Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on that great GPA. I'm hoping to do really well.. Haven't did so good in the past but definitely turning it around.
Did you apply early? I interviewed around September and got accepted around november. I was really nervous about getting in because of my MCAT score.

I haven't applied yet, still a year out. Need major GPA repair. Also, need to hunker down and beat the MCAT.

I don't know what your GPA is, but if you can score above a 30 I think it will balance out a little bit. I think others with a 3.4 and a good MCAT score have gotten in. Also, try to get your primary application as soon as possible because Nova has no secondary application essay.

Hello everyone, I was wondering what people's stats were? Currently this is my dream school, and definitely want to try to fit their standards.
My AACOMAS cGPA and sGPA is 3.5 and 3.7, respectively. I sat for the MCAT once and earned a score of 28. Get your GPAs close to 3.5 and MCAT equal to or greater than 28 to maximize your chances.

I remember this time last year, NSU-COM was my #1 choice, and I was paranoid that I wasn't going to be good enough. My friend who applied last cycle got an ii from Nova but he declined, and I was thinking "Wtf, you crazy?? I would kill for an ii there."

Last March, I went to a psychic. Me and my friends were on our way to a club, but decided it would be fun to see a psychic because we were drunk and also because we never seen one before. I asked the lady if I was ever going to medical school. She told me I would be flying down to Florida later that year (and obviously I did). She also told me specific dates of when I would received invites from two schools on 8/10 and 10/3 (yes, I did get ii from schools on the dates she said!!). She knew all of this months in advance. Coincidence or fate? Who knows.

When I got an ii from LECOM-B, I was kinda upset, because in my mind I was thinking "this is the Florida school the psychic meant." When I really wanted it to be from Nova.
When the first batch of interviews came out from Nova (according to SDN), I was so angry I didn't get an ii. I remember being so mad that I was about to withdraw my app from the school, because I was hurt that I wasn't good enough. But then I got an ii a week later and I was happy lol.

My interview day was amazing. I remember being in awe by the campus, but trying not to get too attached just in case I didn't get accepted. I stayed the weekend in Miami and had a blast. I partied and even fell in love. I loved everything about FLL and MIA, but was trying not to get too attached just in case I didn't get accepted. I also applied to FIU, but that's pretty much a silent rejection at this point.

I didn't get my acceptance from NSUCOM until 2 months after my interview day. Those 60 days were full of torment and despair. I wrote 2-3 letters of intent, and I called every week. Everyday I lost a little bit of hope, because I saw other kids on SDN getting accepted who interviewed weeks after I did.

I then went to a different psychic who asked me if I applied to schools in certain states (including Florida), and all were correct. He then said I would get accepted to some school somewhere in the Southern United States....(and Nova is the only southern school I interviewed at). Crazy how things worked out. I saw this psychic last December (Monday the 16th). I was officially accepted to NSU-COM later that Friday...and the letter from the Dean was dated....Dec. 16th!! Freaky. I swear all of this is true.

I just wanted to share my application journey. For me it was definitely interesting, and those two psychics I saw will forever be in my mind. I'm glad I got into my #1 choice school. I loved my pre-med journey, and I'm thankful for the support of my family and friends. I can't wait to start the next chapter of my life: the beginning of my career. 🙂

Congrats, man. Victory must be really sweet after all this mental torment. But seriously, what are you doing on SDN on a Saturday night..go party and celebrate care-free post-premed life! Or is it still too cold up in NJ?

Please don't be upset but I lol'd at this story. I'm sitting in a cafe in Union Square just lolling, lol.

Also, is this bad? I'm doing literally zero preparation for medical school. Instead I'm working on my Web Programming skills and freelance web developing. How bad is this somebody tell me. What do I do

The only thing I'm worried about is housing and financial aid. I don't know where I want to live, but I'm also picky and I don't want to live like I did during my undergrad years.

If we have learned anything from the story, you should go see a psychic.

lol I'm not saying I believe in psychics but I have to admit they were freakishly accurate. I only went when I was out drunk with friends. Figured.. Hey why not. Lol🙄

LOL I have to go see a psychic sometime soon.

They are known to be somewhat accurate like saying vaguely where you'll go to med school. But to be able to tell the exact dates of your iis is just ridiculous.

I'm going to see a psychic to ask some stuff about my medical career and life in general 😛

I was selected as an alternate, does anybody know what my chances are of getting accepted at this point?

I interviewed and was told I could go onto WebStar to check my status, but the only page I can access is the "Admissions" page that lets me see a very brief summary of the secondary I submitted. I tried the "Enter Secure Area" but the UserID/PIN I use to get into the Admissions page doesn't work. I have also tried the NSU ID I was given to no avail. When I try to retrieve my NSU ID/PIN and it asks for my SS# and date of birth it tells me I have no record. What's the deal?

