I posted this on the facebook group, but if you are not in the group, or not accepted yet here is the info as well:

I am bringing a GSP down to Nova and for anyone else who has a dog I found information about all the dog parks and etc. The link below will take you to all the specifics.

http://www.fortlauderdale.gov/cityparks/dogs.htm

I was looking at the budget sheet and noticed that the school listed $8988 for books and supplies. But if we are getting all our textbooks via e-book, do we still need that to spend about that much or even half of that amount?

I don't know the answer to your question, but you still need to buy supplies like a stethoscope and things like that.

It may be in there for federal budget purposes, then you can use it however you need to make ends meet.

One thing that I have noticed is that NSU gives close to $30k above the tuition amount for living expenses and supplies. Other schools are near the $20k mark for the year. It is going to make it difficult to make ends meet at other schools. But it means that the debt load for NSU is greater. 🙁

Beautiful School
Awesome interview

At some point does it even matter? Lol. Also I believe with this school, while it is more expensive than some other schools, you do get a lot for it.

It does matter when my wife/financial expert tells me that we could not live if I went to XXX school, but XXX school gives more loan money so we would be able to eat if we went there...

It decreases the number of schools that are realistic for me to attend. It also makes the decision of where to attend dependent on cost rather than quality of program. Just like everything else, it all boils down to money. 🙁

Yikes. I hear ya. Maybe if there's some way to convince her through using some numbers you brought up? But I see her point too. It's tough with a family. But it's great she's supporting you regardless because the last thing you'll have is time for her and your kid!

I am sooo angry with this school right now. I just got a call inviting me to interview tomorrow. I am in Mississippi, how the hell am I going to get there and be prepared for an interview on such short notice. Is this school really so horribly disorganized that they can't invite people to interview properly. Who the hell does that? This is the ultimate tease. I am withdrawing my application.

You're a Florida resident who just moved to Mississippi a few months ago, right? Call them back and see if they can reschedule you. Obviously they want to interview you and might have thought you were still in Florida, otherwise they would not have called you on such short notice.

It seems aggravating, but it was probably just a misunderstanding. Just sayin.

Nope. While I was on the phone with her I straight up asked if I could reschedule and she said no that this was the only day she was currently scheduling and could not offer any other interview dates at this time. However she did say that " Hopefully they will give you a call when they have something more convenient for you." Also they knew I was in Mississippi because I updated them on this twice. I feel it is reflection of the disorganized nature of the school. They have successfully scared me away.

Look I understand what you're saying but I think you need to understand that once you're in you won't have anything to do with them. That goes for any school. They didn't tell me I had an interview until I called to check my status and that is when I was notified that I had been selected to interview. Although it is less than ideal, it is what it is. I'm here now and I'm loving it.

I wouldn't go as far as saying they knew/remembered that you are in Mississippi simply because you sent them something twice. I'm sorry to hear that they wouldn't accommodate you at this time, but if you had any desire to come here, I would direct you to contact the admissions counselor if you haven't already done so. I'm not sure who you were speaking with when discussing rescheduling, but the admissions counselor would be the best person to speak to regarding your situation and you currently being out of state.

Just some food for thought. I know this process can be extremely aggravating, but hear me out. Once you're in, you're in. No more dealing with admissions people.

I feel for you Chief. LECOM screwed me over last cycle and I have been waitlisted at Touro so I know how messed up things can get applying to schools.

Maybe this just means Nova is not the school for you and there is a school better suited for you out there.

Stay positive and it will come through.

I agree with staying positive, but I totally disagree with the notion that a school is a bad fit simply due to one's interactions with the admissions personnel. Yes, they can be less than helpful at times, and incredibly frustrating as well. However, this should have ZERO play in deciding whether or not a school is a good fit for someone, as the admissions process is the only time you will interact with them in such a manner.

Case in point: Drexel. I had less than stellar interactions with them every time I called to see if they had received something I had sent. Did that change my opinion about the school? Hell no! Why would it? I would never have to deal with them ever again had I started school there.

TBH, if I was in your shoes I would do everything humanly possible to make that interview. It may cost a bunch of money, and it may be inconvenient, but an interview in the hand today is better than the possibility of one in the future.

Probably someone canceled their interview at the last moment and they are scrambling to fill the spot.

When I interviewed at NSU it was because I already had an interview at LECOM-B. I was able to schedule them back to back days. I had to pay to change my flight home. I had to extend my car reservation and return location and drive the three hours across alligator alley. I had to add another hotel stay. But it was all worth it. I went expecting an easy acceptance at LECOM-B. Instead I was wait-listed at LECOM and accepted at NSU. Right now I am OK with that.

