Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how many they will accept? 3 campuses and only 18 accepted so far? :/ This school brings my blood pressure up.

They have a class size of 315+, so they will likely accept 400+ people, if not more (due to OOS students going elsewhere , and some IS people going MD. Michigan has a large number of medical schools.)

The email said the committee is meeting bimonthly, right? So we shouldn't see any acceptances on here until next week. Anyone else surprised by some of the stats in the email? Unless the people with the 3.2 gpas also have extremely high MCAT scores. Thoughts?

Tell me about it lol

I wonder how they're deciding who gets reviewed. I know last year they did it based off of viewing the apps with the highest stats first but I'm not so sure if that's the case this time around...

I called at 8am today and the lady on the phone said they are meeting today since the last time they met was 2 weeks ago...so maybe acceptances today ... unless she's wrong
You just ruined any hopes I had of having a productive day at work today.

Haha sorry! I was actually calling for a different question and was surprised when she told me they're meeting today so I was definitely not expecting to spend my day in anxiety lol

There was a delay with my LOR and so I wasn't complete until 3am this morning so I don't think there's any hope for my app to be reviewed today ...

Also got the call today!!! OOS, 3.8-4.0 sGPA/cGPA, 27-29 MCAT, extensive research.

only problem is OOS tuition 🙁 but for now, I rejoice!

Anyone think that's weird. They met last week and there were acceptance calls as well... Interesting

How do we know they met last week? Maybe they sent out acceptances last week but met the week before.

For those that got accepted today, did you guys receive an acceptance email along with the phone call? Or did an acceptance tab appear on your supplemental application page?

Accepted this afternoon. IS. LizzyM=71-72. Secondary complete in mid-July. Research experience this past summer and fairly extensive work/volunteering/involvement over the past few years. I wasn't expecting a call this early at all. To be honest, I'm still a bit in shock.

I just got a phone call so far. I haven't seen any change in my supplemental application page and still haven't received an email. When on the phone, the admissions counselor said they would be in contact again soon and that I should see a change on my secondary application page in the near future in addition to receiving some information and forms in the mail. Hope this helps!

That helps thank you! Congrats on your acceptance! I also got accepted today but was so overwhelmed with excitement that I missed some of what she said haha so I was just making sure I didn't miss anything important

Thanks! You too! That phone call is a bit of a blur to me too. I'm hoping to see the changes soon, or else we both missed something important in our excitement . . .

Congratulations, guys! If all is the same as last year, the call is just a formality and doesn't tell you anything too important. You should get an email within a few days and a packet in the mail in the not too distant future.

Congratulations to everone who has gotten acceptances! Does anyone know when they will let those who've been rejected know or will the just leave the rejectees hanging until April???

Maybe this year they're going by order of receiving complete applications, rather than sorting by stats. Congrats to everyone who has already been accepted!

I'm debating if I should wait until my new MCAT comes out before applying.

Seems like they are going through higher stats first.

You'd think so right? But then when you look at the stats of the accepted applicants in the email update, there are some people with lower end stats being accepted.

Those people are probably outstanding in other ways, I would guess. Either publications, well connected, or something. Or possibly MSU undergrads?

Either way, it's really annoying to submit secondary very early along with being complete early as well to be placed under better apps.

I submitted my secondary 10 days before it was due (9/8) but I am still waiting on a couple LoRs from professors. I know you can still submit LoRs after the due date but will it look bad that they're coming in after?

Just got accepted today. OOS (NJ) 3.56 cGPA, 3.5 sGPA, 31 MCAT applying to the DO-PhD program with 3 years research experience. Previously interviewed with the program director.

When were you guys complete? Stats (if you don't mind)? And the big question: IS or OOS?

When were you guys complete?

My secondary was complete on 8/12 and they called yesterday so it was just about a month for the entire process.
Sorry forgot to add this, I'm in state with a 28 MCAT, 3.71 cGPA, and 3.56 sGPA. Strong letters and 1000+ volunteer hrs. The two branch campuses at DMC and Macomb are my top choices since thats where I'm from so maybe that played a large role in their decision as well.

Got the email and updated webpage about 24 hours after the call. My mailing address is back home, not at school, so now to wait for a call from my mom.

Does anyone know if we have to make any decisions prior to the December 5th deadline? MSU-COM is near the top of my list, but I want to see how I do at other schools before putting down a $1000 non-refundable deposit. I also don't want to miss an important deadline and accidentally give up my seat in the class.

Was there a place on the app where you mentioned you wanted to be at the DMC and Macomb campuses? I mentioned that in the essays but I don't remember anywhere else on the app where I could mention it...

There's a place on the acceptance offer page to select your first, second, and third choices, but I don't recall anything being on the secondary as far as campus requests.

There wasn't any specific area for it but I included it in my Additional Information section

I would give anything to be accepted here 🙁 I really hope it's in the cards for all us waiting anxiously here on SDN

Typically rejections do not go out until April. It really sucks because they make you hold out hope for that long

Last cycle I was informed in early December. They send out a bunch of emails before the seat deposit deadline IIRC.

so the committee will not meet this thursday then?

This was posted on MSUCOM's facebook. So in the rare event you do get an interview...

Testing the multiple mini-interview
The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) in East Lansing will pilot the MMI format in October, when the school interviews candidates for fall 2015 admission.

“The MMI has a lot more research behind it regarding its effectiveness than does the traditional interview,” says Katherine Ruger, MSUCOM’s director of admissions.

The multiple, module-based situations have been shown to provide a more complete picture of a candidate’s character, Ruger notes.

“By placing the applicant in a succession of scenarios, we’ll be able to test things like a student’s resilience, emotional intelligence and a team approach that we can’t necessarily appropriately test in the traditional interview process,” she says.

If they're starting MMI type interviews for the 2015 entering class, as it says in the article, how does that make sense if some people were already admitted without an interview this cycle?

they're just doing a test pilot
