Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you mind sharing where you got that information? I know 4 people were accepted prior to last week's acceptance (according to the email) but I haven't seen any other Canadian acceptance (at least here on SDN). Thanks!
A friend from BC, and they have a few friends accepted as well. This was just a few days ago on Thurs.

Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully there are some more seats left for the Canadians..

Canadian citizen here, got accepted on friday. How is everybody planning on dealing with the loans by the way? This questions is mostly for all the OOS and Canucks.

I just logged onto the secondary application website and noticed that there is a "Shadowing" tab I did not complete. I'm not sure whether I just omitted it or the tab wasn't there to begin with, but I cannot make any changes now. Does anyone have similar issue? Should I email admissions about it?

What is this nonsense? Same thing for me, the tab is there and incomplete, but was not before. I am going to email admissions.

Same for me, I don't want to bombard them though so if you guys hear back can you let me know what they say? Then I'll call them if I need to.

This is a little embarrassing, but I'm not sure I have the correct link to check my application status. The one in the email I have doesn't work. If everyone's using the same link, could someone tell me what is? I can email admissions but figured I'd start here.

They said: "As your file is complete we are not able to reopen this. You can however upload the information to the Additional Documents section"

And then, when I went into my application again to upload said additional documents, I was suddenly able to edit my previously submitted secondary. I think I'll call.

I used the link they provided to invite me to complete the secondary.

Thanks! That worked, and now I see that I'm in the same boat as everyone with an incomplete "shadowing" section. Weird.
When you opened it the tab, were you able to edit it?

When you opened it the tab, were you able to edit it?

Nope. It was a single question with two options, neither of which I could choose. Interestingly, on the Status page it still says my application is complete.

I am quite certain that that was not there when I completed my secondary back in June.

I called and they gave me an extension until Sunday. They said this wouldn't affect my admission process/time. I also realized what they did is moved the "Any DO experience" they asked in another part of the application to this shadowing tab so now it includes all clinical exposure.

I wonder what would have happened if we didn't catch the glitch? Would they have perceived my application as incomplete? Do any of the already-accepted folks have this same spontaneously-appearing-shadowing-tab problem?

I got the shadowing section as well. The Personal Profile section still has a box you can check for "shadowed, volunteered, and/or worked with DO(s)". So do we need to complete this via an update letter?

Hi all,

I had the issue with the shadowing from Monday. After I submitted my secondary application last week, I realized that there was no option to include shadowing experiences on the secondary so I called them Monday and they told me that I should see a "shadowing tab" in my application, which I did not. Yesterday the tab appeared on my application but I was not able to add anything to it. Today the admissions office told me that I can upload a document with the shadowing information to my application, which I did. Maybe this would be the best option for the rest of you.

I did notice that there is a "list any medically-related shadowing or clinical experiences in the spaces below" section in the personal tab, but I was under the impression that this was only for D.O. related activities.

I hope I can help in any way if you have questions.

I feel like this tab popped up for a lot of us recently. I see it on my application also now. I might just call their admissions to confirm and let everyone know what they say, unless others have advice already but I will probably go ahead and upload a document to my application. Kinda ridiculous that this is happening to applications now. Those that were accepted already: Did you have this thing pop up on your application with a red flag next to it?

Accepted student here, just checked my app and I also have the mysterious shadowing tab with little red exclamation point. I wouldn't worry too much about it since it clearly did NOT exist when we all filled out our apps earlier this summer/fall!

Thank you for your email. You add can your shadowing experience to a document and upload this document to your secondary application.

This is what I got after emailing the admissions. I guess for those still waiting on the decisions it may be a good idea to upload a document for the shadowing experience.

At the very bottom of the personal profile of the application, it tells you to "Please list any medically-related shadowing or clinical experiences in the spaces below." This phantom tab has the question "Do you have any medically-related shadowing or clinical experiences?"

I don't believe an update document would be necessary in the case that you've already filled out the section in the personal profile.

That is a great question. Thanks for asking as I was wondering the exact same thing. I know we get 20k off OOS tuition, but are we allowed to apply for anymore OOS scholarships?
I am dubious about paying off a CAN$500 000 debt that I prob wont be able to return till I am 40-45 yrs old. MSUCOM is my #1 MD/DO medical school, but it's hard to justify the tuition costs. I'll prob still go, cuz i love the school too much haha, will be one of those 40 yr olds living with a student debt

Likely wont be 500k, but depends on your standards through med.

What do you mean you get 20k off OOS

I am applying to the DO/PhD program. My impression was that if you go through the initial screening (interview) by Dr. McCormick and if you are recommended to apply to the graduate program then you will most likely be accepted into the medical school. Is anyone else applying to the DO/PhD program? There doesn't seem to be much talk about that here.

