Matriculating students support thread 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah I’m glad I’m not the only person feeling this way. Once orientation starts I think it will calm my nerves.

I’m moving to Miami, what about you?
Norfolk Virginia !!!!!! Water , beach , and snow in winter . Life is perfect 🙂)))))

You’re so right. I just need to remind myself that I’ve been working at this for a long time and this is the end result of all that effort.

Thank you! I’m on mobile and totally forgot that I put that down there 🤣. Once I’m moved in and have my loans come in I’ll feel much better. The upfront cost to start medical school is so much. It’s really insane how expensive the whole process is.
Yeah the application cycle itself cost me 7500 (35 apps and travel to 5 interviews). Move , apartment fees , etc is several thousand more . Crazy

Yeah I know 🙂))) I am going there tomorrow to pick up keys , and if I could wear bathing suit , I would , hahaha

As a Florida resident, I was looking forward to moving north for milder summers. Come to learn that New York city can also be sweltering this time of year :dead:

Virginia is beautiful, what an idyllic place to attend med school 😀

Just FYI it’s like 100 degrees with 100% humidity right now up here lol.
Yeah I was planning a nice 4 mile Run today , but it is already so hot , that I will have to push it till after sunset . Crazy . The humidity is really high . I grew up on water so humidity is easy for me , but majority of ppl I know are having a hard time

This reminds me my AIT in Texas in August 🙂))

Yeah, I did boot camp in Great Lakes in June. It was so friggin hot. And then I went back for dive prep in January, in it was -20 haha.

Yeah, it's a myth that the summers are milder up here. It is often 90+ degrees for at least parts of the summer, with rancid humidity levels.

It's funny how that works. The north has terribly hot summers just like everywhere else and brutally cold winters.

as someone who grew up in Russia, I can say that I am ok with cold winters, so if I had a good reason to, I would move to north (residency in Mayo? 🙂)))) ), but otherwise, East coast midline (VA, DC, MD) are pretty perfect for me. Warm summers, water warm enough to swim, snowy winters 🙂)))) lovely.

so I am driving tomorrow to Norfolk to pick up keys from the apartment, and I was planning to stuff my car with a bunch of things, to ease the big move next weekend. originally, I boxed everything up, but then I realized the flaw of my logic, - boxes are harder to carry. Instead I took every single suitcase I have and stuffed to the max. highly recommend it as a moving tactic!! this way I can just roll them, and then, when I get to the apartment, I will empty them, and bring them back to stuff again.

ok my confidence is definitely building up!!! I just ran 3 miles in 33 min (well, to be fair, I ran/walked, but I still made the time). In 100 degree sun. I am so proud of myself. hahahah. for about an hour, then my stress will increase again.

Woo! Good pace.

This. I feel slightly duped by NYC. I am trying to leave the humidity and hurricanes in the past.

I’m glad to be Arizona now and out of NYC. Everyone complains about the heat in AZ but NYC in the summer is worse with the humidity. You can stay longer in a sauna than a steam room. I’ll take dry heat any day, makes for better hair days.

Humidity is the worst. I grew up in essentially a more desert like climate, so summers and winters were bearable. Then I went off to the Northeast for a few years, and discovered that humidity made the weather more extreme. Needless to say, I'm now glad to have my dry summers and winters back.

you know it is so interesting. I think person's body adjusts to what they grew up, which becomes his/her "comfort zone". For example, I grew up on the water, and when I go to dry climates I feel like I cannot even breath. funny.

When I was in Great Lakes for dive prep, it was -20 out every day. When I got back to San Diego, it was 55 and felt so warm. Within a few months, anything less than 70 felt chilly. It’s amazing how fast the body adjusts.

I never adjusted to the ridiculous humidity in Hawaii though.

great news!!!! my depressive mood is back!!!! (after I saw my apartment, - it is TINY with a "great" view on the wall of the building across the yard). Honestly I cannot wait for medical school to start, when I will be so busy studying, I wont have time for stressing out about my personal failures. hahahah. talk about denial.

Hawaii would probably be a paradise for me, - I grew up on a peninsular, so the island is really close.

Yeah you should definitely see someone. Medical school is stressful enough. Last thing you need is to be trying to suppress depression while you’re dealing with med school. You don’t want to become one of the few people that wash out over mental health issues.

Why not try to change apartments? There’s still a few weeks until classes start and I’d say you’re definitely going to want to be comfortable during the long road ahead. Also, it’s better to figure it out now then have to move in the middle of the year! If not in the Norfolk area, the drive from Virginia Beach is not that bad assuming you don’t live right on the oceanfront.

no, its ok. Ill stick with this one. The view is non existant and it is tiny, but the kitchen is brand new, hardwood floors. It is within walking/biking distance from school, - so I don't have to drive, it is 2.5 blocks from waterfront, and there are several bars/restaurants right next to it. It is really not bad. I am sure I will grow to love it. I just had a rough day.

ok, I am REALLY worried about money. The registrar office JUST certified classes for my military benefits. I am worried that I wont get money on time, and I have no idea what I will live on.... FML....

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that has happened. Are you able to call someone to figure out around what date range the money will arrive?

