Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Same! Sounds like a cool opportunity to me.

Me too! I've heard great things about getting the MPH from several students, and a couple of recent grads who regret not doing it.

Yes, I'm thinking/hoping the 16th, 17th, or 18th

I just called admissions again. Apparently they have no idea when acceptances will start going out, but we will be notified when they do know. 🙁

Guys, check out the thread complaining about this school, funny stuff.

Just got a call from admissions. Got accepted. The lady was really nice and explained why they wanted me to go there and stuff

Haha, they just called and said that the admissions committee thought I had strong letters of rec, that they liked my amount of volunteering, and that they thought I was a very good candidate for medical school, and that they would hope that I would choose to go there. They just called like a half hour ago so I'm sure they'll be in the process of making calls all day.

Oh, and I got my secondary in around mid July, and my stats are 31MCAT/3.7gpa and around 1000 hours volunteering.

Did they change ur online status?

In state. And about the status: no, not yet. They said that they would send me and email and mail me a packet of stuff via snail mail. I'm assuming once I get an email that my status will be changed then.

Thanks, I can stop refreshing MSU link then.

Congratulations!! Hope the rest of us get some good news soon 🙂

I also got a call! Missed it, thought it was my cousin with the same area code, but didn't recognize the number and they didn't leave a message (!) so I called them and yes!! I'm at work, details in a little while!

Is it too late to submit a primary here? 3.68, 3.51, 29S OOS

So same thing the other person said, the woman was really kind and so excited to tell me. She told me why the admissions committee liked my application (strong letters of rec, "very humanistic", some unique experiences). She also said they JUST met THIS morning, so I bet they haven't gone through too many applications yet. I can't believe they didn't leave a message, I honestly thought it was my little cousin and would've called back way later if I weren't so bored at work. I had a 30 on the mcat BUT a very, very low score (<8) in one section which I believe is hurting me at most schools. I'm a nontraditional student, did a lot of interesting things after undergrad, have a year of research, and 1500+ volunteer hours.

Congrats, can we get some details?

Thanks! One of the admissions people called me (I'm guessing a secretary). She just told me a few things that the committee liked about my application (volunteering, grades etc) and then told me about how Ill receive an official email next week as well as an official acceptance packet in the mail sometime next week.

I'm in state, science GPA: 3.6, overall GPA: 3.55, didn't have to take the MCAT

No MCAT???

I was fortunate to get into an early acceptance program at MSU that waives the MCAT for MSUCOM admission if the program requirements are met :luck:[/QUOTE]

You lucky duck!

I don't think we are getting any calls today. I also think that the admission do not attend school on Fridays, so we wont hear nothing till next weel 🙁

Exciting to hear about acceptances. When did you guys submit secondaries?

I submitted my app on 7/09 and was completed on the 19th. Nothing yet. I guess they are not following a specific order.

This school seems to really value volunteering hours. If you don't have that many, then it's probably unrealistic to expect to be picked for acceptance, especially this early in the cycle.

I don't have significant volunteering experiences, and I know this school is a bit of a reach for me.

I have more than 2500 hours of volunteering, and more than 800 hours of research. Nothing yet 😀

Hi guys, I got the secondary yesterday. Is this an OOS friendly school? Thanks! Is it too late to apply now?

go for it, many ppl will withdraw their applications after getting an acceptance in a MD school

do we know at all how they are reviewing applications? Are they doing the grading/list system like previous years? Cuz it doesn't seem to be strictly based on order of completion

Congrats to everyone accepted yesterday! I was really hoping to hear from them, but there's always next week! :luck:

Just submitted my secondary today! OOS, Ohio resident. Looking for some love here.

Congrats everyone that got acceptted yesterday!

So hypothetically, if I were in-state with a cGPA of 3.3, a sGPA of 3.1, a 30 on the MCAT, and 1,500 of volunteer hours, how crap are my chances? I'd like to think working full-time at a hospital would help a little as well as some good shadowing experience and ECs, but I feel like I'm taking a shot in the dark.

What's the turn around between being completed and knowing their decision? Mine was completed today.

they weigh 1/3 of their decision on the GPA. If u got bad grade for the upper level course, you might be at a disadvantage.

How do you know that and what does the other 2/3 go to?

It's well known that MSU determines acceptances on three criteria:

Volunteerism
MCAT
GPA with a higher weight toward upper level classes. So if your lower level chem and bios are badish, your upper levels can be your saving grace.
