Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just spoke to admissions. Just because your application was complete months ago, doesn't mean you're out of the running...esp. if you're OOS.
The lady gave me really sound advice on how to improve my application for next cycle (if I had to reapply). Very helpful! She was very detailed on the weaknesses in my application, which is good because most schools give vague answers. Really worth setting up an appointment and calling to see why you were rejected or WL. In my case I withdrew because of the OOS tuition, but I was WL at several other schools and wanted to know what some of my weaknesses in my app were.

Well, i got rejected today 🙁 It's okay though, maybe I'll get in next year 🙂
I'm sorry to hear that. Did they tell you why? I changed the one thing they told me to then was accepted. This may sound strange, but in a way you're lucky to at least know now. The first 2 times I applied I got absolutely no response-- just an email that said "the admissions process is now over". It was horribly depressing having waited until April 1st or 2nd each year only to find out nothing. Just remember, if you have trouble reaching your goal, don't change your goal-- change your action path. Good luck next year, and you can do it!

Hey @StudyShy you have really great stats..I am super surprised that you haven't been accepted yet..hopefully this is your week

You are sweet! I would love to be accepted this Thursday on 12/12/13 (my youngest daughter's first birthday *she is my evil 12/12/12 baby lol). That would be a bittersweet ending to applying to med school! I hope everyone else hears back soon with good news!

Hey guys, I officially put down my deposit yesterday and got confirmation I will be on the EL campus. I'll see some of you on January 24, and, unless I end up deferring a year, the rest of you EL (or all?) acceptees on June 11 🙂
I got confirmed for EL too! So far I know absolutely no one in this entering class since my friends are already in their 2nd or 3rd year now. I look forward to meeting you if you do start in 2014!

Many of my friends are in their 2nd or 3rd year as well -- I graduated in 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if we knew some of the same people!

How do you guys know that you are confirmed for EL? I paid my deposit a few days ago but I didn't see what campus I was confirmed for.

They'll send you an e-mail. It should also be CCed in the "Status" --> "Communication Status" section of the secondary. Mine said the following: "This email is to confirm your placement for the incoming Class of 2018. You have been placed at our East Lansing site per your request."

Remember you have to send in the graduate application and transcripts from all institutions attended in the mail to get the spot, too, I believe.

I'm from metro-Detroit (just not living there currently) so have visited Windsor/Sarnia/Forest/London many times! I expect those are considered "nearby" Canada at least 😛.

I look forward to meeting you guys (and all the others on that day)!

Haha yes I am from Windsor, I go to university in London 😛

Good to know! Glad you got some helpful, straightforward answers! By any chance, did you speak with Anne S.?
Just wondering b/c I have a phone appointment with her tomorrow just to ask some general questions and about my current credentials, and to see if there's anything specific I should aim to improve in case things don't work out here this year.

Not it was Lorie. She said my main problem was that I'm OOS. She said that was my biggest hurdle.

Lorie is great. I've talked with her multiple times... and she was extremely helpful each time. Probably the nicest/most genuine person I've ever talked to in an admissions office.

They favor IS applicants ALOT...the class is usually 80% IS and 20% OOS... so they will accept more IS applicants with slightly lower stats

I thought that they didn't look at state residence and that the IS percentage was mainly due to self selection of the school because of the high tuition rate for OOS.

And, tonight I'm preparing my shrine to Sparty. 😉

Unlike most DO schools, MSUCOM is part of a Public - State Sponsored Institution. The mission statement of the school and MSUCOM is to provide an education to individuals of Michigan and train physicians who would like to stay to serve Michigan. It is my understanding that more than 80% of their graduates are practicing in Michigan.

Yes there is a "deterrent" because of OOS tuition, but it is a stated mission to train physicians for the state. There is a significant In State bias.

When I first applied, the admission people told me that they do have a strong IS preference so at first I almost didn't apply..so glad I did...the OOS tuition is definitely something that holds most people back...I am worried about it myself too..

For some reason I thought that a lot of OOS acceptees got scholarships... but I can't find any information on that. I wonder if they allow a one-year deferral in order to move to Michigan, work, and establish residency?

When looking at some of the financial aid statistics, I noticed that the average OOS indebtedness is only around $200k, so I don't really know what's cutting down the rates.

I think they do offer some financial aid and scholarships but I don't think everyone gets it...

Yeah, who knows. Maybe OOSers would only attend if they had substantial resources to pay for some of med school... because I agree that the total tuition differences (IS is just about $150k total for tuition and OOS is about $295k 😵) is somehow not reflected in that figure.

Edit: just for fun, I tallied up the total estimated COA.
IS: $260,942
OOS: $414,487 :arghh: (and that's BEFORE any sort of interest if you have loans!)

Yeah, but if you're using their budget to calculate this you need to realize it's pretty over exaggerated (for the most part). Most of the places I'm looking at to rent are around $450-$500/month/person, with everything but electric included. Budget that out to ~$1100-$1200 for 9 weeks (summer semester) and you can see that their estimate of $1913 for the same time frame is pretty high. Just my interpretation!

