Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
NOVA is my top DO school and apparently they dont want me.

They've called two people I know for interviews. Both individuals had lower MCAT and gpa's than I do with not as many EC's.

Any ideas on what's going?

I hear you there. I have slightly better stats than you, and I still have not heard back. I was complete 7/19 and have not heard anything yet.

Anyone interviewing on 9/11?
Complete around mid Aug, ii a week later.

Thanks everyone for your travel tips for the suits, you rock. As for the scheduling glitch I noticed that when I first went to register there was no open dates until November. Checked back a couple days later and there were a ton of open dates. My advice is, if you have not scheduled your flight/hotel, schedule an interview where you can and check back a couple times before you buy the rest.

Hope that helps the rest of you!

yea that is exactly what happened to me. For September its either the 6th or 11th. I just moved my time.

Just finished my interview day.. This school is amazing and is easily my top choice now. The students seemed really nice and the main theme was teamwork and companionship. It's med school so obviously there are gunners, but for the most part everyone seems to work together and help out. They have a facebook page exclusively for questions about lectures/school and they also have a google docs where people upload self-made study guides, old tests, and other useful information. Maybe it's because I haven't interviewed anywhere else yet, but I really, really like this school.

The interview was really laid back and I think I was only asked 6 questions. Everyone had a 1 on 1 except for a few people who had 2 on 1.
They do two tours, one is a student tour (two M1s) around the main building and the other is a campus tour where they drive you around on one of their campus shuttles. Unfortunately I had to miss that part because I had to get to the airport. They told me the interview day ends at 1PM. It really ends at 3PM so plan accordingly.

Also I highly recommend the Plantation Hampton Inn. Their shuttle service (to and from airport and Nova) is great. It's basically like a private car service.. You call, they come. I tipped the driver, but it's totally free otherwise. Rooms are clean (they're renovating the lobby though) and it's right across the street from a mall and a 5-6 minute walk from some places to eat.

Thanks for the feedback!!!!

Do you mind sharing which questions they asked you? Were they file specific or just general "why medicine" "why DO" questions?

was anyone else really nervous during the interview... i was all ready for complex questions, and then they asked me to tell them about myself....duh, duh, duh,

I got a missed call from Nova this afternoon and was so excited about possibly receiving an interview invite, but after I checked this thread, I noticed that everyone got the invite via email. Then, after waiting about 10 minutes on the phone to talk to someone and then a few more minutes after the person went to check my file, she came back to say that they called just to tell me my file is complete and ready for review. Really?!? That's it?? An email would have sufficed.

Did anyone else get a "complete" phone call? I've never heard of this happening before.

We were all asked different questions. I had some application specific ones and then very open ended ones. They were typical ones for me like tell me about yourself and why I was attracted to nova. My interview was short and sweet, not very conversational though but everyone was really nice

So what were those open ended questions like? Any ethics questions?

No ethics questions.

1.Tell me about yourself
2. Tell me about an issue in healthcare that's not the healthcare reform
3. Why NSU
4. Whats the toughest class you've had and how did you deal with it

The rest were application specific for me..basically questions you'd have at almost any interview

I like #2, that's an interesting question!

I am getting super pumped for this interview! Did they tell you how long until you hear a decision?

Does anyone know the interview to acceptance ratio for this school? Posts from 2009 seems overly optimistic.

They told us today that around 4100 apply, they interview 600ish and accept 400ish. They said getting the interview is the hard part.

So you have almost 70% chance of getting accepted! Odds are looking good!

Same questions for me though we did have the same interviewer.. Mine asked me about shadowing and community service as well... they are essentially the high point of my app.

No one said anything today 🙁

Monica said 4-6 weeks. The adcom meets two weeks from today to decide who they want then all interview files, even the ones the adcom chose to reject, goes to the dean for review.. that's usually what delays decisions because he goes over all of them... rarely does he overturn the adcom decision.

Good to know. No wonder it's such a chill interview. I think that as long as you are who uou appear to be on paper you'll get in. There was one guy in our group who was swearing a lot in regular conversation... idk if anyone noticed though.

Sounds promising. 🙂 especially this early in the cycle. Hope for the best for everyone.

OK sounds cool. Hopefully I get the same interviewer as you guys. I AM PUMPED! This is how I felt when the MCAT was coming up "just put that **** in front of me and I will end it!"

Needless to say...I will have to watch myself for swearing...I do it too often!

sigh...Nova admission dept. continues to frustrate me. I called today to ask about the outstanding items email they sent me last week and the lady says that only my transcript is missing. I ask aren't the transcripts only needed if we get accepted and she gets confused and just says no I need to submit it. At this point I was starting to doubt how knowledgeable this lady really was about the whole process. Next, she tell me I have an ii. Obviously this made me really happy as she told me that I just need to wait until I am submitted a ii email. Few mins later I call again to ask someone else about the transcript issue and was informed that I don't need to submit it. Then I ask about the ii and the person I was speaking to says that she can't go and check if I have an ii or not. I tell her that I was told about the ii few mins ago and she says that she really can't confirm or deny if I actually have an ii or not.....Seriously, WTF?!?!😡

i never got a complete email or phone call lol...

This is why I am suspicious that the lady I spoke to on the phone didn't know what my missed call was regarding so she just told me I was complete because that was the only information readily available to her. I highly doubt Nova would call just to tell me I'm complete. Next thing I know, they'll show up at my front door with an interview invite. I don't think so!! Has anyone else ever received a phone call from Nova regarding any other issue??

