Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted my secondary to Nova back in November and have yet to hear anything back from them.... Anyone else in a similar situation?

I submitted mine in July and didn't receive an interview until January. I'm still waiting on a decision and currently losing my mind. I've come to the conclusion that there is no pattern or way to anticipate what Nova is going to do. Hang in there and good luck to you and the others waiting.

Has anyone submitted their FAFSA yet? I just want to make sure I filled out everything properly to qualify for the most money I can. Did people enter their parents information? I know FAFSA said it's helpful (esp. if you're applying to health profession), but does anyone know if NSU specifically requires it? I couldn't find it on their FinAid website.

Submitted in mid August... haven't heard a thing yet.

For graduate programs, you are considered independent.

Also submitted mine in November... Not so much as a peep.

Oh well.

Oh well, I didn't want to pay 50,000+ a year anyways.

Unless you applied to LECOM or one of those Texas schools, I'm not too sure of other med schools where you wouldn't be paying $50k+ a year.

How does Nova communicate acceptances/waitlists? Email? Thanks!

Another week passed and no luck. They are definitely pushing their 4 week window they gave us on the 28th.

Last week during the interview the counselor mentioned that the admission committee meets in two weeks, so hopefully you will hear some news next week.

What is Sharkpass and why do I keep getting an email about it everyday and what do I do

I'm not exactly sure what Sharkpass is, but it's just a place to created a unified password system (or so I think). Just go to the Sharklink webpage and at the bottom of the page should be a link to Sharkpass. You just need to register and create a bunch of security questions. Weird, but it's something that you need to do apparently.

Has anyone been outright rejected from Nova pre-interview?? Also, when do they stop interviewing??? I am curious because I have been complete since September and have not heard a single thing... If people have been rejected I guess that gives a little bit of hope thinking maybe I am still in the consideration pile. Anyway, it would be great if anyone can help me out with this because I know some schools do not reject people often until the cycle is over!

Anybody found apartments? How is Sunforest compared to Palm Trace, things along this nature? Can I leave for 3 months to go abroad, come back mid-June and find a decent apartment. Things like that

No, Nova does not reject pre-interview. You either interview and then get a response or don't hear anything until the cycle is over.

Ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. Do you know how late they interview until?

Not sure until when they interviewed last year, but it really doesn't matter. This cycle has been different than last year all along due to personnel and other changes. But I heard from a reliable source that interviews would continue into late spring.

This may have been addressed already, but to where or whom should one send an update letter or letter of interest?

I went 2 weeks ago to check out the area and saw the Signature and the Palm Trace apts. Signature was all full, with no idea when they would have vacancies, brand new, nice pool, huge dog park, but kinda old looking in terms of set up, design etc for the money they are asking for... they also told me they take DNA sample of dogs and check the poop left on the grass against their database... which sounds over the top to me and I can only guess what else is on the contract. Palm Trace is next door, cheaper at a first glance but with a lot of hidden fees, it has several basketball courts, tennis courts, 3 gyms, 3 pools, outdoor grilling areas etc. It also has several swamp-kind of lakes in between buildings and most of the balconies have screens all around. Location-wise is great but I found out that there is a pretty big mosquito problem several months out of the year, due to the swamps (hence the screens) and feral cats and raccoon rummaging through garbage cans all over the place which for me was a deal-breaker but for someone else could be OK.

About Sunforest- someone had mentioned earlier that it has a hx of burglaries and break ins so I didn't check it out.

It seems like living on campus will be a good bet for someone like me from OOS who can't check out the places beforehand.

Can someone who recently received interview invite post the dates they are scheduling at this time?

This is a really informative post. How did you go about obtaining this information? I have an Aunt that lives in this area... I have like a 25% chance of going abroad for 3-4 months so before I do this I need to go down and settle into an apartment (I think). What kind of hidden fees did you discover through Palm Trace? Where can I go to find out information about on-campus apartments? Man I feel rushed but thank you so much for your help and assistance.

The school is physically located in Davie right? How far is Hollywood? Ft Lauderdale? Davie apartments I guess are very close by... I don't want like a 20-30 minute commute ideally

can you still log into the scheduling portal? It looks like there are still a lot of seats to fill.

Oh I just went to my Sharklink portal and clicked on the COM calendar. It didn't tell me the seats that are left... just the days

Uhh what? That's gotta be a poorly executed joke or something..

I've done as much as I'm going to do until may, when you can actually sign a lease for a July move in. Signature, palm Trace, sunforest are the nicest within a mile of the school, within 3 miles are summerlake, viera plantation, plantation colony are all nice looking, and I'm also looking at some condos. Just google davie or plantation or cooper city apartments and you'll have plenty to sort through. Can't lease until May though so I have a basic list and will look again in May then go down and look at places. Apartment list app was particularly useful, otherwise tons of other options through google.

I live in Miami and when I went to the check out the places I also talked to people that I saw walking around about their impressions. Yelp and Google reviews also help. Granted, there are crazy people out there with out-of-this-world demands writing these reviews, but you take it with a grain of salt. For ex, I read that Palm Trace charges you not only for your water use but also for the water used to clean facilities. They have 3 pools so naturally this would piss me off. There are several apt buildings in Plantation that are less than 2.5 miles away, it all depends on your budget and roommate arrangements. In your case, I would try to pair up with someone who is closer to Davie and make the search easier. Several people from M2 and above have announced on FB that they have a place and are looking for a roommate. I ultimately settled for a house nearby campus and the rent is same or less than Palm Trace/Signature.

The closest apartments(minus sunforest which I don't know much about) all sound like they have random fees to make money. Water useage like you said, but also trash pickup "valets" that cost 25 a month and who apparently leave your garbage there to get attacked by animals/bugs, also palm trace is adjacent to a water treatment plant, so don't rent in one of the buildings closest to that. These places sound like typical apartments you find in college towns, money is priority number one and tenant satisfaction is way down below. You can get a 2BR for the same price as a 1BR a few miles out, and because these are farther from campus, the clientele is not 100% college students so the owners are more liable to make sure the apartments stay nice and their tenants happy.

Does anyone know how Nova send out their decisions? Via email or mail?

Its been a mixture this year. I received my acceptance by email but I know ppl who received it by mail first.

Has anyone interviewed on Feb 25? Any impressions?

Did anyone else get the email welcoming them to go to the open house in March. I'm pretty sure you have me hooked, that's why I applied. 🙁 I have a feeling this means I'm no longer being considered this year.

My friend told me about that email. I didn't get it though. Hmmm...

I got the same email....

What did the email say that makes you think that?

I have noticed accepted students on here talking about sharklink and what not and I was wondering if accepted students are supposed to be receiving instructions/information for this. I was accepted back in November and submitted my deposit prior to the December deadline. The checklist on webstar said that all of my requirements had been received other than transcripts. However, I have not had any type of communication from Nova since getting all my requirements in, other than an email a few weeks ago talking about who is eligible for Florida residence for tuition purposes. Is this normal?

Yes, that happened to me too. I had to go on to the sharklink site and request my info. There's nothing on there for us yet, so you haven't missed out. I got the residency email a few weeks ago too, nothing else. I think we probably won't get much else until March/April based on what M1s have said.

I know, I have been checking my email every 5 minutes today...
They told us that they will try to have an Adcom meeting this month, but its unlikely that they will get it done. We were told 6 weeks.

Im sorry if this question is a repeat, but can anyone tell me how long the interview lasts?
