Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

Anybody know if there is a Facebook group?

There will probably be a AZCOM 2020 Facebook group made for you guys but it will include other years and faculty even to share info with you guys that may be pertinent to your class. What we did (class of 2019) is make another students only private Facebook group instead to share things just among our own class. If you guys want to get on that and make your own it would be a good idea. Just don't name it AZCOM 2020 since that's probably what your official group will be named.

Just withdrew my application, hopefully that's enough time for one of you to get my interview date this Friday, Feb 26. If you've got a date, log on to AZCOM's portal and pick up my interview slot!

Just received an II from the interview waitlist. I will likely be withdrawing my application so I hope it goes to one of you fine folks. Best of luck!!

Great to hear there's some sort of movement on the pre-II wait list. Did you send in an update letter?

Received an II this morning! Been on the waitlist since September.

I did not send any updates in. I was placed on the II waitlist in November.

I've decided to give up my seat since I've been accepted at a school that is a better fit for me. Good luck to everyone and stay strong! :luck:

Congrats! Also, this is why wait listed people shouldn't give up hope already. I believe there will be only more withdraw in the coming months since AZCOM draw from such an excellent applicant pool that gets a lot of overlap with other competitive programs.

Interviewed yesterday and I thought it was great. Students and faculty speak really candidly about their program. The interview was not stressful, and very conversational; roughly what I expected, but I'd say be ready to think on your feet if you get thrown a curveball question or two.

I'd say the highlights for me were that the campus wasn't just one building, and you have some really nice grounds to walk through outdoors in between. Also the fitness facilities were much better than any other school at which I've interviewed, if you're into that. Most schools I've seen give you a small room somewhere with some equipment but AZCOM has indoor and outdoor basketball courts, volleyball, a weight room, another room with lots of machines, a ballet room (not sure if you call it that but one of those rooms that are mostly empty with a bar and mirrors), and raquetball. I might be forgetting something but I think you probably get the idea.

I was wondering, I paid my deposit, filled out needed forms and submitted my missing documents....what to expect next? I'm hinting on an email with options to choose rotation sites. 🙂 Not sure if I'm rushing things too much. Thank you.

Well the next steps would be to file out financial aid paperwork and wait for the rotation site choice email. They'll come eventually 😉

Does anyone have any insight onto what specifically you liked about the schools curriculum? So far I'm seeing that it's traditional, and the open door policy with professors sounds awesome! And I read somewhere that there are frequent tests and no block scheduling - can anyone elaborate? And anything else that's pretty unique/standout about the school's curriculum in general?

Would really appreciate it, thanks! 🙂

Just a heads up to future accepted students, I never got an acceptance email or call... but did get the snail mail like almost 3 weeks after portal change. So, if the same thing ever happens to you, don't be concern.

Has anyone who submitted their rotation preferences December or later heard back yet? I called the office about 3 weeks ago and the lady said she would take care of it by the end of the next week but nothing yet..

Check your email. They just sent out an update to include Chicago as a possible site.

I submitted my preferences in early December. After submitting I heard back within two weeks. It may be taking them a little bit longer to work everything out depending on when you submitted your site rankings. I'm sure you'll hear from them soon though!

I was assigned east valley awhile ago, which was my top choice. However now with this Chicago site I'm reconsidering it all. Do any current students know if a specific site has more ward based rotations versus another? Thanks

I'm surprised I never posted on this thread but I was wait listed for an interview opportunity. Does any one have an idea of when interviews go until? I feel like time is dwindling down. Any insight is appreciated!

my mistake... last year orientation started July 27-29 and then classes starts the following Monday.

wow did we interview in the same campus?! from what I saw the gym was literally just a tiny ass room. I think they had 1 (one) (uno) squat rack for the entire school. not nearly enough.

really? that's interesting. are you comparing it to other schools you've visited? I don't mean that it was a huge gym by any means, but I've interviewed at around a half dozen schools so far and Midwestern had by far the most work out facilities. maybe that says less about MWU and more about the other schools though.

I mean I agree with you... I am coming from a larger school so the gym was very big. I have to realize that DO schools are generally very very small in comparison and will thus have minimal resources dedicated to working out. IDK

Received II last week of February. Canceled my interview and withdrew my application after being accepted to another school. Hope that spot goes to one of you!

If this school turns out to be the one for me im probably gonna look into an old school chalk'N'chains joint.

Does anyone know how many seats are left? And what the interview/acceptance rate is? I. Am interviewing here in a cpl of weeks and would just like some input.

Thanks,
Dom

I would say a good amount is still left.. not sure about the acceptance rate this late in the cycle but I'm guessing 60-70%? Probably best not to think about this before your interview though. If you don't have an acceptance already then any opportunity is a good one.

As of about a week ago they had ~25 % left and with their class size that's a lot of seats.

I am an MS1 here and I really love the open door policy. You can meet with professors any time if you stop in and they are there or you can schedule appointments with them and they will block out time for you (My study group and I do this before exams to get all our questions answered.) That is nice because you are studying/learning with people that know it (and who write the exam questions) instead of bouncing "I think that is right" between the group alone. The professors are awesome as far as that goes. With that said, I know a lot of people who don't utilize it and study on their own and do well as well. The curriculum is pretty traditional and busy just like any med school, and the open door policy is kind of a big selling point of the school. Like you said there are a lot of tests minimum one a week, often two a week (Mondays & Fridays) occasionally more. It is a lot like 5th year at Hogwarts.

Does anyone know if there are April or May interview dates?

Thanks.

I interviewed last Thursday, when I picked an interview date about 2 weeks before that there were at least 12 interview days still not filled up. I don't know how many seats are available in each though. I think there were May dates available but I'm not 100% sure. Definitely April dates though.

I was invited to interview last week and all my dates were the last week of March (happy Easter apparently), but there was a statement on the page that said if those dates didn't work, I could wait for more to become available. April seems like a safe bet.

I would recommend interviewing the earliest you can to give yourself the highest chances to get in.

Does anyone know when classes begin for AZCOM? Also, any idea when the breaks/holidays are in AZCOM's schedule? Thank you!

MSI here. If your schedule is anything like ours, your first day of class should be the first Monday of August. 12 weeks after that should be Fall Break. You'll get a week off for Thanksgiving and 2 weeks off for Winter Break. Then you have one day off for MLK and a week off for Spring Break (ours was 2/13-2/21). After that there's no breaks til Summer.

Also just a note about rotations...they're always changing. There's not going to be too many major changes, but AZCOM continues to work on adding more rotation options and renegotiating current rotation options. You'll be able to trade as time goes on. It's Spring Quarter right now and we still have people trading rotation options with each other as they feel fit. If you get one of the bigger/popular rotation sites, it's pretty easy to find someone to switch with you (E Valley, W Valley, LA are big ones that people are always looking for/trading).

And again, if anyone has questions about the school or interview process, feel free to message me. A study break is always welcome 😛

interviewed last week, anyone know when the portal might be updated?
