Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Hmm I was wondering where the interview is going to be held at? Is it at the Terry Building first floor?

Also, does everyone have a DO letter? I talked to a DO and he had said he would write a letter, but it's been 3 months and he kind of just stopped talking to me. Not sure why but I'm prob just gonna have to submit an MD letter instead. :scared:

Edit: This is after trying through email, phone, etc. a bunch of times to just get in contact with him over the past 2 months.
I don't have a DO letter and I've gotten 4 iis so far. I think you just need to be able to talk about your DO experiences and why DO. If you've shadowed, you can mention it in the interview and I am sure they will take note of it.

The confirmation email had a link with information about the interview day

Got an interview !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/23!

I have two D.O. letters but I think it's completely fine with an MD letter as long as you can talk about your exposure to osteopathic medicine and be able to answer the "why DO?" question.

It took me 4 months to get a letter from a DO. I asked him in person in April, Reminded him gently, also in person, in May. Then emailed every other week in June, and once a week in July. Each time I increased the urgency of my request. I started off by saying that I needed the letter when I submitted secondaries, and ended by saying that I had secondaries in that I was completing and was going to submit them in 2 days.

My last request was on a Friday, and the letter was available in Interfolio on Monday.

I hope you can get your letter. DOs should know that new medical students need LORs, and DOs should know that a DO letter is required. If AOA is all about expanding the DO profession, then more DOs should be willing to write letters.

Thanks. I guess I'll try and send more emails to him, but right now I'm starting to call around and just asking any DO if I can shadow them and ask for a letter... >_<.

Yup, interviews are on the first floor of the Terry (HPD) Building. When you walk through the front entrance hang a right at the security counter. Admissions will be straight in front of you through the glass doors. You might need to check in at the first desk on the right.

Try the crackers inside the glass jars of the waiting room. They are amazing if you ask me!

Does anyone know if they will send you an email or notify you somehow if you weren't selected for an interview to let you know you weren't selected?

You might want to check out last year's thread.

Here's a silly question. Does NSU (or any other DO school, for that matter) require a copy of your official transcripts before they invite you for an interview? Or does the grade calculation from AACOMAS suffice? The reason I ask is I received an e-mail saying I may access a list of my outstanding requirements via WebStar, and I noticed that my transcripts were not set to "received". Should I be worried? I thought they would only need official transcripts before matriculation.

EDIT: Never mind, I see this was addressed earlier in the thread. Going to go back and see what the conclusion was...

All of our portals say that. I was told on the phone that I don't need to submit transcripts unless I have been accepted and plan on attending their school.

Hello everyone,

I am new to this thread and I have not had a chance to read the entire thing. I received a phone call today from someone at NOVA saying that I processed my secondary and that I should hear from NOVA soon. Did anyone else receive a phone call like this? Does this mean that I could be receiving a interview invite soon?

Thanks.

I never got a phone call. I submitted my secondary, received a few vague emails and received an interview invite by email after weeks of silence.

anyone else have problems with this school receiving LORs?

I called them today and they told me that I was marked as having only one LOR. That is funny because I sent six of them at the same time from Interfolio. The person then saw that there were more, so she marked them all as being there. That may have been holding up my II.

I really want to schedule an interview because I got an II from LECOM-B, and I only want to take one trip from the west coast to Florida. It is almost $700 for airfare! I was expecting closer to $500. This is not a trip that I want to make twice.

i am in a similar situation. My adviser sent out my letters last friday and all schools have recieved them without a problem. For some reason, this school is saying they never got any of my LORs. Now I gotta wait till Monday to have my adviser resend my LORs. I would hate to have to fly to Florida from west coast twice.

Looks like NSU has required summer school? True?

What?!? If this is true then NSU just dropped a couple of notches in my book.
Wonder what class attendance policy is, or first two years structure is like overall for that matter. I need to research a little more. Lol

It is bottom of the list for me now anyhow...

Required summer school is an automatic deal breaker if I have multiple acceptances. I'd rather do research after M1 and study for Step 1 after M2.

I'd prefer to not do research at all if I don't have to. Just not that interesting to me. I'm sure with the right topic of study I'd change my opinion, but that's where I'm at right now.

Why bottom of the list? Just wondering if there's anything I haven't heard that I should consider.

