Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would love to read what aspects of this school, if any, you guys (the current students) actually like about AZCOM ?

The pre-clinical faculty are great and are very dedicated to teaching. They really do have an open-door policy.

Attendance, for the most part, isn't mandatory.

It's not Kirksville.

I've generally had great preceptors so far, even in rotations I've not looked forward to.

Summer break after MS1 was nice.

The school does try to help out struggling students because it looks good for the school and helps the bottom line.

The school gives time off to study for boards.

There are a lot of other positive aspects (such as the inclusivity and volunteerism here) that could be talked about, but they're not applicable to my own outlook/pros regarding the school.

They said that our portals should change by thursday night and if it didnt, to call admissions on friday morning to find out.

They told us that the committee is meeting on Thursday night and that the portals will possibly be updated Thursday evening, more likely Friday morning. If it's not updated Thursday night, I probably won't be able to sleep that night. It's getting close and I'm starting to get nervous. This is my dream school, and so far it's my only interview (I have one more in November.) Let's all have a collective fingers crossing!

As far as the controversies regarding this school that have come up on this thread, well, I don't know the school any better than what I was able to get out of interview day, but I am loving this school! The pre-clinical faculty I met were awesome (and the students said awesome things about their professors overall.) The campus is beautiful, the students all seemed really happy. I did talk to one fourth year who experienced some drama with getting his rotations set up, but he was happy overall and obviously very impressed with the school.

On a lighter note, for those like Zoner, how do you like this Avatar? Better? LoL

Was someone complaining about your old avatar? Did it make them think you were a girl? What the heck is this new avatar? What is this thermometer you speak of? Do I ask too many questions?

That's good to know. Do you know if they do campus tours? I'm thinking of visiting AZCOM when I go for my SOMA interview.

Officially, they don't as far as I know. You can probably manage to get on campus and wander around though.

I took a campus about a year and a half ago. It was one on one with me and an admissions counselor. It was nice, but classes were off for vacation when I went, so the campus seemed kind of stale and dead. When I went for my interview it was full of students and really impressive overall.

Edit: I just looked at your MDapps. Your stats are very comparable to mine, I'm sorry to hear you didn't get an interview yet. Keep on hoping though, they interview a lot of people and accept a lot of those who interview.

I experienced the same. After reading some of the posts on here, I wasn't expecting much from this school. But after my interview day, I was very impressed with what I saw.

Thanks. I do have interviews at two of my top choices, so I'm feeling pretty positive at this point. Still would be interested to take a look at Midwestern, though! Good luck to you getting in!

+1 for the supportive faculty. Regardless of the motives, AZCOM wants you to graduate, so they will seemingly do anything they can to get you there. Not sure that is unique to AZCOM though.

One other in my mind is that this is a graduate school only. There are no undergrads floating around (though some of the programs are rife with students fresh out of undergrad).
Maybe it isn't that big of a deal, but I feel it gives the campus a much more focused vibe than if we were a part of a larger undergrad institution.

I realized after I posted that it was actually in the Western U thread that so many people said they were irritated by the lady's expression. This new avatar is of a dude I call Tool McGee, a redneck eyewitness to some crime. I stumbled upon his mug and thought he looked pretty funny. I try to be funny. I sometimes fail...epically.

The thermometer? Zoner is from Barstow. I gathered he'd been to Baker, CA, yes (*glances at Zoner*)? It's a thermometer located off of the freeway in Baker attached to the Bun Boy motel. It measures the current temperature in Death Valley and displays it in real-time. It's a wee bit famous...ish, especially among the native So Cal crew. I figured he'd get my randomness and maybe comment. I failed. Epically.

No. You don't ask too many questions. Just the right amount of questions.

Also, toaster. Pink toaster.

What the?!? You'd be a pink toaster? I'd love to hear the reasoning behind that one.
Thanks for the answers. I've been through baker a few times, but never knew about the thermometer. Would have been cool to see the one time I drove through Death Valley after my A/C died on the car, oh and the car also temporarily conked out in Death Valley where I had no cell signal. I live in st George Utah though, and it's triple digits every day for multiple months out of the year so Death Valley, meh. View attachment 21421

Bwuahahaha! Nice meme! Yeah, we were lucky to've been driving a Toyota Corolla, a veritably un-breakable car. Also, when we were driving thorugh Moab for the first time, during Spring, we drove into a freak snow storm! It was BEAUTIFUL! And man, I friggin' LOVE St George. I'd love to practice there one day.

