Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hope tomorrow is a big day for all, OOS/IS/Canadians!! phone on the hip all day!! here we go

stats? day of completion?

4.0 cGPA, 38 MCAT, completed 8/19.

I want to go to MSU because I love the school and my wife is a first year vet student at CVM. I'm still following through on my MSU CHM and U of M apps, but I'd really like to stay in EL and I can't stress enough how much I like COM.

Long time forum lurker. Just thought I would tell you all that I got accepted today and it was OOS, I am a Canadian applicant. I am so excited!

congrats! stats?

Undergrad Science GPA was around 3.7ish and Post Grad GPA was 3.9 and MCAT was 30. I don't have a ton of volunteer work but have 3+ years of clinical experience as a Kinesiologist in the physiotherapy industry. It is important to note I am a reapplicant and I did a phone interview with an advisor over the summer. She was the one that called me and she said she remembered my interview with her when they were reviewing my application today. I would highly advice doing that phone interview if you are not accepted this cycle. Hope this information helps you all.

Congrats...as an OOS are you worried about paying for the tuition?

Canadians have some scholarships that are readily available from MSUCOM as a part of a Candian initiative to promote Osteopathic Medicine in Canada. So he might have that available to help out, apparently brings down the tuition quite a bit

If you're OOS tell them that you can't go unless you get instate tuition, in a more eloquent way. They'll either tell you that you're not competitive enough for IS tuition and tell you to apply for the OOS scholarship, or they'll give you the $$$$$. It work$

almost had a heart attack cuz i got a call today while i was at work from a 517 number with the caller ID saying Mich St Univ...

was a student asking for money from alum :lame: :annoyed:

How did you get a phone interview? Can I still get one? (I am not a re-applicant, this is my first time applying to MSUCOM.)

Has a "MSUCOM Class of 2018" Facebook group gone up yet? If not, are any matriculants interested in starting one and taking on administrator duties?

I'm from the class of 2016 and I'm looking to be added to the group - please PM me.

Got the call just now...Accepted! So excited but definitely going to have to look into somehow lowering the OOS tuition (I'm from MA) as I don't think I can afford that.

I could be wrong, but I think they just mean like a phone appointment instead of going in and physically meeting with an advisor. I had a very similar interview/conversation with an advisor who told me how exactly to improve my application for this cycle also. You can go online and set it up really easily

Wow congratulations! So they're calling on Fridays too?? Getting a little spontaneous haha

I guess so! Definitely was unexpected, just happened to walk by my desk and heard it ringing in my drawer! Nice way to start the weekend.

Congrats. Do you mind sharing your stats and when you were complete? thanks

Has anyone gotten a "No Caller ID" from them? Bc I got two within a 20 minute period...

Friday calls, too! Yay! That is a good weekend. Congrats! 🙂

Showed up as "MI ST Univ" on my iphone so was not blocked or anything.

I didn't check exactly when I was complete but believe it was around 7/20'ish, I never got a complete email sorry.

GPA: 3.55, MCAT 30Q (9 PS, 10 BS, 11 V)

Don't have a ton of volunteer compared to others but I've worked as a medical assistant for 3.5 years and been team leader for about a year now which he mentioned on the phone.

I can't tell if that is a good thin because I might hear from them sooner or a bad thing because now I get to be stressed on Thursdays and Fridays. Hope it ends up being the first option.

I'm glad that they take into account clinical experience. I'm hoping that mine will help a little bit. 🙂

I hear ya! lol! 🙂

I can start a 2018 facebook page. Even if I'm not accepted this time, I'd still like to follow along because I'll reapply and would like to see how things go. MSU is my top choice. 🙂

Yayyy 👍 👍 👍 congrats!

I've heard there are a lot of scholarships for out of staters, maybe you can call and ask them about it

Got the call yesterday morning. OOS, 3.5 cGPA, 3.9 sGPA, 3.9 post bacc GPA, 34 MCAT. Complete 8/7.

The admissions officer commented on several positive aspects of my application, including my community service. I don't have tons of hours, but I have volunteered weekly for the past two years with the same organization. If you haven't racked up 1,000+ hours, don't sweat it. As long as your app demonstrates that you are committed to service, you will be fine.

Good luck to the rest of you waiting to hear something! :luck:

Or if you have a 34 MCAT. 😛

so can any accepted applicants explain to me when we have to confirm by? The email makes it seem like we don't have to do anything until December. Is this correct? I don't want to make a mistake

That's the understanding I have from the email as well. But if you care about site placement, I believe they follow placement preferences according to who had their deposit in first. I really, really want one particular site more than the others, so I put a deposit down right away. But I'm not 100% on all of it so make sure you check with them before doing anything drastic like putting down $1,050 🙂

Yes you can. You go onto the website and book a advisor phone appointment. Unfortunatly, you have to wait a few months to get an appointment booked.

How long do they normally take to review the file? Mine was just completed as of 9/30.

I have 3.7c / 3.3s / 26 MCAT and 1,800 hours. Guess not too competitive enough since everyone being accepted has 30+ so far!

I think that you have a good/great chance. Rooting for you! Yeah, and the 30+ MCAT scores are freaking me out a little bit too! 🙂

Hey guys,

I had a phone appointment with one if their counselors today.

From what she told me:

They prefer in-state students (about 85%). Also, they are hoping to review more OOS this week. As you guys all know, they love a lot of volunteer hours.

Hope this helps! Good luck this week!

Thank you! I hope I get an ii because this is definitely one of my top choices! Good luck to you took 😀D!

hoping my 30+ MCAT makes up for my low volunteer hours and GPA. The 1,000+ volunteer hours everyone has scare me way more. Unfortunately, I think that just means I have a long waiting game.

You have almost no chance of getting an ii sorry mate 😉

Lol at first I thought it was kinda mean..but I realized it was totally true..none of us have a chance of getting an ii

Haha I was hoping no one would take it as being mean, that's why I added a wink at the end lol 😛 thought it would give a good laugh

I have like the exact same stats except I was complete 7/26. So I'm assuming we're just gonna wait more for them to get to our range. I'm planning on calling in late November regardless if I don't hear by then