Many reasons... First being I don't want the school to get in the way of my plans. Away rotations have to be preapproved. Now I know other schools do this but the way NOVA makes it seem that a no answer is very likely. Second required summer programs... When am I going to study for USMLE and/or COMLEX? Third, they are the worst organized school I have seen so far. Fourth, Area prestige... They are competing with UM,FIU, and FAU all are vastly better schools. Fifth, I never really ranked it very high to begin with. Sixth, their interview selection processes makes no sense, I have studied it over the last two cycles and I still can't tell if it is random, based on top grades and scores, forgiving, competing ideas or all of the above. Seventh, the school is insanely expensive. Finally this is just one few schools that I have met multiple graduates from and to be honest the way they practice medicine I found to be unethical and/or dangerous. How much of that reflects on NOVA I couldn't tell you but I believe it is a factor.

To be honest however if I was interviewed and accepted and I was not accepted by any other school in the time window to pay my deposit. I would pay them and go there if I was not accepted to any other higher ranked MD school because I can't afford to hold onto multiple DO acceptance.

Wow, thanks for your take on it. I hadn't considered those factors. I will probably pay for the first acceptance spot that comes along, and then eat that cost if a better school offers me later. Can't afford to skimp or be stingy on my education. Lol

People seem to forget that the tuition here is about 50k for out of state. That's the same as CCOM,AZCOM and WVSOM. You will find bad doctors from all schools. The mandatory summer school sucks (if that's what it is) but I don't think anyone has actually called the school to verify, it could only be a 2-3 week course. If research is a huge deal it should be known that you can apply for a one year research fellowship and get a significant amount taken off your tuition. Nova is one of the few DO schools that has ward based rotations ( some people dont like that but I do). Florida also appears to be a very DO friendly state and Miami Children's has multiple DOs in their residency programs (I want to go into peds). Plus instead of running all over the country for third and fourth year there's a high chance you'll stay in the general area which is nice because moving blows.

But obviously this school won't be for everyone.

At what point do people do that one year of research? Between M4 and PGY-1?

Perhaps just a cool note, the larkin community hospital where they do rotations was just designated as a teaching hospital (i.e. They have 100+ residents in 7 or more specialties) according to their facebook page. I don't think I'd mind rotating in a teaching hospital. Pros? Cons? Anybody?

This reason alone is good enough.

HAHA this post is so entertaining!

Just to clear a few things up - the summer classes listed on the website occur between M1 and M2 year. You have 2 classes during the month of May and 2 classes during the month of July, so you have a little over a month off in between. After M2 year I'm pretty sure we'll finish end of April/early May and most people took the boards sometime in June, so there were 4-6 weeks of time for board prep with no classes.

There is a research fellowship and also an OPP fellowship that you can apply for as an M2 - there are 5 or 6 OPP fellows and 2 research fellows. You would do the fellowship as a year between M2 and M3. The OPP one is very structured - they teach and work in the clinic at school among other things. The research one seems to be more choose/find your own project. The biggest bonus of these (besides the experience): your 3rd and 4th year tuition is FREE.

I haven't looked at different tuitions in a while, but my in-state school didn't have much of a tuition break, so from what I remember Nova was pretty much in line with other schools I applied to (I guess Lecom was the exception, but I don't think I even applied there).

The money factor isn't so much of a big deal for me so it alone can never be a deal breaker...

Unless the extra money is going towards a significantly higher quality education and/or opening more doors for residency, why accumulate extra debt?

I'd rather like the location, rotation sites and curriculum and have the extra debt than go to the cheapest school I can find and hate everything about it. People have different priorities when picking a medical school..money isn't the biggest factor for me personally

To be honest... I find this to be a bot confusing and maybe you can help clear it up. Do you know of any med student at NOVA that take both USMLE and comlex exams? What about away rotations for 3rd and or 4th year can they be done? I am told by the ADCOM that away rotation would have to be pre approved and they to discourage it strongly? What is OPP? No away rotations is a major deal breaker for me.

Well I feel kind of dumb, but what exactly are away rotations?

Away rotations can also be called audition rotations. If there is a place where you really want to do your residency, you do one of your elective rotations there. If the place is not one of the "normal" locations for the school you attend, it is called an away rotation. If it is a place your school normally sends students then it is just an audition rotation.

It sounds like Worldchanger36 really wants to do rotations away from the school he attends (maybe to be closer to his hometown or place where he wants to settle), and Nova sounds like they don't like students to do that.

Personally, I will probably try to do a few away rotations at a place where I would like to settle when I am done. that way I can get to know the physicians in the area and start to make contacts for residency. I think I heard that a majority of physicians stay in the area where they had their residency.

Great explanation. Away rotations are really the only shot you have to show your stuff to a residency that you want to get their attention. ACGME (MD) residency really want to see what you have to offer before ranking you highly. AOA residency do as well. So if you have a target in mind away rotations can give you the edge you need to get into that top choice. From what I am getting NOVA seems to what to keep you as close as possible after med school.