They called me a week after my ii to ask a question regarding how I entered a study abroad on my primary

phenomenal program!!!! As far as the admissions faculty goes, Anastasia has just taken leave for a few weeks and I don't think it was planned. I believe that this has caused a few hic-ups in the process so I think we should all be patient.

I had two interviewers who were great. Basically asked us the same questions.
1. tell us about yourself and why you want to be a physician?
2. tell us one problem with the current healthcare system and how you would address it?
3. tell us the main characteristic that you would think a physician should have?
etc.
All basic questions that you should be prepared to answer at any interview. It was really relaxing and the medical students were awesome. Facilities, curriculum, and pretty much everything else was awesome. The only problem would be the cost but they have so many perks and fellowships that I don't know if I have too big of a problem with it. Like MedPR has stated, this easily moved up to the top of my list and I will hopefully cancel all of my interviews (all of the allopathic ones) because I was so impressed with the school. Good luck to you all👍

They literally just said " tell me about your community service".

I have a bit of a potty mouth too, but I can control it when I need to. I shadowed 5 different doctors (MD/DO) and basically she asked me to name 3 qualities I saw in all of them. I told her one quality at a time, explained a little, and said why I thought it was important. For community service she quite literally said something like "Tell me about your community service experience. I see here that you did this activity, but what about others?" I don't know if she knew that I had more than just one thing or if she asked everyone that question... She did take a lot of notes though, so I'm hoping that's a good sign.

Just send it from interfolio. I sent it with my LORs.

THANKS! I like the question about the doctors. I shadowed 4 and wrote a secondary about that so I will read it and think about what I wrote before I go 🙂

I wasn't really prepared for that question, but it's not hard to think of three good qualities physicians should have.

You do NOT need your transcript until you are accepted. I was also notified over the phone about an interview invitation, but I was talking to Anastasia. Since she is out for a little bit, I would just wait for the email. I got it a couple days after speaking with her. BTW, congrats!

You were notified by phone? Did they call you first or did you call them to ask about something and then it came up? I'm tempted to call them back tomorrow to ask why they called me today because I don't believe all they wanted to tell me was that I'm complete. I don't want to be annoying though. Maybe I'll just wait for an email like everyone else.

I found out I was complete because I was curious if they received my LORs or not. It took about a week to hear back from them, but they said they had my LORs and that they have the required materials to put me under review. Other than that, I didn't receive anything else about being complete.

Honestly, after hearing two contradicting answers on the phone, I really don't know if I should believe about getting the ii. Anyways, thanks a lot for sharing your experience because I was thinking since I dididn't get any emails from them, I shouldn't expect a ii, but now I know that all hope is not lost. 🙂

I initiated the phone call because I wanted to make sure they had everything they needed to review my file. When she was looking up everything, she notified me that I had been invited but their computer system was down so the email had not been sent out yet. Hang in there.

I don't think they would joke around about you getting an invitation, unless by chance they were looking at someone else's file when speaking with you.

For those who have been recently invited for an interview, in what month are the dates currently available?

As of right now the available dates are 9/11, 10/18, 10/23, 10/25, 11/1, 11/6, 11/8, 11, 15, 11/27, 11/29, 12/6, 12/11, and 12/13.

For what it's worth, the first date available when I got my invite last week was 11/1 but after re-checking this week I was able to reschedule to 9/13. So I wouldn't worry about availability too much.

Smart move, bro. The earlier the better 👍

Thanks! I am going to be in Florida on 9/10 for LECOM interview so getting the 9/11 date would save me a ton of $$, but first they have to send me the ii email, that is if I actually have an invite.

Wow, so all these dates became available when they were not originally when you got the invite. I wonder why people are withdrawing so early in the cycle.

Yeah, I was standing right next to you when you were talking to Monica right before our last tour; which you didn't go on.😉

Good luck to you buddy, hope it all works out for all of us.

Interview Invite this morning! Beyond excited!!! I thought NOVA was silently rejecting me, but it just goes to show that you shouldn't count yourself out! I hope to see some of you soon!

I got a phone call this morning...about gave me a heart attack when the lady said she was from Nova...but then she just went on to tell me they were passing my application along to the director of admissions and gave me a 1-800# w/an extension to call if I should have any questions. Was sort of in shock so didn't really ask her anything...seems very strange to call just to tell me that they are going to review my application.

same thing happened to me...I woke up with a voicemail from nova and called them right away (with my heart beating faster than ever of course, but forgetting that IIs are by email) and the lady I spoke to said my file is being reviewed and they received all the documents, which is weird because they don't have all my LORs yet. The only LOR they have is the DO letter. She proceeded to tell me to keep checking my email for updates.

I also got an II from NOVA this morning. Scheduled it for 9/11, the day after my Bradenton interview. Now I just need to change flights, rental car, and add a hotel night.

One flight from the west coast to and from Florida will be much nicer on my wallet than multiple trips.

Agreed. Brandenton JUST got my secondary today, so I'm worried that if they do invite me for an interview, that I'll have to pay for two trips. =/

complete 7/31

ii this morning via email. HURRAY!

Schedule the NOVA interview out into November, then maybe you can get them back-to-back.

I scheduled my LECOM-B interview more than two weeks ago, and tried to talk to NOVA at that time and they would not look at my application, other than to tell me it was complete (they actually thought that there was only one letter from Interfolio, when there was several).

It is almost nice that the airline charged me to change my flight, but the new flight was cheaper so it was only a net $45 increase to my airline fee. It will cost more for the rental car (an extra day), and another $110 for hotel. This is much cheaper than flying to Florida a second time.

Now I just need to get the extra time off work...

Ah you're lucky. I only see dates from November on. I guess all the earlier ones got snagged up by this batch of invites.