TL;DR It cost me a lot of money to go to my NSU interview, but I was accepted. That makes it worth it.

I hear and understand what you are saying however i disagree. I feel the problem in admission maybe a symptom of a larger administrative problem and them I will have to deal with. Interviews are a serious matter not to be taken lightly. They are time consuming and expensive for both the student and the school and it really is a red flag if a school can not organize this in a professional manner. Hey I am glad that Nova is working out great for you but I really dont want to be that guy that Nova doesnt workout for. Believe me I understand medical school is a huge investment in my future and i want to make sure all of the ducks are in a row for the school that I choose to go to. Maybe you are correct and the admissions is no reflection of the school itself but it is just something i can not ignore. It really bothered me.

Have you been accepted to any medical schools? If you haven't, I think you should go even if it's painfully inconvenient and expensive.

I hear your pain, but seriously, they were probably calling the next person on their list when they found that someone cancelled an interview. Their interview has been full since I think August for months. Many many people who they were interested weren't interviewed becaues they had full interview schedule. They have thousands of app so I don't think they have to time to make it to their interview. If you say no, they will just call the next person on the list.Yeah, it's a little barbaric system, but that's what the market is like. See it this way, Let's say you get into Harvard the day before your NSU interview. Wouldn't you just call and cancel the interview? Now who is screwed?

I really don't think this says anything about NSU. Many many schools I am sure do this all the time. I only had positive experience at NSU. They are always there when I call, they answered all my questions, and I got my responses on time.

Honestly, I think you might need to shift your expectations of medical school employees. I have yet to interact with an administration that doesn't have its problems. Hell, Nova misspelled my name of my acceptance letter and envelope but I was not going to let that stop me.

Agreed, this may be a result as of someone cancelling on them last minute.. It helps to have a different perspective.

This. You don't have the "luxury" of ranking schools yet, and its getting well into the cycle at this point.

Also accepted to Western U COMP-NW and waiting to hear back from my state school before the end of November (I hope). I am only going to pay one deposit so I will make my choice before the middle of December.

Yes, but I have not declined at KCUMB or LECOM even though I have decided not to go there. I keep on waiting for something to go wrong and needing another option.

You can take as much or as little as you need - some of it will be federal, some of it will be private (if you need that much). You can change your mind year by year. You can also decline some of what you're awarded if you decide you don't need all of it.

when you say pvt you mean grad plus right?, i thought the federal and grad plus should be able to cover it all... no?

Interview here tomorrow. Any tips guys?

Leave your hotel with about an hour to find your way there. It took me 40 minutes to drive the "10 minutes" from the hotel to the school. I left early enough that I was not late.

Other than that, have fun. talk to the interviewers like they are people, and like you have interesting things to tell them. Don't be cocky, but be confident.

The simulation lab is kinda neat. I did see a better one in Phoenix, but it beats the one that I saw at some other schools.

Really? I stayed at the Hampton Inn and it took about 10min or less for the shuttle to get to the school.

It will not be an easy decision. The difference is between familiar and safe (in Oregon), and new and adventurous (Florida).

The biggest deciding factor is if I get an acceptance at my state school, which is not likely, they play the "put most people on hold until March, then dole out the wait list numbers" game. 🙁 I will hear back an initial decision from my interview later this month or in early December. Hopefully before the deposits are due for Nova and Western.

My wife gets a vote. If you would have asked her a month ago, she would have been all gung-ho to move to "sunny and warm," now she is a little more wary of snakes and alligators. It is almost as irrational as her fear of shark attacks. I think she is starting to lean away from moving to Florida.

All the schools where I applied are quality schools. All the schools where I interviewed were in my top 5 to begin with. I would be fine with attending any of them if it was the only school where I was offered a spot. Now it is difficult to decide which. (I know, first world problem!)

As far as my decision to choose Nova over the other schools, I am confident I will succeed there. The only reason I would not choose to go there was if Florida fell off the face of the Earth.

I paid the deposit not in advance but when I was able to do so. I can't see anything changing.
Perhaps I don't know what you mean.

Hey guys-
Interviewed yesterday and was just wondering where you access the "portal" to view your status on decisions? Is it simply the webstar?

I don't think I received the admission decision through webstar. It was through email.

Well the shark attack is definitely understandable. Just last month a college surfer was killed off of santa barbara coast by a ten foot shark. Shutters...
