent of Boston is crimes so. I remember in undergrad walking to the train station one day ( I did that alone (unless it was really late then I'd ask someone to walk with me ) but I held some keys between my nuckles at all time ) anyways all of a sudden a news crew stops me ( and by that I mean 2 giant tall men) and starts asking me if I've heard of the girl that got attacked last night. And I was like uhh. Ummm. Uhhh... you're not making it better by approaching me now. Anyways considering I'll be moving alone , I'd like a neighborhood that I dont have to freak our over every minute 🙃

It’s so tempting because my whole family, friends and boyfriend are in New York City and it would be nice to not leave everything for four years. I have other interviews pending so we’ll see. Its a likely a top choice though
Yea that was my reason for my state school lol. But oh well. Things happen I guess. But I hope it works for you

Also I saw a current liu student say they have a group chat they made. Im sure we could do that as well once we find more people who will be going. And then hopefully some will be new Yorkers that know the area. Its tough cause idk what any town or whatever is like.

Sooo is no one rejected from the first round? Lol

Hey ya'all. I'm an instate applicant but have also not heard a single word or anything from the University yet. I was thinking of reaching out, is any one else in a similar situation?

Yes it’s a good idea we could do a facebook group or something!

I feel like you and I lived in very different Bostons...I walked around alone literally all the time. Including in Somerville after undergrad...through Cambridge and parts of Medford. I lived in JP for a time too...I’m sorry that’s the experience you had. Hopefully you’ll feel more comfortable on LI.

Cambridge and Medford aren't Boston. Boston. Boston is Dorchester, Roxbury, north end , south end, downtown, back bay , China town, misson hill, Mattapan etc. Those are full of Gangs, especially at night. My university is on the Roxbury boarder. Where all the section 8 project houses are (literally next to the campus) violence every day, shooting, assault, etc. Not all of Boston is like this. And I still do very much like it. As a kid I grew up in the suburbs near Boston which are very safe . (Medford and Cambridge are example of safe surrounding neighborhoods) most of Cambridge and Medford is working professionals and college students.

Things have also changed a lot over the years. Jp has changed drastically. From being safe to unsafe, then college students , then not so much. As a kid jp used to be better , then it went down hill for a while, now its fairly quiet . Nothing special, just a standard town.

Do it.

I attended Northeastern University for undergrad and am back there for my post-bacc. I had friends at BU and other schools in the city. I lived on campus. When I lived in Somerville it was still referred to as Slummerville. I’m not entirely removed.

I’m also probably almost twice your age so that may account for the varying interpretations.

Lol yea some of Summerville isn't that nice. But I wouldnt call it as bad as Dorchester, or Rochester. I guess it depends on how you look at it. People that grew up in the city probs wouldn't be phased by it.

You went to school right next to me actually. So you must know the projects I'm talking about. The mission hill ones. We'd get texts constantly from school about them to stay away they were smack up against our biomedical building.

I'm also a small somewhat defenseless person , that people have a tendency to approach. Like constantly. Idky.. so my experience may have been different. I also didn't live on campus so was constantly at train stations which are not exactly the safest places around.

Haha yes for sure . Like I said the statistics have changed a lot over the years. Even not long ago many neighborhoods where much better than they are now.