I still have this recurring nightmare that my school will call and tell me it is a mistake

Something about the two weeks to start that triggered all sorts of paranoia. I keep worrying I'm going to forget to do something and they'll un-matriculate me. And then I start to question what in the H--- am I doing ?!

I am usually a super duper sleeper and have no trouble falling and staying asleep. But now I keep running on a loop of all the To Do items that can't really be done too far in advance and so they're all waiting for HR and the school districts to be ready (401K transfer, insurance transfer, kids bus sign-ups since I won't be here to help carpool, last minute birthday party to assuage mom-guilt, finish all the online training, and the list keeps going) I'm working up to the last day, which is a bit crazy, but I think it's also a good distraction (and helps with the finances).

I'm so sorry to hear 🙁 money troubles are the worst. Not sure of the extent of your uncovered expenses, but do you have a credit card or account that could be used and later paid off once you've received your funds?

Finally all settled in to my new apartment! It’s weird because I think I like this one better than my old one, but it’s not home yet :-(. Now I only have a week left with nothing to do before orientation because I was bored last week and unpacked everything within two days I can’t wait to start classes and have a routine again!

Current MS1 (just finished,,,starting MS2 now). Some advice

1. It's okay to be nervous. Everyone is. Whether they show it or not. I took 3 gap years, 3 MCATs, and worked my tail off to get in. I was a nervous wreck sitting next to students that did a BS in 2.5 years and scored 99th percentile MCAT. Don't fret
2. Anatomy isn't the end all, be all. Medical school gets tremendously easier afterward
3. Don't waste time with toxic people. There will be students gunning from day 1. "Oh. you went to <small liberal arts school?> I just graduated from Cal Tech with a triple major of BME+Comp. Sci+ Pharmacology in 3 years. My dad is also dept. chair of IM and my mom is hospital president." Don't waste time with losers like this.
4. Enjoy yourself. Believe it or not, medical school is not 24/7 studying. It may seem that way at the beginning, but as you get better with studying and time management, you will have time for your hobbies. Go to the gym, play your instrument, socialize, cook, do yoga, etc. Its all good in the end.

Any specific issues, feel free to DM me, wishing y'all baby MS1s good luck ^_^

Hey team, it's been a long time since i've been on SDN. We moved to Pittsburgh and have been going through tons to get the family settled. Good to hear everyone is doing well.

I haven't felt nervous, but also haven't really felt like a med student or really that anything has changed. I guess nothing has set in at all. I wouldn't call it impostor syndrome so much as... I don't know denial? Anyone else not feel any different yet?

Also - we have our white coat ceremony as the first event on the day before orientation. After seeing your posts, it seems to me to make way more sense to meet for some type of normal thing (orientation, classes) before having the first thing of the whole med school experience be a ceremony where no one has any idea what is going on. That may just be the army in me wanting to drill and practice things. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Good luck out there!

in my school orientation is on the 8th, classes start on 12th, and white coat on 16th. time to settle in the thought that all of this is real 🙂)))

yeah, I think I should feel different, but I do not yet. weird.... like, not different at all..... denial probably

yeah, me too... I actually went to the library... I am reading now 🙂)) hahahhaha.

Well, I've gotten my student ID badge, received my schedule for orientation week, and am getting close to wrapping up all my work projects. It's all starting to settle in that this med school thing is actually happening, so just over 10 days until my start date, I'm now scrambling to binge watch all my Netflix shows and reading books on my list.

Yesterday was last day of orientation for us, today is the community service day. Classes are starting on Monday! white coat ceremony - next Friday.... Its about to get real!!!!

I am a little nervous, but ok. The most surprising thing - I haven't felt "excited" yet. Like, I haven't felt that "butterfly in the stomach" - "oh my god" - I did it feeling. I feel nothing. NOTHING. Anyone else?

Just moved into my new apartment today. Everything is going relatively smooth so far, anxious about orientation next week 😳
Flight is at 7 am tomorrow. :bigtears:

I think a wide range of emotions is normal, from nervousness to nothing. It will soon be replaced with figuring out how best to cover the material multiple times in a short time frame, and you won’t have time to worry about your feelings much anymore.

Just know this: every the most confident looking/sounding students are a little worried that they can’t do this. Also, most medical school graduation rates are above 95% in 5 years. They WANT you to graduate and get a good match...medical students are the only “product” schools have to show for themselves.

Deep breath! If you were smart enough to get in, you’re smart enough to get through. From here on it’s about time management and work ethic...the intelligence playing field has been leveled, and now YOU are your only competition.

We don’t have our white coat ceremony until the end of first year. We have our fitting next week though. And we get all our books all at once lol. Our orientation is so long that most of us are just ready to start classes.

It is a little weird sending emails with “Navy Medical Student” in the signature though.

Also, @Moocille you need to change your status. If you started school you’re a med student now, not just an accepted one.

Guys my friend in MD school has spent the week learning about DNA replication and I’m over here in DO school doing direct myofascial releases and patient histories my first week. So DO school isn’t all that bad ‍♀️‍♀️

At my MD school, we do both of those our first week. Plus physical exams. Schools are different, but they all get you there. We're going to be doctors!

In DO school, learned OMM techniques the first week and did patient histories, as well as DNA replication, biochemistry pathways, etc.
