Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Where did you get accepted?
Currently i have no acceptances and I know withdrawing from schools is a no no when you have no acceptance but I am not going to go to this school. It is my judgement that this school would equal four years of discomfort and unhappiness. I just got tired of Nova. I should have never applied to this school from the beginning and now that is fixed. It drives me nuts when people get accepted to schools they dont want to go to and then reapply. I have prevented that now. I hate this school. Withdrawing was a smart choice.

Withdrawing my acceptance because of an acceptance at a school that suited me better. Best of luck to everyone in this cycle!

Congrats on the second acceptance! Did your best friend get in there too? If so good luck to the both of you!

Did anyone on sdn interview here today? Just wanted to know what you thought without having people eavesdropping or judging every move.

I enjoyed it a lot. The interviewers were very stoic which annoyed me because I couldn't tell if they liked my answers or not. The tour guides were exceptionally helpful and very knowledgable.

Now I wait until the 21st. Very fast turn around time for this late in the cycle.

At least you're leaving a spot open for someone who does want to attend! I would like to give you some advice, but it would be entirely unsolicited so I will just say good luck to you! Me? I would have walked to this school for an acceptance lol.

Thanks a lot! And yes, he did also so we'll either be going to KCUMB or SOMA (waiting to hear from SOMA, then a REALLY tough decision if accepted)

when you say pvt you mean grad plus right?, i thought the federal and grad plus should be able to cover it all... no?

Yep federal + grad plus will cover all of it. I meant some people don't take some or all of the grad plus portion if they don't feel like they need it.

Does anyone know if Nova sends "complete" emails? I submitted my secondary for them on 09/06, and my MCAT score was released on 09/18. I know some schools take a while to process the incoming applications. However, Nova has had all of my info for over 7 weeks now, so I'm just a bit puzzled. If I'm already "complete" and just don't know it, then this would make a bit more sense to me.

How much federal do you get with this school?

Check your online account and see if they have everything. I also sent an email a couple of weeks after I submitted and then responded that my application is complete and my status is "pending." Ugh.

Ok that's a good idea, I'm gonna go ahead and email them. Thanks for the response and Good Luck!!

Ok. That's without the grad plus right?

No with. Grad plus is still a federal loan. The stanfford limit is around 42k a year

so for the 3rd year, the website says that you have to do 2 months of surgery rotations. Are they both gen surgery or can one of them be in special surgery?

also, anyone know why NSU makes you do two months of Pediatrics instead of just one like all the other schools?

Thank you

I was complete at the beginning of October, when I called for an update they said I should expect to be under review until mid-Nov. Call them?

6-8 weeks of peds is pretty standard as far as I know.

Anyone have NSU's demographic breakdown of by race/ethnicity, sex/gender and geographical region?

Thanks

the best i could find was 2009-2010: mean age = 24.4, median age = 23. it's always somewhere around there. the range probably varies a lot, especially with non-trad applicants

Does anyone know when incoming students usually start looking for housing in the area? And does anyone know some good places to check out?

Can someone explain to me about having to do TRI for the first year residency if you want to practice in florida? What's this all about?

No they meet today... we find out sometime between now and the 21st

Great. Now I get that excitement every time I get an e-mail on my phone hoping it's them. Less than a week to go! I love this school.

I interviewed on November 8th and received my acceptance email yesterday. You should be getting one soon if you haven't already.

Oh ok. Nice. Congrats! Mind giving your stats/ECs? Can PM if you want. Also what letter does your last name start with? Lol. Maybe they're going in a certain order! But I think they call if waitlisted and I wasn't called yet 🙂

I think the way it works is that some states (Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oklahoma) require an osteopathic intern year to be licensed as a DO. If you do an osteopathic residency, that counts, so you don't have to worry about it. If you do an ACGME residency that is advanced (starts in year 2), you could do an osteopathic intern year and knock both requirements (some sort of intern year program and an osteopathic internship) out at once. If you do an ACGME residency that includes the intern year, then you have an issue.

The way people in the third category have gotten around this previously is called resolution 42 or something like that - I think on SDN (and possibly elsewhere) they call it the loophole. You can basically fill out paperwork - I've heard it's more or less annoying to go through depending on which state you're talking about, but I don't know details.

But again, this is only something to be worried about if you 1) plan to practice in one of those 4 or 5 states after residency and 2) end up doing an ACGME residency. Also I think that you can be licensed through the MD or DO boards depending on your residency, so it may be possible that DO students who do ACGME residencies then go get licensed by allopathic boards and never worry about being licensed by their osteopathic state boards in the first place. I'm not too clear on this yet but it's something program directors at dual-accredited programs were talking about - the expense of choosing to remain licensed by two sets of boards.

Of course no one knows how the merger will affect all of this, so it's probably not something for you guys to be worried about at all.

tl;dr - You don't have to do a TRI if you don't want to (unless you don't match and you're taking what you can get)

thank you so much thisland. i bow to your fingers 🙂

Thank you! Nope not one of the twins...you mean the asian girl with blonde hair? Too much maintenance for me...

Was just trying to place who you were. But yes, that is who I was thinking of. I interviewed the same day but still haven't heard from nova yet.

🙁

Here are my stats: MCAT: 25P GPA 3.55 Science GPA 3.6
Last name starts with C.
Good luck!

Congrats! This just made me so nervous though, I interviewed on 11/6 and haven't heard anything from them yet...

How successful is NOVA-COM in placing students in residencies?

I think they do well. Every DO school sends a couple students to top programs, I think NSU does that and additionally sends a good amount to other recognized programs i.e. top 50 on US News and World Reports. I put it on par with KCUMB from my research of the past decade. I will say in 2005 NSU sent 4 people to Northwestern for IM and another for pathology, which is one of the places at which I would hope to train.

I think however it is more a question of how dedicated you are to matching at a specific program more than the school's responsibility to match you.

I feel NSU will give me the opportunity to excel. Game on.

I interviewed at NSU yesterday and was a bit skeptical going in (I had A LOT of confusion regarding my application and interview invites). I can honestly say that it is a very impressive school with so much to offer to any potential student. I have had the opportunity to interview at a good number of schools, and nova was my favorite thus far. For those of you who are unsure whether to attend an interview here, I would strongly encourage it.

NSU-COM places almost all of their students in residency no problem. A few each year don't match (for whatever reason), but they are associated with a LOT of residencies in FL which would likely help anyone in the class out.

Just to clarify, there are 14 who did not match last year. And also to inject some realities, nsu does assign 3 rural rotations randomly starting from july? of your forth year which means they can land during the prime time for auditioning or interviewing for residency.

Question: My primary app was just released to Nova. I've already received secondaries to most schools -- how long does the secondary usually take to come in? Thanks!

I got my secondary less than a day after my primary app was released.
