Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sooo if I interviewed 8/29 and I have not heard back yet, should I be concerned?

I thought when you hear kind of depends on who your admissions committee members are? It's weird to me that some people have heard their admissions decision already. And I was reading on last year's thread that some people just didn't hear anything and had to call to get their rejection. Basically I'm panicking.

I called, they said I have to wait they didnt review my application yet.

So whats the deal with rotation spots? I was accepted a week ago (yeaaaaaaaaa), so do the first people who are accepted have first dibs after we pay the 1,000 deposit?

I was lurking in the UNE form and I saw you had an II there as well, can I ask why AZCOM is your top choice school?

May I also ask why AZCOM is your number 1?

A couple of reasons. The most important thing to look for I think is fit, regardless of anything else about the school. If you are good enough to get into medical school, you have the potential to be successful anywhere and it's your responsibility to do what feels the best to you. I loved everything about AZCOM on the tour/interview day. And, they didn't set us up with what I think of as "plant students" who seem overly enthusiastic and unwilling to give an honest critique. I could picture myself there and it wasn't somewhere that I felt like I'd have to suffer through four years until I could do what I really wanted to do. And, AZCOM was in my top 3 schools and I interviewed at my other top two and didn't like them the way I thought I would.

As far as practical reasons, I'm from the Midwest and eventually do see myself returning to the area to practice someday. I've lived in the same state my whole life, went to university in the same state. I want to try something new before committing to going back. I like that AZCOM gives me the opportunity to live in the Phoenix area for 2 years and potentially do rotations back in Chicago in 3rd and 4th year in the area I'd like to practice. I'm interested in EM and I like that AZCOM doesn't push primary care and has good specialty matches. I like that the gross anatomy lab is traditional with students dissecting cadavers because I know that I learn better by doing. The rotation schedule seems well set up and offers plenty of opportunity for audition rotations and even the required rural rotation doesn't have to be in primary care. As long as it is a rural site, I could do it in EM if I wanted to. At this point most of the rotation sites are well established and AZCOM requires some of the rotations be wards rotations (I think they said most people have 50:50). They also have an established program to get research experience if I so desire. And a recurring mission trip to Guatemala with DOCARE.

Oh, and they are actively involved in opening new residencies.

Sorry, this is a mish-mosh of all of the facts that popped to mind. I'm sure I could come up with more too. But mostly, I really can't describe that it just felt right. I'd be happy to answer with any more specific questions you have based on this. I'm soo excited!

You have to pay your deposit first and then supposedly an email comes to your midwestern account. I haven't gotten it yet though...

II today!! They really are quick - I sent in my app just a couple weeks ago. Definitely excited to check this school out!

Just curious, but does AZCOM do MMI's? Or do they just follow the traditional interview format?

Once you pay the deposit, you rank order the rotation sites

I called the admissions office and was told that it didn't matter when we paid the deposit, as long as it was before the December deadline. Our rotation selection is based on the order of our acceptance, not the order of paying the deposit. That's what I was told, but please tell me if any of you were told differently.

I've paid the deposit and haven't been asked to rank the sites yet so I don't know. Depending on how anxious I get, I might call next week.

I called the admissions office again and got the definitive answer that we pick rotations in the order we pay the deposit. First come, first serve. I must have misunderstood the first time I called. Sorry for the confusion! I was hoping to not have to spend 1000$ unless it was completely necessary, but oh well.

Did they say anything about it taking a couple weeks or anything like that?

So I'm interviewing here but am travelling to PHX from the PA area.

I've never left my home state and have only been on an airplane twice in my life.