I'm applying! Albeit very late....

Ok heres what I have come up with so far: The US military will not give the HPSP scholarship to canadian citizens. the Canadian forces will not offer you a scholarship either if you are attending an american school (im not 100 on this one, if somebody hears anything to the contrary please let me know). So basically we are left to secure canadian loans. Good news? Our banks have much lower prime rates than american banks (about 3% interest). Bad news? We might have to use the bank loans to buy american money before we even can pay tuition. Im sure there are other avenues i havnt explored when it comes to transferring canadian cash to american dollars, but i could see it being an expensive barrier.

This is a school I want to be at. The money thing has got me freaked out tho. Even with the 20000 scholarship, 62000/ year is a hefty price to pay. But i relaxed a little when I considered the Dentists who are applying from my class. Their schools average 60k to 80k and they just have to suck it up.

If anybody else has info on this topic please post. Im planning on getting in touch with current canadians at msu to see how they did things

Bank loan and saved funds. As well as provincial loans depending on province can be an extra 10k per year.MSU is definitely worth the price for Canadians, especially after the scholarship.

Congrats to the other Canadians so far! Alot of strong applicants this year especially 🙂

Just checked the secondary and I also have the shadowing tab now. I can't edit it as my application is complete. I'm a bit frustrated with this honestly and am hoping this isn't some additional requirement :/

Hey guys,

The shadowing experience situation is not really that bad. All you need to do is add a document (microsoft word) explaining any shadowing experiences. These descriptions can be taken from your primary application word-for-word. I added mine to the "upload files" tab under "other." It was not that bad. They insured me that this document will not be overlooked by the admissions committee.

I hope this helps...

Don't mean to sound like a broken record, but is it important if we do? There was already a question asking about shadowing and list all the doctors+description.

just an observation but the question previously was DOs, the shadowing tab is general shadowing/clinical experience

But when I opened up the shadowing tab, all my info from that personal profile for shadowing was copied over. But I also haven't submitted yet...

Hi Shinobiz11,

That is a good question. I am not sure if you need the document if you already had the shadowing stuff in the personal profile section. But as was mentioned, I was under the impression that it was asking for DO-specific experiences when I completed my application and that's why I did not include all my shadowing experiences in this section. To put your mind at ease, I would send the admissions office a quick email.

For the shadowing update letter, should we have dates and hours or just who we shadowed & specialty?
The shadowing tab asks for Date/Physician Name/Location/Summary. So I assume that is all they are looking for.

One of the people I shadowed was my uncle and I got to shadow while he was a resident and while he's currently an attending. This has ranged from May 2010 - Jan 2014. Do you think I need exact dates or can I put that as my range?

Should we just include shadowing experience or any clinical experience (work, volunteer, research, or otherwise).

I just tried to upload my shadowing twice (once as an "Update Letter" and once as "Other") and both times it converted my .docx to a .pdf that I'm not able to open. Should I convert the file to a .pdf myself and upload it or should I call/email MSUCOM?

I always submitted my updates in .pdf format and had no issues. It's a safer bet to send a .pdf, as .doc/.docx formatting can get screwy depending on compatibility.

I just converted it to a pdf and uploaded it and it opens fine now. But I uploaded an update letter last month as a .docx which didn't get converted and it opened just fine. So maybe they just implemented this online conversion to .pdf?

Just an update on those shadowing tabs etc. There is a section for DO shadowing on the Personal Profile. But the Shadowing Tab asks for shadowing in generally. Now I just updated my Shadowing tab with MDs I shadowed but it automatically synced it on my Personal Profile under the DO only section. Anyone else having this glitch? I'll see if I can call them and ask what they want.

is the log in page not working for anyone else? Keeps giving me an error when I click the link to go to my secondary...

EDIT: Jk, it's working now

Received a wait list email today. Does anyone know if MSUCOM still does preferred wait list on top of the regular wait list?

When were you complete and are you IS/OOS/Canadian? Stats?

I called today about the phantom shadowing tab issue, and like many others have said, I was told to upload a one page pdf summary of my shadowing experiences. I haven't uploaded it yet, but the phantom tab has disappeared and everything looks complete again. Anyone else in this situation? Should we just upload our summaries anyway?

I called them today and they told me not to worry about the shadowing tab and that my application was still complete. Weird how everyone is talking about uploading docs. I included both MD and DO in my shadowing.
I did this as well on the shadowing tab where it asks shadowing in general. Now it shows up on my personal profile both MD and DO when it only asks for DO since those two pages sync. The school knows about that issue and said I would be okay and to submit how it was.
