Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Great explanation. Away rotations are really the only shot you have to show your stuff to a residency that you want to get their attention. ACGME (MD) residency really want to see what you have to offer before ranking you highly. AOA residency do as well. So if you have a target in mind away rotations can give you the edge you need to get into that top choice. From what I am getting NOVA seems to what to keep you as close as possible after med school.

Whats giving you the impression that they make it difficult for you to get your rotations? I've read a lot about them and haven't gotten this impression at all. Just interested in seeing if you've read something I've missed. I'm under the impression that most programs require you to get approval for your away rotations.

Many reasons... First being I don't want the school to get in the way of my plans. Away rotations have to be preapproved. Now I know other schools do this but the way NOVA makes it seem that a no answer is very likely. Second required summer programs... When am I going to study for USMLE and/or COMLEX? Third, they are the worst organized school I have seen so far. Fourth, Area prestige... They are competing with UM,FIU, and FAU all are vastly better schools. Fifth, I never really ranked it very high to begin with. Sixth, their interview selection processes makes no sense, I have studied it over the last two cycles and I still can't tell if it is random, based on top grades and scores, forgiving, competing ideas or all of the above. Seventh, the school is insanely expensive. Finally this is just one few schools that I have met multiple graduates from and to be honest the way they practice medicine I found to be unethical and/or dangerous. How much of that reflects on NOVA I couldn't tell you but I believe it is a factor.

To be honest however if I was interviewed and accepted and I was not accepted by any other school in the time window to pay my deposit. I would pay them and go there if I was not accepted to any other higher ranked MD school because I can't afford to hold onto multiple DO acceptance.

1. Audition/Away rotations: Most of my classmates asked for open spots from the away institution first, then they sent in the paperwork to NSU administration for approval. It is rather easy to set up rotations in DO hospitals. MD hospital rotations are approved by away institutions through VSAs, and you'll find that process a pain in the ass regardless of where you go to school, only because they take until May/June of the end of your third year before you find out whether you've been approved or not. Contrast that with DO hospitals rotations, where I knew where I was going in January. How much is NSU an obstacle in all this? Not much, as long as you have the paperwork ready for them to review.

2. Summer class: Does not equal non-stop preclinicals. I can only speak for my class, but we had 4 weeks vacation between M1 and M2. The first 4 weeks of M2 are your "summer classes." Between the end of M2 and the start of M3 rotations, there are 8 weeks. I did not find either break adequate, but it was doable as far as studying and passing the tests. My smarter classmates and some of my dumber ones took both USMLE and COMLEX. The smarter ones did well, the dumber ones did not.

3. Prestige: Vastly better schools? With exception to UM, which I think is a better school, you'll find a variety of opinions amongst attendings regarding medical students of the other schools.

4. Interview selection: No arguments there.

5. School tuition: How does their tuition compare to other DO schools? Last I checked it was comparable. Now cost of living, ie rent, is arguably more expensive if you're coming from a place where rent is dirt cheap.

6. Quality of the graduates: If you meet a NOVA grad in a DO residency doing an uncompetitive specialty, chances are they are more dumb than smart. If you meet a NOVA grad in a competitive DO residency (Ortho) or a MD residency, chances are they are as smart as their MD counterparts. It depends. I've met really dumb NOVA residents who could barely tell you the purpose of a beta blocker, and I've met some who could explain their diagnoses down to a physiologic and biochemical standpoint and recite specific guidelines along with it.

7. What's the bottom line: While NOVA hardly sets the standard for a shining medical education, and believe me I have many gripes with it and would defecate on the Dean's face if I could, the argument that it is a ****** factory or genius factory is worthless. I want to point out, if you are a smart person and end up attending NOVA, you will get into as good a residency as your grades, board scores, and DO degree will allow. If you are a dumb person and attend NOVA, and end up graduating, they have a LOT of affiliated residencies that you can latch onto and will grant you an interview simply because you are a NOVA graduate. Many of these dumb graduates end up at these residencies, learn to practice very defensive medicine without putting much thought into what they are doing. Some of these dumb residents end up harming many patients due to negligence, lack of medical knowledge, or a combination of both. But still, they graduate residency with 6 figure jobs. And guess what? NSU is not the only medical school like that.

Now this begs the question, what is the ratio of medically competent to incompetent graduates that NSU puts out?

Looking at my own class I'd say everyone in the top 50% of the class is going to do fine in residency. The top half of the third quartile will do well enough in a DO residency. The rest of them will have knowledge gaps and will struggle should they be lucky enough to match.

And I forgot to mention, even some of the dumb residents put on a good facade of competence, until you ask them a basic question and they piss their pants and ask you to look it up yourself.

Very insightful. Thank you!

Being from North Miami and dealing with the hospitals in the area I think I have some inclination as to the "prestige" regarding schools.

FIU/ FAU are both brand new schools and barely have any reputation. Nova has been around for a bit and has built up their reputation, more around Broward, but still better than the two mentioned previously. UM is obvioulsy a great school and in my opinion the only other school reputation wise in South Florida that can blow Nova out of the water. The other two just haven't been around long enough.

Nova's match is pretty awesome, better than LECOM in my opinion.

As for the cost of living: it is quite cheap in Davie. Iiving now in NYC, I now know what expensive truly is and Davie/Ft. Lauderdale is not expensive.

It's been said but I'll reiterate; Nova's cost is comparable to most other DO schools and when you factor in the fact that they have special programs such as tuition free MPH (for select students) it actually makes it pretty competitive.

Thanks for chiming in food. It's definitely appreciated! Personally I was initially drawn to medicine through ophthalmology, and I know they have a residency associated with the school. Any idea how competitive this residency is? Do you have an advantage by being an NSU student? Just curious if you know of any students heading that direction in their career?