Anyone wanna help me plan my interview, flight and hotel? I've never done any travelling before :\

This is what I did: book a ticket through expedia. Book your flight to arrive at least before noon on the day before your interview, because flights get delayed all the time. Book a hotel from the list of hotels near the school provided by AZCOM. You can either pick one that's closer to the hotel and then uber to AZCOM on interview day, or pick a hotel that offers complementary shuttle service to AZCOM (call to double check this). Or you can choose to rent a car. Definitely make sure the hotel has complementary breakfast. Phoenix is going to be really hot in August for someone from a northern state, so you really can't walk outside for longer than 5 minutes. So if you are not renting a car, then make sure you have the uber app on your phone. Lastly, check out the local area around your hotel and try to find supermarkets like walmart or target, so you can buy food and water.

I am a first year at AZCOM. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability

I think noon the day before your interview is a bit overkill. I booked ticket via student universe (arrived ~6 pm at PHX), used super shuttle for to/from the airport, and the Drury hotel shuttle for to/from AZCOM. Everything went super smoothly and there were a couple of other guys that did the same exact thing as me so I wasn't really ever stuck alone in a confusing situation. Also the Drury was only $80, free shuttle, free dinner/breakfast, and 3 free drink tickets. Just sayin.

1. My interview is on 10/31, should i arrive 10/29 or 10/30?
2. How long is the interview? What day should I select to depart on? Afternoon (1-2p) or late afternoon (5-6pm) on 10/31?

1) Whichever you want. If you want to spend a few days in Phoenix then do 10/29. But getting in the day before (10/30) is plenty of time
2) I think I was done ~2:30. Late afternoon the day of you interview is best. I took a red eye home but that's just cause it was cheaper. I personally wouldn't schedule a flight any sooner than 2.5-3 hours after the interview is over. Also depends on how you're getting to the airport. If you're doing hotel shuttle+super shuttle then don't forget to factor that in.

1. I interviewed at AZCOM on 9/1. I got there 8/31 late, and then stayed at the Drury Inn, which was awesome (they give you free wine and have an AZCOM shuttle, and weren't obscenely pricey). AZCOM shuttle was free, so I only had to spend money to Uber from the airport to the hotel and back again. They also offer rideshares to the hotel (I think it's called a Super Shuttle), but it was just about as expensive as the Uber and far less convenient, so I just took Uber.

2. When I was there, the interview was towards the end of the day. I'd say try to get a relatively late flight if you can (I think mine left at like...seven?), so that then you're not in a huge rush to leave and get to the interview. I had time to change out of my interview clothes (which was great because it was 102 when I was there), make sure all my stuff was in order, and then head to the airport and chill for a bit.

Update on Rotation Site Selection for anyone wondering: I emailed the admissions office and they said that the first survey asking for rotation site ranking will not go out until Late November or Early December.

Also, does anyone know if we create our own facebook group or the school does?

Same! Pleasantly surprised, I thought I had botched the interview given the frowns/poker faces some of my (admittedly too honest) answers seem to elicit.

Yeah me too, accepted today.

AZ native. Submitted my secondary exactly one month ago. Called the admissions office just now and was told Im waitlisted for an interview. The receptionist proceeded by telling my that it is rolling admissions and that the "next set of interviews are in February-March." I got really confused as to why this is the case for a rolling admissions style. If I'm completely out of the loop please let me know. Getting kinda restless here. Thanks again

How do you know that u r accepted? If there is an x on bachelors degree does that mean wait list or accepted?

If you have the option to pay the $1000 deposit in the accepted portal, it means you're accepted. If you haven't completed your undergraduate degree yet, there will be an X there until you submit an official transcript the summer post grad/pre matriculation.

Also, does anyone know if we create our own facebook group or the school does?

theres gonna be 2 groups. One that has upperclassmen and the class of 2021 together and one that has just the class of 2021. The latter one will be the one you guys create

Okay so I can now see the accepted students checklist, but when I try to open one of the docs it says my information is being processed. Does this mean I'm in or nah?

rolling admissions means they accept students as they get get applications. The earlier you submit the better because you are fighting for more seats. If they have already determined that you are waitlisted for an interview, they will set your application aside until February I guess and then review it for whatever remaining spots they have. Not ideal but it is not a rejection.
