OOS, haven't heard anything yet.... -were those OOS rejections for interviews or did you already have the interview??
I'm so confused lol.
Those were people without interviews

Has anyone ever attended the Zoom workshops? How helpful were they and what all did they go over?

Tbh, whereas I can’t say if it’ll be helpful for this upcoming cycle, I thought it was bs lmao. It was only nice cause you could ask questions at the end, but otherwise, they basically went over pre-reqs and standards. I was IS rejected (not terribly upset tbh- first time applying to MSU and based on other IS friends who have interviewed/been accepted to MSU, it takes like two cycles to get anywhere with them) but the zoom I attended had like 10 other people in it so yeah.

MSU isn’t sure if they’ll even do individual file reviews in the future and I’m upset they’re not doing them this year because I was looking forward to it.

MSU does want your app to be VERY catered to them- like you need to talk about why your vet, animal, volunteer, etc experience was important in the boxes VMCAS gives us, and not just like what you did. They want to see the ‘why’ and growth as well as breadth.

If you have the time an availability to do it, I still would. I think it’ll help my app for them a little bit next year, but also it was whatever. The adviser who hosted the zoom said they’ll send out the powerpoint to everyone who was denied.

Sorry for the wall of text- I have mixed feelings about the zoom lmao

On a different note, good luck to those with interviews and those waiting to hear back on acceptances!

Since they had 2400 applicants, I can personally understand why they don't want to do individual file reviews.

2400 applicants

Makes me wonder if they will seek to change their criteria to curb the amount of applications they're getting (I doubt it). I don't suppose they'll decide for sure how well their new evaluation criteria will "work" until they graduate a class since it's been implemented, which I think is still a couple of years out. Either changing the criteria to reduce the numbers, or they need to think about budgeting for more employees in the admissions office - there aren't very many, I don't think. I also think they lost someone critical to that office from last year and didn't replace them, but I'm not positive. Such are the issues when you're state funded, or partially state funded.

Definitely interested to see how it plays out for future admissions cycles! And the rest of this cycle, of course, lol.

I got an email today saying that I am missing biology II course.
Well, my undergraduate did not offer the 2nd intro bio.
I took bio 1, molecular gene cell bio (bio200s), Molecular Genetics (bio 300s), animal physiology (bio 300s) and Microbiology (bio 200s at community college).

How does this not fulfill the prerequisite?
And they let me know just now and I don't even know how to fit a course in my schedule at this point.
Should I go to an office to talk about this when I go to their Interview this Friday?

Looking at their website, I assume they want another bio class with a lab. Do any of those courses you listed have a lab associated with them? The classes at Michigan State that fulfill the intro bio requirements are BS 161, 162, 171. Compare the descriptions of those classes to the classes you have taken.

I'd email them now, since you might get a response before the interview. I'd also make it clear in your email that you will be there Friday.

We had until July 1st to complete any pre-reqs last year, so you might be able to squeeze in a summer class (depending on your school's schedule).

Still haven’t heard anything... anyone else in that position??? Should I call? Checked spam and nothing.

I'd hold off on calling. They will get back to you. Calling and emailing only lengthens the process.

I emailed the office with my concern and never heard back.
Called them Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and it always goes to voicemail.
Are they having a break?

We aren't on break, but they are very busy in that office. I understand how frustrating it can be to not immediately get a response.

If it were me, I'd leave a voicemail and come for my interview with a screenshot print out of the class descriptions from the school they were taken at. That way, you can talk to someone while you are here for your interview and have descriptions they can look at to confirm/deny if they are acceptable for that pre-req. Also - I'm going to be one of the tour guides this Friday - feel free to PM me.

Definitely talk to the school to see what they say because I'm just guessing here, but I would think that the reason you don't meet prerequisites is because none of the classes you've taken are an equivalent for Intro Bio II. You took Bio I and then several upper level biology classes, but they specifically ask for Intro Bio II.

Thanks for your advice. I will PM you.

Well that is my concern. My college did not have any intro bio II. We covered all the concepts that Michigan's bio I and II cover in one class. It was a touch course. One of the few courses I got B 🙁

Is it possible to get the syllabus for the introductory biology course you took to show them that the topics covered in that course fulfills both biology I and II requirements?
My university was similar where I placed out of bio I and II due to AP credits so all it says on my transcript is 5 credits of introductory biology fulfilled and MSU was okay with this. My university also offers an accelerated one semester long introductory biology course for students who already have a more advanced knowledge of biology but don't have AP credits.

Just in case bring in syllabi of other biology courses that may fulfill this prerequisite doesn't seem to hurt maybe something like genetics or cell biology? Or really any course where it clearly shows that the prerequisite to being able to take that course is to have received a passing grade in the intro biology series?

This is just me spit balling, but I sincerely wish the best for you! Only MSU can tell you what they will and will not accept, but I hope at least you can feel more grounded and prepared to show them that you have completed the required course work.

I will do what you suggested. THANKS A LOT!!

Best of luck! If you're going to be interviewing on Friday, I'll see you there and be rooting for you!
(also congrats on your OSU acceptance 🙂 )

Would you happen to have any insight on what the hold up is for in state decisions?

I also was wondering the same thing. I’m trying my best to be patient, but a lot of deadlines are coming up like housing and dropping classes (for OOS pre-reqs), etc.

I’m not sure what the hold up is, but I do know that all the 4th years received NAVLE results yesterday. So the office may have their hands full with that.

IS students check your emails. I was waitlisted. Not gonna lie, I’m pretty upset. I have no idea how I can further improve my application. This sucks.

There is still hope! Hoping you get pulled off the WL 🙂
It's a huge accomplishment to make it this far! It just sucks that there simply is not enough seats to take in all the awesome people at once.

@Dr.DivaRed I started a private message thread for us and it said I wasn't allowed to add you to it. If you'd like to join the secret club and chat with us, would you mind taking a look at your privacy settings so we can add you? 🙂

Did you ever get a response? I received an email saying I'm deficient in biochem but I believe I have more than required..

Didn’t they say they’d be sending a post interview survey via email? Anybody who interviewed earlier this month get one yet?

I interviewed last Friday and they said they would send a post interview survey by that following Monday, but I've not received anything yet.

It's an anonymous survey so it only hurts them if they don't send it.
