Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got a call from Nova on Sept. 9 saying I was complete and was ready to be reviewed. It's now 2.5 weeks later. How long have others waited before being offered an interview?

And if someone is NOT offered an interview, do they send you an email saying you've been waitlisted/rejected or is there just silence?

😕

It a month between my call and the interview invite. I also submitted super early.

If you're not offered an interview now, it will be silence until the II or until May. Good luck!

I got an email inviting me to the open house today, I thought it was an interview. What a bummer

I'm anxious to see the outcomes of the recent interviews.

Good luck to all of you!

lol same here...my heart rate went up when I saw it.

BTW did everyone get a call that said they were complete.. I only got two separate emails...one that said my secondaries were received and the other one said my LOR were received.

I don't even want to know...if they all get accepted it'll be a big hit to the self-confidence...

Well, if they all get accepted then I'm happy for them and I'll know it's the end of the road for me at Nova.

If the WL trend continues, then I sense a mass WL movement within the next few weeks. They may start pulling people off the WL as they enlist others. Just speculations.

Do you think we would know tomorrow or in a couple weeks to group notifications of interview days?

Why would they waitlist you, then turn around and accept you in 1 month? For most schools waitlistees aren't pulled until towards the end of the cycle.

I was interviewed on 9/10 and got my decision email on 9/20. Furthermore, people who were interviewed on 9/12 also got their email on 9/20. It took only 8 days for them to know.

Tomorrow, 8 days will have passed since your interview (Sept 19). There's a chance you will know tomorrow.

Well thats the thing. We might be being optimistic, but it seems like NSU wants to waitlist most people and then once they interviewed almost everyone they can start handing out acceptances.

I doubt the turnaround for waitlist -> acceptance will be as soon as a month or two and probably won't happen until after January. While people can debate that many will get other acceptances and shrug nova off, I doubt that'll be the case since it looks like NSU might be giving late applications a chance this year. NSU attracts a lot of high stat applicants because of its location and affiliations with the area so while SDN might not consider it an elite tier school in the DO world, it's applicant pool will beg to differ.

I still think most people here have a chance of nabbing an acceptance. Just have to be patient.

Could be something different this cycle ... As he said, if the WL trend continues they won't have many people accepted.

On the same note the end of August people had to wait till the 20th too. Either way, you'll know soon

I dunno. I was speculating, nothing more. Besides, what you are talking about is a scenario when a school accepts 70% of the interviewees and waitlists the others. Here, the situation is the opposite. If they keep waitlisting 70-80% of the people until the end of the cycle, they will end up with a WL of 500+ applicants and only ~100 acceptances of which half will end up going somewhere else.

I believe that the school will start calling us ( WL) in October or December and see if we whether we are still interested in the school.

Everything is speculation at this point. Last year had very little WL movement, so we cannot compare this year to any others.

With that said, I hope you're right 🙂

They should have not said "rolling admission basis" on their website. The school is not being ethical with their statement

maybe it's a way for them to see who really wants to go to this school

+1. I received a call notifying me.

i got the phone call that said i was complete but could not answer the phone and the lady left a voicemail just letting me know that my application was complete. anyone think it's a bad thing that i didn't call back?

I didn't, and in the message I think it says unless you have a specific question its not necessary to call back.

If Nova is not an elite tier school in the DO world, I don't know which school is.

Well from what I've read around here, it isn't seen by some as the same caliber as TCOM, CCOM, PCOM and such. I disagree just like you, but I always think that ranking DO schools is a waste of time and stupid.

This. Everybody has preferences and some places work better for others. End of the day the only thing that makes a school worth it is the work you put in. Rotations and curriculum only work if you do your part. So I guess you have to realize is when all is said and done, it only takes one. They will all help you get to your goal as long as you want it bad enough.

Wow, Nova just gained many many I mean billions of spots in my book. That research thing, where can I learn more about it? That's freaking FANTASTIC. Wow!!!! And now Nova might have their own affiliated hospital? That's even better news too! 100 beds is small, but there is room for expansion. The really cool part will be for 3rd and 4th year (if I understand this correctly).

Also, I think it's very silly to say "The goal is to produce Primary Care Physicians." Med Schools aren't factories. They have a brand. Nova took 500 steps forward by trying to open their own hospital in terms of branding. The goal is to advance the brand, and the way you do that is by having a stellar reputation.

You draft a proposal with a faculty mentor and submit it for the research grant. Grant is usually between $500 and $1,000. If you win, M3 and M4 are paid for, as well as some other perks as long as you are able to meet the requirements of the program.

My current understanding is that Nova is not opening their "own" hospital. HCA and Nova are definitely talking because HCA wants to build it on our campus. I'm sure that's what you meant, just wanted to clear the air with what we were told in an email. Plus they've been having people go around campus trying to get HPD students to sign something in support of it. I'm curious to see their proposed timeline of events.

I got an email the other day inviting me to their fall open house. Did everyone receive that email? And do you think I should attend it?

Yes, and only if you don't have to fork out significant cash for travel.

If you don't live within a car drive then I wouldn't.

I'm curious how long is their maximum period for not responding to an applicant...?
I've been sitting in limbo for a solid like 2 months now...

Well i will be down there for LECOM but my aunt lives in orlando so I am planning on visiting her already so it shouldn't cost me any money at all.

Tampa and Orlando are not particularly close to Fort Lauderdale.... I wouldn't suffer through the 4 hour drive just to go to their open house.

Based on my Googling, it seems as if Nova will have their own teaching hospital, which I think is fantastic

are interview invites via email?

i think i put the last four of my phone number as a extension in the secondary and so i wanted to check to make sure interview invites are via email

I suggest you do more research on osteopathic medicine and what it entails. Cheer 🙂

If someone can get in with a 24 obviously a 26 is possible too. I got in with a 25. Once again tho, it takes some stellar ECs and a solid GPA to have a shot.

Last year, right?

I'm asking because I know people with higher MCAT scores and solid GPA who weren't even invited. Their EC's are good too.

Yeah.

This whole process is random. Each school looks for something different in their apps. I know people who had schools as safety schools and got into PCOMPa and didn't get interviews at LMU, LECOM, etc.

You never know what's gunna happen and everyone looks for something different in their applicants.

I interviewed this past thursday with a 26 and 3.5 gpa

I agree.