(as a note, I'm interested in many specialties, but this is one I have not ruled out in any way)

I called them today and they told me that I was marked as having only one LOR. That is funny because I sent six of them at the same time from Interfolio. The person then saw that there were more, so she marked them all as being there. That may have been holding up my II.

I really want to schedule an interview because I got an II from LECOM-B, and I only want to take one trip from the west coast to Florida. It is almost $700 for airfare! I was expecting closer to $500. This is not a trip that I want to make twice.

dsoz

It wasn't your LORs because they don't need them to give you an II. They don't have any of my LORs, and I am interviewing 8/30.

I was thinking WTF! But then I looked at your MDApps and saw you're from Oregon so that makes sense. Still sucks though!

I rescheduled my LECOM interview and was able to get round trip tickets for less than $500.

The $700 was when I was scheduled for a Wednesday interview, now I have a Monday interview and the airfare is less.

So there are several situations that take away 3rd and 4th year tuition and I would imagine similiar military and NHSC scholarships as compared to other schools. The area is expensive but cheaper than say NYCOM or CCOM. Tuition is similiar to other schools. I think they must just report the school's average debt in a funky manner.

Still expensive but maybe the goverment will hand us a nice debt forgiveness after 10 years right?

Ok when I called to ask about away rotations they said that I would have to get it preapproved and that they strongly discourage this. I took this to mean nova will make it hard on me if I want to do away rotations. After clarification with a few current student I believe her intent was to save me trouble of trying to get approved to do md rotations and out of state rotations. These are apparently a real beast to get approval on both ends. So to give nova cred while they can make it hard to do away rotations they are only half of the issue.

Hi Guys,

I made a 25 on MCAT (vr-7, PS-9, BS-9). I submitted 6 LOR's and applied very early (in july). I have called them and they said that my application is there but I haven't received any interview invites. Is it because of my mcat score?

That would be my guess.

Gpa?

For those whose LORs have been received, does your online portal notify you of this?

3.5. I am a computer science student. Graduated in dec 2010. Took all the prereq and got either A's or B's

what was your MCAT score if you dont mind me asking. I thought the average MCAT was about 24 for DO school

24 is the average for all takers. Many DO schools have an average MCAT of closer to 27, and the top schools have an average of 28 or 29.

With the economy being so bad still, there are more and more people wanting to go to graduate or professional schools. That means that schools can be more selective and take only the best applicants.

If these trends continue, DO schools will have identical stats to MD schools soon.

Or is that just wishful thinking?

average matriculant score is a 26.5 to be exact. overall stats for matriculants for DO will be the same or decrease slighty, imo. Mainly because of the constant addition of new schools/seats that balance out the increase in apps. if you look over the past three years the stats for matriculants have been relatively the same too. Top DO schools may become more competitive though.

So does anyone know if they have already selected all the students for the first round of interview?

Top DO schools are who? I think Nova would be one

People argue about it all the time but it seems like ccom, ,kcom, dmu, and pcom are always mentioned. Who knows....

That definitely seems to be the general consensus. But I like to throw in the LECOMs simply because of the $$$ "saved" 😀

Right? When I heard about LECOM-B i added to the list immediately because of this fact.

I've said it once and I'm sure I'll repeat it many times this cycle: unless another school offers significantly better education quality and/or residency preparation, LECOM looks might attractive. 🙂

I submitted my stuff ages ago and have yet to hear anything back. Anyone in a similar boat? I thought my stats were competitive for NOVA.

Give it some time. They receive a lot of applications each cycle. If you want, give them a call just to introduce yourself and see if they have everything. Last cycle I called after a few months and not hearing anything. I ended up finding out that I was invited for an interview. I hadn't received an email invite because their system was acting funny.

Good luck!

yeah im a florida res and submitted ages ago and havent heard anything either lol

Hang in there! Call them if you want, they are really nice. It just takes a little bit to get through to them.

Anyone make reservations at a hotel yet? If so do you have information on any shuttles to/from the airport/NSU?

I made a reservation for the holiday inn express... it was the least expensive and they told me they have shuttles from the airport and to campus (which is really close anyway).... The hotel is on the list given by the school in the interview email!!

Is that the Sawgrass Mills one on 3003 University? Did they say how often the shuttles run? I've tried calling three times now but the lines have been busy.

Luckily for me my dad lives in Pembroke Pines so it would be a 15 minute drive for me. WOOT WOOT!

Will those of you who interview this upcoming week post your experiences, pros/cons, interview questions, etc.? Thank you ahead of time for those who do! I know I'll be posting mine after the 30th.

Can't quite figure out this portal... I have a processed application and can click on the link to view application summary but the only real info I am seeing is what dates they received stuff from me. Is that what everyone else has got as well? Also how did you guys find out about interviews? email?

Yeah the WebSTAR portal can be a little difficult to deal with. The only thing you really get from it as an applicant is dates for when stuff was received. Thus you can figure out what still hasn't been processed yet. Interview invitations are typically sent through email, but as I have said in the past... be patient but proactive. I hadn't heard anything from Nova for about 1.5-2 months and when I called to see what my status was, I found out that I had been invited for an interview but their system was down so I didn't receive the official email until a few days later.

Yeah that's what my portal looks like too. Kind of like a chart type thing.
You should also get an email saying "Documents Received"

I got my interview invite the same day they said they received my letters (and it was by e-mail)

Cool thanks for the advice, sorry for being such a n00b. I think I will give them a call and see whats up. All of my stuff was received August 6th so I'm gettin a little nervous about not having heard anything from them.
