Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also waitlisted. 3.7c/3.6s/29, research and 2000+ community service (but OOS). Already been accepted other places, will be curious to see if an explanation comes out. Interviewed 9/12. Good luck guys!

Yeah I think I know who you are as well! Thanks!!! I'm really surprised by the amount of waitlists this cycle. I'm sure you will be fine! Good luck with all your other interviews 🙂

Congrats! Are you the woman who went to NSU for undergrad?

Wondering if anyone has received their letter regarding yesterday's decision?

I'm still in denial.

so isn't waitlisting this many people bad for nova? wouldnt the people who got waitlisted choose other schools instead now? Im assuming people who already interviewed are at the cream of the crop in terms of applications

Yeah the lottery feel of the alternate list is disconcerting. And I'm only applying to DO schools with a cgpa 3.65 sgpa 3.55 and 28 mcat so is be borderline for sine md schools. Would hate to learn that the assumption of losing out to md schools is keeping well qualified people that want to go to nsu from spots. On a happier note many many congratulations to those that got in! So stoked for you guys!

I hope not either. But I know a lot they interviewed already are qualified for/have applied to both MD and DO. Yet most have been wait listed (including those going for MD). They might just be trying to slow down to give more applicants a shot to be interviewed instead of accepting a ton all at once.

For those waitlisted, including myself potentially, I would expect movement as more people are interviewed and look forward to upcoming interviews.

Focus everyone!! 🙂

I really hope this week isn't a bad omen for my application season. Getting a phone call to pull me of the WL will be such an amazing experience. We've all worked so hard to get to this point.

Yes I agree with you. Just focus on your other schools for now and I'm sure something good will come out of it.

Yeah that would be me! I'm glad you guys remember me lol
Did you get a decision yet?

Now I also remember you! That NSU bit helped jog my memory, congrats! I was also one of the bad kids that were banished to the chairs away from the conference tables haha.

Perhaps, the is the most plausible explanation. From their point of view, it may seem pointless to continue interviewing until May of next year while their class has been 90% filled.

Unless I misunderstood the waitlist email, stats don't matter at this point. It said that they are selecting students randomly from the alternate list.

Yup, that is what it said. This could work in favor of those with lower-than-average stats, but it could also hurt some of the 3.5+/30+ applicants.

It's all speculations at this point. This has no precedence. All I hope for is that, somehow, I get an email within the next two weeks starting off with "Congratulations..."

:naughty:

Does nova give any love for those that have extensive research experience?

Research is nice, but that's not the goal of DO schools. The goal is to produce primary care physicians.

Has anyone been flat out rejected? That's odd to me...are they just going to waitlist anyone they don't want to admit? I'm trying to understand their pov but for me I loved NSU but I can't afford multiple deposits so if DMU or someone else accepts me I'm going to have to put in the deposit and drop Nova if I don't hear by December. Hopefully many of us will know by then.

I was wondering the same thing...I haven't heard of any rejections. But then again, I don't think many people would like to post that.

This is weird and disconcerting, I thought 600 interviews -> 400 accepted -> ~230ish in class, it doesn't add up... I thought it had close to 67% acceptance post interview.

I don't think waitlist is stats driven, but they seem to be looking for something in applicants.

Do you have a reference for this? NOVA has a few DOs on campus performing research and they just built a 5 million dollar neuroscience facility.

This. Some people need to realize that NOVA isn't a back-up MD school. They are a top DO school and they are looking for students who fit their program.

This. Too many people with good stats were WL'd. They must've been looking for something in particular. I don't know what it was.

This is the same thing I have been thinking, there doesn't seem to be any numbers trend with those who have been accepted vs. those waitlisted. I have a hunch they are looking for something in particular. For instance, I was accepted and I have a few things in my background that make me a little different than a lot of applicants (I lived in foreign countries for a total of 4 years, military service, fluent in a second language, etc.).

