NYU seems to have a better teaching hospital and more appealing location but Northwestern has a better overall reputation (i think...) Similar cost of attendance for both. HELP!!! Any input appreciated!

NU if you want to do residency in Chicago or the midwest.

NYU if you want to do residency in NYC or the northeast.

Both schools have strong regional reputation, and pretty decent national reputations, probably roughly equivalent.

^^ This. Also, would you rather live in NYC or Chicago?

Between NYC and Chicago, no idea... I'd rather live in California

I would go with NYU because I would think that NYC>Chicago for 4 years. Plus, I've heard Northwestern's heavy PBL curriculum doesn't work for a lot of people.

I think this is a misconception. Any school in this range will match students appreciably all across the country. It's a phenomenon of self-selection more than anything else.

That said, I interviewed at NU and enjoyed it. It's a tad more highly regarded. I imagine the only advantage at NYU might be the clinical training at NYU and the more diverse patient base. I thought NU was incredibly well-located and enjoyed Chicago, but some people are averse to the excessive PBL.

Barring any major considerations (i.e. proximity to family/friends), I'd choose on the basis of Chicago vs. NY.

No misconception. All med schools have some grads move away for residency. Just look at the NU and NYU match lists to see that the majority of their grads stay local or within the region. There is self-selection involved - someone who wants to stay in Chicago or the midwest attends NU in the first place, same with NYU and other NYC area schools. But the residency programs in Chicago and NYC are most familiar with the grads of the local med schools that are effectively "feeder schools" for their programs and these programs are more likely to offer placements to those grads because of their already established ties to the area.

Read my post again - I am suggesting that IF you want to do a residency in these areas, you should take advantage of the self-selection bias.
