Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha well I'm still looking forward to "official" news. That will make it feel more real for me.

Anyways, can any AZCOM students comment on facility hours? Is it a 24 hour library, etc?

Me too! It will feel even more real when we'll start to know the classmates🙂

I just got my acceptance call! Now if someone would just start that thread!

Current first-year here. Library is not 24 hours, usually 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. with earlier openings during finals week. There is a 24 hour study building with cubicles and tables for those night owls.

Scheduled my interview for Jan 29th! Can't wait! I am a bit worried though. Is January too late?

Interview invite today. Found it on the portal. No-email.

Was complete 10/25. Second time applicant. Got put on a pre-interview hold last year but was never offered an interview.

Scheduled for January 29th. Hoping to find a slot before then tho. Super excited!

Interviewed on Oct 23rd (with some of you others out there), my portal contains a checklist : )

Congrats to the others with acceptances, those of you still waiting, good luck and stay confident!

Congrats to all who've been accepted!

I just received an II.....and the only available date is in March....I'd greatly appreciate a heads up if anyone is planning on canceling their interviews!

Ahhhh my portal checklist went up like a week ago but I just want an email or a call to confirm!!! Is an automated email too much to ask 2 weeks after the interview?

Just be happy the turnaround is so quick at AZCOM. Some schools make you wait 3 or 4 weeks to know. If you have an accepted checklist, you're accepted. Don't worry.

AZCOM has been super quick with everything. I got my ii like a week after my secondary and my checklist went up a week after that. That should be reason enough to love this school haha

Is it too late to apply, I noticed interviews are booked through march!!

Are you set on going to this school?

Well it would probably help if you had above average stats at this point.
I have very high stats, Im worried that if they are all booked up there would be no point applying. Are all interview slots gone or have they not opened up days yet.

I have some more interviews but I might either cancel them or go for fun. I'm interviewing at Western soon so I will need to make a tough decision if I get in. But at this point, it's down to those two.

They usually end up having a significant number of dates open up for the latter part of the cycle as more people cancel interviews after acceptances from other schools. Plus, AZCOM typically interviews into late-April/early-May.

Lucky enough to reschedule for December 3rd! Good luck to everyone and congrats to those accepted! 🙂

Just rescheduled my March interview to Dec 2nd! I see 7 open interview dates in March so they're definitely not all booked up yet.

How were you able to reschedule? Did the school contact you or did you just continue checking to see if there was an open slot?

You can log in to your Midwestern portal --> click Interview Scheduling and view open interview dates. People often drop their interviews so just constantly check your portal if you are looking to get earlier interview dates.

I already sent my letters of recommendation to CCOM using interfolio, do I have to send them separately to AZCOM or can the two schools share.

I will be canceling my interview here for 12/06 due to an acceptance at a top choice school. Hoping one of you "late" interviewees will want to snatch that up! Good luck everyone! =)

I just changed my March interview to December 5th!

I just cancelled a 12/2 (Monday) interview, so hopefully someone here can snag it! Looks like a 12/6 (Friday) is available also.

Does anyone know where the students do their rotations?

Early acceptances are getting an email in a few days for site selection. I believe it is mostly Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson) and some spots in IL and Modesto, CA. Will post more accurately once I get the email.

Do you know if this school has outreach programs where students can provide care to low-income or underserved populations? Do they have opportunities for students to go on medical missions or international rotations? I am trying to learn more about this school before I decide to send in secondaries but their website isn't that helpful. Thanks.

I'll let random or DrWily answer that one.

Yea, AZCOM's website is not helpful. I interviewed at AZCOM in September and absolutely loved it (well, everything aside from the tuition). I plan on matriculating here in 2014.

Here are some programs I know of that you can look into:
TOUCH (Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health) program. DO Students complete various community service projects through volunteering at local free clinics, medical fairs, etc.
TOPS (The Team of Physicians for Students) program. Medical students help complete free sports physicals for high school students.
DOCARE international mission trip. MWU collaborates with DOCARE international to provide medical care to people in Guatemala.
HOME (Health Outreach through Medical Education). Med students volunteer at 2 local shelters in Phoenix.

Hope this helps 🙂

Wow thanks..that is very helpful..is there anything else that made you love AZCOM?

When I talked to the medical student in my interview, she said she was able to work in the clinics at Midwestern her 2nd year I believe. She said it was great because she got to help people, and it was good early clinical exposure.

AZCOM just felt like home to me. I went to a large university for undergrad that had a great community and I was looking for the same warm feeling with a med school. All students I talked to raved about the open door policy that profs have here. Profs are very approachable, which is really nice. Also, professors focus on teaching more than research, which makes students their priority. If you want to complete research, there are still lots of opportunities.

The cadaver lab and simulation labs (7 robots, I think?) here are amazing! My undergrad school had a fabulous cadaver lab and this school's lab still topped it. The campus is really nice and it is a place I could see myself studying and spending time. There are lots of places to study and there are plenty of places to relax (gym, outdoor volleyball courts, outdoor eating spots).

I talked to a lot of random students about the school on the day of my interview and everyone loved the school. This was much different than other places I've interviewed. They felt like they were getting a good education and they really enjoyed the community. This is a place I could see myself being happy and excelling.

Additionally, students do well on the COMLEX and USMLE and they seem to get good residency placements.

Does anybody happen to know the approximate post-interview acceptance rate at AZCOM?

The only stats floating around are pre-2010 (~60% rate) and the school's admission practices seem to have become more selective since then.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone here has AZCOM's most recent match list?

Interview invite this morning! I was complete 11/7

Dates available are mostly in March.

Did you guys get the rotation survey? I filled it out and I'm not sure whether or not it sent... After I clicked submit it sent me to the school website.

So as I was looking at the 3rd year rotation, I noticed that both Phoenix (east and west) rotations have the same rural rotation possibilities. Are the rural rotations optional? Is there any way to avoid the really far rotations?

No, you'll be required to do a rural block. Where you go depends on what you want to do that month, as it's essentially an elective month.

So, I do have some control over what rural rotation I do? Basically, I don't want to end up in Kingman, AZ.

Some control. If you want to avoid Kingman, it can be done, but you may have to settle for rotating in a specialty that may not be your top choice.

Hey guys - My secondary application was complete on 11/4 but no interview invite in the portal yet. Has anyone else experienced > 1 month turnaround for ii or does this most likely mean that I am not being considered for an interview? It seems as if most applicants have heard back within 2-3 weeks. Thanks for the info!