I have a buddy who was also accepted and he has lived in a foreign country for 2 years and also speaks a second language. It's just an idea, but maybe they are looking for some kind of diverse/unique experience in your background. I know another accepted applicant has owned their own business. Another one on this thread that was accepted (I won't name him/her) worked in engineering designing medical prosthetics and actually ran into a member of the faculty on the interview day that was using one of her/his companies products.

So yeah maybe they are just looking for applicants of a particular background right now, that seems to be the most plausible explanation for all of these waitlists. After doing a few interviews, I can definitely see that each school looks for something a little different beyond just the numbers. So I bet all of those waitlists are going to be acceptances somewhere, just maybe not Nova at this time. Good luck to everyone and keep at it!

I'm sure you'll find a few doing research, but it's nothing compared to MD schools. My interviewer told me straight up to not come to NSU-COM if I wanted to do research. I'm an OMS 1 here and I've never heard of that 5 million dollar research facility.

PS. I personally don't know how anyone would have time to do research unless they take a gap year during med school - classes are too time consuming.

Agree. NSU WL'd too many people with good stats. Those applicants would be offered acceptances form other DO and/or MD schools and would not be waiting for the second decision on or before August 2014. At the end NSU is going to loose applicants with good stats.

I think one of the exciting things about Nova to me was the chance to do that one year fellowship in research. I'm pretty sure that it is very competitive to get into though.

Might be time to change Pre-Medical -> Medical Student 😉

Lived abroad two years. Bilingual. High stats and good ec's... Waitlisted.

Just to add to this,

I was born in a third world country, them moved and lived in another third world country before immigrating to the US. Speak, read and write fluently in another language. Owned a and operated a wholesale and a retail business. Worked a wide array of jobs ranging from fast food restaurants to clinical laboratories. Married and have a kid. And many more things that make me a well rounded applicant. My stats were average too. Got the WL.

After my interview I was very confident I will be accepted. My interviewers liked me and I showed genuine interest in the school. Heck, I even looked up apartments and elementary schools in the area and started planning on moving as soon as the beginning of next year.

Yeah I don't know guys, I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Well.... reading all these posts is disconcerting lol

Sooo if the acceptance number is around 400. And the class size is 250..

Does that mean, as a waitlister, I need >150 people to decline the acceptance? Oh and win the luck of the draw against all the other wait listers as well. Or is that 400 including wait list movement? Meh. Long weekend.

I was told during my interview that they do have lots of research. I was told that after your first two years, you could take a gap year to do research and that the year of research and OMS year 3 and 4 tuition would NOT have to be paid by you, so I guess they would gave you a scholarship. Please tell me this is the truth.

Did you interview on the 29th? Your story just rang a bell.

I interviewed here recently and they talked about this also, but said that the research fellowship is very competitive. There are only 6 spots and they had 21 applicants recently.

The tuition for the 3rd and 4th year would also be waived if you do the OPP fellowship, which only has 2 spots per year. I don't know how competitive this program is.

So are we supposed to tell Nova our intent in a certain number of days or do we just wait until they ask for a deposit in December?

The last I heard this was the case and by that I mean when I interviewed last year. They are building a research facility they've brought this up a few times to us (OM1s) this year already but I honestly any tell you the status on it. We also have a research club which brings presenters in, allows you to present your own research and gives you the contacts of people currently conducting research that you can talk to if you'd like to be involved. If you are into research there are opportunities here for you to do that it just takes some effort.

Did anyone get two WL emails? Just got another one this morning. Thanks for reminding me again Nova!

While it is true that they might be looking for a diverse backgrounds, schools also have to maintain a certain set of criteria like age, gender, stats year to year. Another thing someone pointed out was if they want to accept so few applicants per interview, they would have to interview a ridiculously high number of applicants which I just don't think a school would have time for that.

And for what it's worth, I come a diverse background and speak 3 languages fluently as well 🙂 Congrats to those who were accepted this far, hope to
Join you!