You only get access to the secure area after admission

A ton of people were wait listed this year so I bet there will be a lot of movement. On the accepted student Facebook page there are only 130 members some of which are current students so I wouldn't give up hope. Hang in there this whole process is really stressful.

I have been accepted and paid my acceptance fee. Can anyone tell me what I should be doing next as far as registration goes?

From what the M1s have said just wait till like March or so for paper work for the physical and background check and then early summer will get more info on registration and start date. Also if your applying for fin aid get your fasfa in.

What are some of the popular/competitive rotation sites that Nova offers? Is Mount Sinai and Jackson Memorial the top two?

If a ton of people were wait listed then won't that mean that a lot of people will not get taken off the list? Or do you mean more people were wait listed than actually accepted?

I have a similar question... how can I check financial aid and so forth if I already completed my FAFSA? In other words, how can we know how much financial aid we are being offered?

You go to Webstar. But NSU hasn't downloaded the 2014-2015 FAFSA year yet. They said they will soon.

Got officially rejected from FIU. It's been a long run, but I'm glad NSU will be my new home 🙂

Officially rejected from FIU, too.Really hope tomorrow's interview at Nova will go well...

Good luck!! All the best 🙂

Yeah my whole life goal is to stay in the Miami Dade area, so I'm glad Nova accepted me. Coming from New England , my Dad thinks Florida is a dumb state. But I think SoFlo is an exception 😉

Thank you!!! I know, I only applied to several South Florida schools because I really want to stay here. I like it here a lot. I am originally from Europe, and the only place I lived in the US was Florida, so I wouldn't know how it is elsewhere)

Yeah I am definitely an East Coast person...the world revolves around Eastern Time 😉

In the beginning of the cycle more people seemed to be waitlisted than accepted. So in my opinion there should be some waitlist movement. Plus the second round of deposits are due in march so that will confirm who really is accepting. I m not certain how they pull people off the waitlist but it can't hurt to keep updating the school of your interest.

I had an interview today, and I am really impressed with Nova! I wanted to go there in the first place, but now I really want to become a shark. They make you feel like home, and the interview was so relaxed and pleasant. The Dean is so passionate about what he is doing, his school and the students!!!

Hey current students I was curious what anatomy dissector is used at Nova. I was hoping to pick it up for some review. I know everyone says not to pre-study, but I've got a lot of time before school starts and if I spend just an hour a day I think it could be beneficial.

We used Grant's. Since it is a dissector, a bulk of the book explains how to dissect muscles/vessels/nerves assuming that you're working on a cadaver. It might be hard to visualize how everything fits together with the 2-D cartoon drawings in the book. If you insist on pre-studying for anatomy (lab), I suggest watching Acland's anatomy videos instead of reading the dissector. They're old, but he uses real dissections and explains the relationships of the structures very well. They actually helped a lot for the lab portion. I remember there were some tagged structures during lab practicals that I wouldn't have gotten correct if I hadn't seen it in Acland. If you're more of a visual person, it's a great resource.

I second the Acland videos. You only really need one Grant's per group and you're not going to want to keep it after gross lab is over. If you must pre-study then by all means, but you can always just wait and split the book with your tankmates.

Does anyone know if a laptop or tablet or any is included in the tuition?

Does anyone know if a laptop or tablet or any is included in the tuition?

Not to my knowledge. Current M1s were required to purchase ipads, so unless they've changed the policy to it being included in tuition, you're expected to purchase those items on your own.

Is the area bike friendly? I was thinking about living 2-3 miles away at viera plantation/plantation gardens or summerlake apartments nd just wanted to know if anyone else commutes by bike. With the gorgeous weather year round I would imagine it beats sliding around in the snow and ice at negative temps here. Anyone gotten anything in their sharkmail yet?

Don't forget it also rains. You don't want to ride a bike in the rain for 3 miles do you? Lol. But nope nothing in my shark mail or shark link for that matter

I wrote 2-3 letters of intent, and I called every week.

Chillywilly, did the content of your letters of intent change much each time you wrote them?
What did you say in each phone call? Didn't it get repetitive?

I like your strategy but I'd have no idea what to say! haha

The first letter I wrote was about how
I would make a great fit for nova and how nova is a great fit
For me. Then I explained how my dream is to live in Miami Dade county.

My second letter was just an update on my activities and how those activities
Relate to their mission statement.

I don't think I wrote a third but I had my supervisor write me a letter.

I cannot stress enough how people need to convince their schools that they relate to the schools mission statement and values. And also what they will gain from attending the school. Good
Luck!

I submitted my secondary to Nova back in November and have yet to hear anything back from them.... Anyone else in a similar situation?
