Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay, just checked the portal and they updated it with my letters--I noticed they picked 3 letters (of the 6 included besides the committee cover letter) to use/read (they picked two science, one non-science, profs)...

...and the weird part is that they have my committee cover letter under the "Letter of Recomm. - Physician" category. Maybe the confusion comes from the fact that my committee cover letter writer is an MD, but that's not my physician letter--I shadowed a DO and asked him to write a letter that is included in my packet.

Anyone else have this happen to them? 😕 Guess I will have to call the school tomorrow and clarify which is the physician recommendation letter.

I am so confused how do you know what they received and what they did not. All I am able to see is a pdf image of my app. summary. Under requirements all I see is my aacomas app and my signature page.

I see the same thing as you Maybemed

Under "processed applications" on the portal I can click on "fall 2014," which brings up my application summary--and at the bottom of the application summary I see this:

Requirements
Requirement -- Received -- Note -- Status
AACOMAS Service Application -- date
Recommendation Letter 1 -- date -- prof 1 name here
Recommendation Letter 2 -- date -- prof 2 name here
Recommendation Letter 3 -- date -- prof 3 name here
Letter of Recomm. - Physician -- date -- committee writer name here
Signature Page -- date
MCAT Test Scores -- -- Test Date: date

You guys don't see that? Maybe Nova hasn't processed your letters of recc and such yet.

Very weird. AMCAS verified today. I am applying to only two schools for now and I already got their secondaries. Still nothing from Nova?

Jealous. AACOMAS has had my MCAT scores since June 24, and Nova still doesn't have them according to my page

I'm sure it's coming! I didn't receive my Nova secondary until nearly a week after my primary was verified.

Well I took the MCAT in January so my scores had been up for months before all these apps opened, haha. Individual schools are just slow at processing new scores and letters--I'm sure they'll update your portal soon. 🙂

Oh I haven't submitted my LORs yet. I didn't know you only get to see that summary when LORs are processed.

I thought NOVA reviews your app without LORs similar to LECOM?

No the LOR part of my app is new--they just edited my portal today and added my LOR info; before I just had notice of my submitted app and MCAT scores.

Idk whether they look at apps before letters come in or not, but you should have the rest of the requirements section in your portal. 😕

Gotcha. I hope so ! My letter packet got sent just recently and that one is already up.

I dont see anything about LORs :/

Yea I never saw anyting about LOR on the portal. They called me a while back and said I was complete and my application was going to be forwared to admissions committee for decision.

Got the secondary today and submitted it. As far as letters, I'm waiting on one of my science professors, should I submit my other letters now and submit his when he turns it in? BTW, for people who don't see anything regarding letters, me too, I'm just assuming we have to send them to admissions even though they didn't directly ask.

Got the same exact phone call.

I'm kind of indifferent about it. I'll have an earlier reviewed app, but I really think my LORs could really put me over the top since my stats are meh.

got the phone call too! i was in the middle of running an experiment when the lady called me. although i can't make much of the phone call, it made my day

I received a email from then saying they received my lor but when I go to that portal page it says nothing =\

I am calling NSU today. I took my MCAT in Jan. and it not on my app summary.

Oh fantastic, my uni emailed my LOR to the wrong address the admissions lady just sent it to the proper one.

Anyone having difficulty opening their application summary that was emailed?

Me too, I have the latest adobe reader and it says the file wasn't decoded properly or something like that. It won't let me put in a password. What's all in this email? Did you figure out how to open it?

Finally got the secondary. Did you guys have elaborate answers for the "How did you hear about Osteopathic medicine" question? Also, um, healthcare volunteering since high school... that's on my primary too right/

I copied and pasted activites, and wrote up a 500 char answer to the osteopathic medicine question. Not sure how much they were looking for but that seemed suitable, given that it didn't really say it was an essay, I was tempted to just put "internet" in that box.

Got the phone call, it really means nothing I guess, but it made my day regardless.

I can't recall,

During the NOVA secondary, did we fill out the list of names of letter writers?