Yeah, I totally agree that ~$2k/month for living expenses is pretty extravagant for a single person. Even in the middle of Boston, I'm currently living well below that (or... was before med school application season!). Of course, mileage will vary if anyone has dependents, etc. I just wanted to see exactly how ridiculous their total OOS estimated COA was. 😛

Exactly, I definitely think they're skewing the numbers high in case someone has dependents. We all went to college here, though, stretching a buck isn't foreign haha.

thanks..do we have to send in all the transcripts before the deposit deadline?

Nope, transcripts and graduation application form can be sent in anytime, but the sooner the better, to get your choice of campus.

I don't believe transcripts are required to get your site placement. I haven't sent in my final transcripts yet, but I did get my site placement shortly after sending in the graduate application form.

Very possible. I just sent them in around the same time, so I couldn't be sure, thanks for the clarification! 🙂

Are there any OOS students still planning to attend MSUCOM even if there is no way to cut down the OOS tuition?

There was a financial report linked earlier in this thread to support that rumor. Basically, IS and OOS students had nearly identical debts after medical school.

I don't remember the link, but I did download the pdf when I originally saw it, see attached.

I uploaded the file @Peterako posted about - It almost looks like most M2s can apply for residency AFTER one year of OOS tuition... but again, just a hunch from the data. I'm sure a visit/talk with admissions would be the most concrete info. I'm just waiting for that glorious phone call from (517) area code!

And to pipe in about low OOS accepted, I agree that IS students are desired due to their high probability of staying IS during residency/practice, but I learned from an adcom member (non-MSUCOM, but for a state med school) that a secondary reason why acceptances first to IS because of their likelihood to actually matriculate. In other words, an OOS applicant is more likely to be accepted to his/her IS med school and withdraw from an OOS school, therefore drawing out the admissions cycle for the adcom as well as applicants. As an OOS applicant, do I want to attend MSUCOM? Absolutely!! I've heard so many amazing things and is easily top 5, but $$ and location are a big factor for me as well.

EDIT: it doesn't look like the attachment is working. just click in the first quote to get the document...

Hmm. Not sure if you can really apply for residency after a year of OOS tuition because of the following stipulation (requiring a year of residence prior to enrollment):
  1. A person who physically resides in Michigan for 12 consecutive months without enrolling in any academic courses at any two-year or four-year degree granting institution may matriculate as an in-state student immediately thereafter.
However, these rules are really ... variable. Some even seen contradictory. For example, I might not be a resident of ANY state based on some of these MSU guidelines. I guess that's what you get when schools are allowed to set their own residency requirements.

Does anyone know how MSU verifies residency? Do they make you submit paperwork other than the Graduate Application (which just asked you to report residency)?

Thanks for checking in... so then how on earth is average OOS indebtedness only 7500 more than IS at time of graduation in 2012?? Am I reading something wrong?

If I'm remembering this correctly from the acceptance day I went to, you can apply for a decrease on your loans if you stay for a residency in MI after graduation. It might be 3 years worth of IS tuition, but it's very possible I'm remembering this incorrectly.

You'd think they would have that prominently advertised somewhere on their website so that, as (IMO) the best DO school, they could recruit great money-conscious candidates. If this is true, it's especially salient as MSUCOM has an excellent network for residencies... But who knows.

Pell Grants, maybe? I'm going to try and contact Financial Aid about that.

I feel like you're just going to have to come to the conclusion whether MSU is worth it to you by really trying to figure out what you want in the next few years. For me, absolutely. Of the two schools I have interviews with, MSU is more established, has better programs in place and more standardized curriculum (not quite sure how I feel about PBL), and it's in an area that is also good for my husband's own professional goals. I would gladly spend $320k (or whatever...) to have access to as many resources as possible to help me reach my potential as a doctor.

very anxious for tomorrow...Canadian...really hoping to hear some good news!!

Many of my friends are in their 2nd or 3rd year as well -- I graduated in 2011. I wouldn't be surprised if we knew some of the same people!
I finished my degree in 2011 too! Strangely enough I am also from the metro Detroit area.. maybe we've already met! I was wondering, though, what is the tour you were talking about in January? I don't see any open houses or tours on the MSUCOM site.

Haha -- perhaps! Though I expect the majority of Michigan college students are probably from metro-Detroit... I was referring to my official tour -- "Tour Dates" under the "Admissions Offer" tab in the portal.

Thanks! I had actually missed that tab somehow. I've toured MSUCOM before since I went to MSU for undergrad. I hope you don't think it's creepy I'm going to go on January 24th too.. lol That's actually the easiest day for me to miss work

Naw. It'll be funny for me to try and guess who the multiple SDN people are! 😛 Can you share what you think of the MSUCOM facilities? I haven't been able to see too much from their Powerpoint tour and haven't had a great response on here.
