Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My LoRs took 3.5 weeks to show up; granted, I submitted my secondary/letters July 1st.

MSUCOM downloads the LoRs in "batches" every once in a while from what I have heard.
Thanks for the reply. Did you submit your secondary before the LoRs showed up as received? Do you know if it matters?

Yes I submitted my secondary before my LoRs were received.

It doesn't matter. If you sent your letters in, they have them. Its up to them to download them and add them to your file.

Submit that secondary!

Hey guys,

I was wondering how long it typically takes to receive a secondary application from MSU COM? My primary application was received on August 1st and I still haven't received a secondary app yet, while all the other schools I applied to sent me one within the first few days... I'm wondering if maybe they're just backed up with loads of apps? Anyone else in the same boat?
There is NO "screen", everyone gets a secondary this year. I would call or email right away, they will take care of it for you

Was the secondary deadline really on the 1st...oh my goooooooooood

The deadline for submitting the secondary is dependent upon when an applicant receives it.

I believe the deadline for submitting is either 30 days or 60 days after receiving the secondary.
haha WingsFan we posted at the same time!

I guess its a 30 day deadline then!

I sent them an email... Damn man, Ramadan just threw me out of the loop, I'm so behind on everything.

So, I'm a nontrad student with MCAT 24, 3.49 cumulative science(UG + post bac), 3.8 graduate school (social work), 3.9 post bac science classes over 21 credits in the last 2 yrs (level 100-300s though). I have around 4k volunteer hours, and about 35k direct care hours with patients. My secondary was in before my MCAT scores came out today. I scheduled a backup MCAT for Sept 11, but honestly don't think I can do all that much better. Not sure if I should take it or not. I work full time and used up all my vacay studying for the last one, so can't really study as much as I would need to.

Just wondering if people think I still have a chance with my MCAT score as is or should I try again with a fair likelihood of doing worse. Any thoughts?

Did you all provide a short description of the organization in the organization section? I think that this is a good idea. My only concern is that they did not ask for a description of the organization on the application.

For instance, one of my volunteer jobs was basically acting as a secretary but for an organization that did a lot of community development for a low-income inner-city population.

Do you have any advice on how to best enter your volunteer experiences?

Thank you for all your help!

Don't take the MCAT is you are not ready for it. Apply to a few schools... study for January MCAT as a back up.... utilize ALL your free time if possible. Retake in January if not accepted to a medical school. Try to get a 30 minimum and you should be all set. 🙂

Considering the average is a 27 for MSUCOM, I think you have a good chance. You have substantial volunteer hours, ridiculous number of direct care hours and a good post-bacc/grad gpa. (Not sure what your undergrad gpa was before your post bacc?)

My advise would be to apply to at least 10+ DO schools and you should be granted at least one acceptance.

If you happen to not get accepted this cycle you can take a year off and take the mcat again next year. You dont have to take it in January, you can take anytime between Jan and May.

PM me if you want to talk more!

I have a 3.53cGPA, 3.4 sGPA, and a 28 (10V, 9PS, 9BS) on my MCAT. I have around 1000 clinical volunteer hours at the same hospital (not sure if that's a bad thing) and another 1000 in other extra-volunteer activities that aren't related the healthcare at all. I'm applying to MSUCOM, but what are my chances really?

I really wish I had a higher GPA but I'm not going to be able to take any additional classes this fall 🙁
Are you a Michigan resident?

Thanks but I tried calling them twice as well as meeting with them. They said basically I would just have to wait until they "received" my application. I called AACOMAS to see if there was an error and they said the school received it when it was released it, and that it was just a matter of them needing to download the file. I'm assuming they download batches of applications in waves but seriously I don't think it should really be taking this long??

You said earlier that it was marked received on Aug 1st? What do they mean by that?

AACOMAS marks school on your primary as "submitted" or "released."

When did you submit your AACOMAS primary application? Also, when did you add MSUCOM to the schools you applied to?

No, oos :/

Also, I was granted a fee waiver by AACOMAS. I checked the box on the MSUCOM secondary form for approval, but how do I submit my application then? Everything else is completed except for this submission payment. Any info would be awesome. Thanks beforehand!

well you did the right thing by calling, and yeah i bet they do them in batches, however, i am a little suprised that it is taking this long in your case....im not sure what to say other than keep checking with them every 2 or 3 days without sounding annoying haha ya know.

Oh thank God; they extended my deadline till September 1st. Now I know that they are good people!

I think you lucked out on that one. Let's hope that luck continues through to an acceptance for you!

So if I've been eligible for a fee waiver by AACOMAS, completed the MSUCOM application and checked the little box for MSUCOM to verify that fee waiver, how long before someone is able to verify that information allowing me to submit?

Many thanks for an answer! 🙂
I have no idea.. I would advise you to call them on this matter, unless someone else can weigh in that used a fee waiver

Just 3 weeks... Crossing my fingers that that's when they actually start accepting people and hoping to be on the list for day 1.
Getting accepted on Sept 4th would be a ridiculous relief to the rest of the cycle! We got this WingsFan!

I got the fee waiver about a week before even submitting my AACOMAS, then 3 weeks til I was verified and released, so MSUCOM verified my waiver the next day.

Also, I emailed all of my schools before my waiver came in and they told me AACOMAS sends them a list of approved applicants so they get a heads up.

Do you know in what order the applicants will be reviewed. I'm confused because I heard that they're not going to be ranking applicants like they did in the past. So how will they decide which applicants to review first?

Maybe in the order that the applicants had their apps complete?

Yes, order of completion.

I saw that there was an August 8 deadline for the secondary application, but I didn't take it seriously....

Now I am trying to copy and paste my essay answers into the text box on the application, but nothing is showing up.

IS IT TOO LATE TO SUBMIT THE SECONDARY??? 🙁

Everyone got a deadline of 30 days after they received the secondary invite. Someone on here missed the deadline by 1 day and called them for an extension, which I think he/she got. It would be worth a try contacting them and asking for an extension, but over a week late I think you will need to give them a better reason than not taking the deadline seriously. Good luck.

Bummer. Give them a good reason!

I'm in the same boat. I'm about to send them an email. Let's pray for an extension. I can literally get this done in a day. All the essays were pre-written. I don't know why I waited this long. AHHH!!!!

Hey guys,
I just got an email for my secondary and I have a question regarding the Letter of references. I was under the assumption that there is some sort of a form or something aside from the actual letter that also needs to be filled out but I don't see it being mentioned anywhere? So I just wanted to clarify if such a form even exists or if that needs to be filled out at a later date?

thanks for the help!

There is no special form this year, you just send them the your LORs.