I see Nova has my 3 letters, but I will be sending a my DO letter at the end of the month.
Was I supposed to create a placeholder for that DO letter?

If I did, I'm surprised I didn't.

I am just a bit worried as I see other people have "Physician Letter" as a headline for their secondary.

Thanks

If it was there, I missed it too. Pretty sure that wasn't on the secondary.

Anyone know of anyone getting in with a 6 in verbal. i got a 26 with a 6 in verbal.

Are you ESL? If so, then you have a shot maybe. NSU is pretty mcat heavy so they may have a post-secondary screening of subsection scores.

When does Nova start sending out interview invites? I haven't even begun my PS and ECs section, and am starting to panic! 😱

You can use the 2012 - 2013 thread for a lot referencing as far as dates go, but I looked at it for you since I was curious too.

First invites were on August 3rd (looks like a few people all got it on this date), with the earliest date you could interview being on August 23rd.

Edit: And get that app in ASAP. Rolling submissions, only gonna help. You don't have to wait for the MCAT to submit, and NSUCOM will even interview you without all of your LoRs in.

I'm a little confused on whether or not the requirements have to be completed prior to applying or prior to matriculation. On the secondary email it sounds like they are saying it has to be completed prior to applying but on the website it says that the requirements has to be completed prior to matriculation.

Wait so do you need LORs to be considered complete?

You do not need letters to receive an interview invite, but personally I would try to get them in before your actual interview to give yourself the best chance of getting in.

I know people get II's all the time without letters, I don't know if you can get acceptances without them.

I have sGPA 3.42, cGPA 3.23, SMP graduate GPA 3.95.
MCAT 29 (ps 12, bs 10, vs 7)
Do you think I have shot for this school?

Yes. You'd have a shot at many DO schools and even some MD schools if the SMP is an MD-affiliated SMP and there is no VR score cut-off.

Spoke with the Office of Admissions today; turns out that my DO letter was completely left out of my committee packet (!)--had to call my undergrad and have them upload that letter to VirtualEvals (which they accidentally didn't do before).

Thankfully, Nova does not seem to care whether the physician letter is from a DO or MD--and since my committee letter was written by an MD, my current Nova LOR status is fine regardless of the DO letter. 🙂

Glad I caught the missing letter now, though--some schools want a DO letter and my file would've been incomplete without that letter...

While they may seem to not care, I do believe a DO better is always better than an MD letter for DO schools.

Oh I agree; that's why I called and asked about my DO letter. I just figure at this point it's not worth it to call and bug them again; they should see the DO letter the next time they upload LOR.

I did the same thing this morning but they need to upload virtual evals for me again since a couple of letters also didn't make it in my packet, one of them being my DO letter.

Surprised to see some errors with VirtualEvals. I used Interfolio, but still you would think submitting letters electronically is straightforward. I guess not. Anyways I'm sure everything will get fixed. Good luck!

That makes me feel better; hopefully both our statuses will be fixed soon! 🙂

Actually the problem wasn't with VirtualEvals--it was with my undergrad committee, who forgot to include the DO letter in my packet (all the other letters got included). It was an easy enough fix--I just had to call the person in charge of my letter packet and have them upload the DO letter to my VirtualEvals letter packet.

And thanks!

Ah, sorry... that makes sense. My brain still hurts from this morning's exam.

You all have done yourselves a great service by applying early and submitting LORs quickly.

No worries! Are you currently a student at Nova?

I hope so; one always worries about not getting accepted anywhere. 🙁 I like to have choices, too--I figured the sooner I got all my stuff in, the better my odds everywhere.

I'm an M2.

Having been rejected from more than 30 schools (MD and DO), I assure you I know how it feels. It's great to have choices and I hope you guys get that opportunity. Applying early is imperative for Nova.

Oh awesome! If I get an interview with Nova I'll be sure to ask you questions about the area/interview format/etc. 🙂

Yeah that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid...Glad it worked out for you in the end, though! Hope things work out well for me too.

I'll be around along with some incoming M1s. There must always be a Shark in SDN Novafell.

Where there's a will there's a way!
