Northwestern vs NYU

Hey everyone

I have had the privilege of being accepted into both northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and NYU school of Medicine. I am now deciding between these two schools. Taking out the financial side and only looking at both of these schools only by the best education which one in your opinion is better?

Same opportunity for education. Both are great schools. I would pick based on location.

I really like both cities though living in New York is something I've always wanted to do at least for a few years. I do however have a sister that is very close to me living in Chicago and I'm sure having family close will help when it gets tough.

I was going by the rankings too until they threw a curve ball and ranked NYU higher this year hahaha

Whatever you do don't do it by the rankings. That's a sure-fire way to make a piss poor decision.

Oh no I'm not basing my decision on the rankings. But seeing as I like them both equally and like both locations I'm taking rankings into consideration too. I'm really just hoping the second looks will change my mind.

Probably not tbh. They both rank high enough where you'll be good to go either way. I think it comes down to location here. Differences in education and system usually end up being negligible.

It should come down to location and the quality of your classmates (from what you can assess at 2nd look). Everything else between those two is roughly a wash. I would pick the school that seems to have the least amount of neurotic basket cases. Med school already attracts so many odd ducks that I think you should pick whichever has people that you "fit" with better (fit is so terribly overused but it probably is appropriate in this).

If you can think 4-5 years down the road, you should consider your goals for residency. NYU would probably give you a better shot for NYC programs. Easier access to possible NY away rotations, greater chance that a NY program director will know your recommenders, and most schools have a lot of inbreeding. Have you seen the match lists for 2015? Take a look, HMS is a good example. If you want to stay in Chicago, Northwestern may be the better choice. Either way, congratulations!

I'd personally choose NYU but that's just me. You can't go wrong with either.