Trying to find a good hotel for my interview coming up in October. Thoughts?

I stayed at the Drury inn. They give a free ride to and from the interview.

Well, I just typed out a huge post and lost to my browser, so I'll try to summarize as I have been pretty much a downer as of late.

1. The facilities and people - they're nice, new and reflect that of a campus. You get to meet some new people here too as there are multiple other programs on campus. Lots of events as well going on seemingly all the time, so if you want that undergrad feel again, it can be redone here.

2. Resources - I have a 5th year friend who struggled through 1st year and she's doing great now that the school has helped her. The faculty is very approachable and helpful as many times in the week and tutoring is free and plentiful.

3. Boards - I'd say it's hit or miss with written but for the PE, we were overprepared. The OSCEs can get annoying but I barely had to study for the PE and did just fine.

4. Clinical - I've talked about this many times, but AZCOM won't get in your way if you have all of the fees and paperwork done. Even in 3rd year, you can ship yourself all over the country in many rotations as long as you make your own way.

Overall, AZCOM exemplifies taking responsibility for yourself. If you need help in classes or rotations, seek it out and it will be there ready and waiting. AZCOM has the opportunities but they certainly won't hand them out. Stay proactive and make the plays to get what you want.

I booked at the Sleep Inn. It has pretty good reviews and was only like 50 bucks. What day in October are you going?

Same here. I wasn't sure if it was going to be any good considering the price , but it exceeded my expectations. And, its only few minutes away from campus.

Thanks for this post! One thing I wondered about was the comments left by some of the other students about OMM at AZCOM. Do you agree that it is a weakness for the school? I'm really interested in OMM, so this would be a significant factor in my school selection.

Flu remarked on this a page or two back. If you're sincerely interested in OMM, AZCOM does provide enough opportunity to immerse yourself in it on your own time and also has the OMM scholar program.

They still do the Complimentary and Alternative Medicine lecture and lab. Those in the rat cage that day (for all you applicants, this is not the main OMM lab) were quite lucky as it permitted excellent opportunities for napping and/or playing on your phones...

I sure hope your class helps mine out by complaining. Naturally, the only changes the school implements quickly are either poorly considered (such as the recent inclusion, then exclusion, then altered re-inclusion of an "Honors" category for clinicals) or, by design, steal what little pleasures students have, such as post-match senioritis...

I just read this and I honestly can't believe that lecture is still there. It was so horrendous and unfortunately, I was in the main room, so no wandering off there. We all thought the lecture was a product of 2 OMM fellows but I guess it's something the entire department wants to do, for some insane reason. They claim it's to educate us on what pts might be doing out there, but it felt more like proselytizing than education to me.

The change to the evals would've been nice if they just flat out copy UofA's grading system but instead, it's kind of confusing and near impossible to get honors if my understanding of criteria is correct. They did say they were going to make some major changes soon, specifically about that honors check box, so maybe there are more changes we don't know about. Honestly, it's hard to care beyond my audition rotations and even then, 4th year grades don't go into the transcript or MSPE for ERAS, so it's really hard to care about grades right now

AZCOM is not strong at OMM at all. Like random said, it's actually kind of strange since Dr. Divine and others right for the boards. As far as actually learning the manual technique, AZCOM is probably not the place to go. That said, for the PE, it was more than enough and in a weird way, did not require any specifics. For example, on my PE, the pt complained of tight IT band, so I just made up some muscle energy on the fly and that was it. If you want to challenge yourself with a counterstrain point, be my guest, but the PE doesn't require anything specific or even anything with a name.

In short, if you really want to learn OMM, AZCOM is probably not the place for you.

interviewed here 9/21.. hope my mwu portal changes for the better tomorrow!

During the interview, they mentioned that all of their faculty researchers were "tuition funded" and not grant funded. I am not familiar with this type of research compensation. Would professors be less motivated and driven to produce results? What does everyone think?

I think we could nix the research and save some money on tuition...

As a researcher, I'm guessing the purpose is to allow their scientists to pursue topics that would otherwise be eschewed by the NIH or other grant sources, more of an "I wonder" approach than a "these efforts must lead to a massive effect on a large population" approach. That's just my guess, though, without looking at the specific projects. Lord knows I've wanted to do some pretty innovative research, but was redirected to other projects with more clout behind them...
