Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You really should have an answer for this - most schools will have a question along these same lines, and you will have to prove in your interviews as well. They don't just care about why you WANT to be a doctor - they want to know why you SHOULD be a doctor, why you would be an EXCELLENT doctor, what qualities of yours are unique and interesting.

Think about the qualities of yours that would make you a fantastic doctor and give them examples from your past where you have used these qualities in certain situations, and discuss how these qualities of yours would make you a good addition to the entering medical school class.

no, friend. I asked "why pick us".

not "why should we pick you?"

thank you for the response, though.

Sorry 🙁 Deleted my post. I thought you meant the why should they pick us question... not why we should pick them. Silly wording.

Do you guys have any suggestions regarding what to write for "Why pick us?"

I'm struggling to find anything useful/interesting to write about.

Look into special programs offered to students. Almost all of my answers to that question involve community service and volunteer programs at the school. I'm actually very interested in service though, so it's easy for me to write about them and relate them to my current/past experiences.

+1 excellent answer 😀

Can someone tell me if the 1,500 character limits on secondary essay responses include spaces? Thanks.

Complete! Now comes the waiting game :xf:

When did you send your stuff in? I submitted everything on 6/30 and they still haven't marked my LORs as received.. CCOM has though.

For some reason AZCOM took longer to upload the letters. It took CCOM 3 days after I submitted my secondary but it took AZCOM over a week after I submitted their secondary.

It all happened a lot faster than CCOM (at least for me). I got the secondary on the 10th and submitted everything the same day. I was complete at last night. CCOM took 1 week to get everything complete.

CCOM was like 2-3 days faster than AZCOM for my app to get complete. I love'm both.

AZCOM still isn't complete. I might have interfolio resend my stuff.

Submitted! Just waiting for my school to send the letters and I should be complete.

Can anyone elaborate on the "early clinical simulated experiences" mentioned on the website? I know some schools hire actors to play patients that present in a variety of interesting moods. I was planning on mentioning something about this in my "why AZCOM" essay but I would like to know more first.

Thanks in advance.

AZCOM is also one of those schools (granted, that's mostly during MS2). During MS1 you'll do stuff like learn to draw blood, give injections, perform a comprehensive physical, etc.

I have not received the secondary yet (canadian). should I be concerned?

If you haven't checked the portal, I'd check there. If you have and it isn't, I'd wait a bit longer. I think AZCOM tends to send out secondaries like they're going out of style, barring you don't have a 2.0gpa or an 11 MCAT.

Just got the secondary! 24O 3.66 gpa. What do you guys think? I studying for the mcat again, with average of about 29. I want to stay early applicant but wont take mcat until end of august. What do you think my cchances are? I have good ecs and DO letter.

I was finally verified late last week and a little bit ago I just received the AZCOM secondary.

Time to re-work that CV!

There was a rumor going around that nobody with less than a 27 got accepted last year. However, I do believe we found somebody who got in with a 26. Not sure of your chances but its worth a shot I guess!

I'm currently a third-year student and am more than happy to help out with any questions you have regarding AZCOM.

Also, as this thread will likely expand significantly with time, I'll point out that many times the question(s) you want answered have also been asked by previous posters and you can oftentimes find the information you need by using the thread-specific search function which can be found in the toolbar directly beneath the page number listing for this thread.

Don't let the process drive you too insane, at least fake an effort not to ask questions that were literally answered a few posts earlier, and best of luck. 👍

Also, I've attached the 2000 - 2011 match data for AZCOM.

Since you offered, I will be visiting the school next Friday, and was wondering if you could give me some tips during the tour in what to see and what to do and what to pay attention to.

Thank you

Anyone know where and how you are suppose to submit LOR to them? I got the secondary invite, but in their secondary application page, there is no mention of LOR

I sent mine electronically via Interfolio.

The grass. See how much of it there is, how well-maintained it is, how beautiful it is, then remind yourself that you're standing in the middle of a *bleeping* desert and that the school frivolously spends a ton of money on it in terms of supplies, water, and labor.

Other than that, if the tour they give you is anything like the one they gave when I interviewed, it's mostly a waste of your time as labs will be closed and the temp will be in the triple-digits. If, by chance, it's a self-guided tour, don't expect to see anything except the outside of buildings.

As far as stuff to do in the area is concerned, it all depends on what you're looking to do.

Don't let anyone troll you with discouragement, my friend (and postbacc cohort) was accepted with a 24 (do not recall his writing sample score).
So, yup. There you go. I believe he starts in a few weeks.

Wasnt trolling bro. Just going on what we had gathered on sdn from the previous cycle so.......

Nope, like I more-or-less said in last year's thread, the person in admissions last year was painfully mistaken. 2014's class average was 27.x, 2015's was 28.x, and unless AZCOM suddenly became the Harvard of the Southwest, the average for 2016 will still be 28.x, which realistically r/o the ability not to accept any students with an MCAT <27.

Hey all,

I just scheduled my phone interview with AZCOM's Master of Arts in Biomedical Sciences program for next week. Does anyone know about this program? How hard is it to maintain a 3.0? What is the link rate for DO program acceptance, not just interview?

Kinda confused about what is going on here. Am I a minority or majority in not hearing a single peep from this school. I did not apply to CCOM, I don't think I should be getting screened, 3.34s 3.56c 29mcat. AZCOM one of my top choices

I'm with you. I have not received anything either. when I called, I was told to wait until I receive something telling me to fill out a secondary...although I guess other people have gotten different answers

Talk to admissions. Most of us just received secondaries through our already existing MWU portal from CCOM. Someone posted earlier that they talked to admissions and they said something about a glitch in the email system. No on here will really know what's going on with your app though, only admissions tell you that for sure.

Check the portal (if you don't have an account yet, create one). Ever since I've been following AZCOM's admissions process (so three years now), they've never once consistently sent out emails for any stage of applications and the portal is your first and best source of positive info (secondary available, interview invite, acceptance).

So I don't know how to access the portal, I probably need a link from the email. Thanks for the suggestions, I am calling admissions first thing Monday morning and will report back here.

So it says my application is complete, but it also says my LORs are "expected". They were delivered by AACOMAS on 7/5.

Just an FYI for people who follow this thread religiously, I've updated my first post on Page 1 so that it includes information that should answer the vast majority of the FAQs for the various stages of the cycle which I've seen over the past few years. As I remember more things or more things seem to keep coming up again and again, I'll add to it.

Best of luck with your various apps/secondaries and may the Force be with you. 👍

Hi everyone,

Been following this blog and decided to post for the first time.. I just graduated from MWU Chicago in May with a Masters of Arts in Biomedical Sciences, so if anyone is looking to do or questions about that PM me and Ill give you details.

Would it be a bad idea to recycle my CCOM essays for AZCOM?

No - I feel a lot of people do that exact thing. Just make sure you change the appropriate things for the separate campuses. They are 2 separate admissions committees so I really don't think you'd have anything to worry about.

I'm pretty sure everyone who applied to both has done exactly that. Just change a couple school-specific things.
Cool thanks. I was wondering if it mattered other than changing the name of the school because, I talked about the curriculum and specific courses for CCOM- and that would be the same for both campuses.

Also, does anyone know if they accept LORs sent electronically by interfolio?
