Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How long did it take for you all to get your secondary after the Tuesday your app was sent to schools?

Just submitted my secondary and LORs. Anyone know of an accepted student or have any idea about getting an interview with a 3.5 cGPA, 3.95 sGPA, 24 MCAT? I'm retaking the MCAT in a few weeks, but hoping to get an interview invite before my retake.

so my file looks like it is complete- there are dates received next to my letters of rec and mcat. However, I haven't received a phone call yet about the completion of my app. Should I call them to make sure its complete?

I missed a call from them today, they left a voicemail, but I couldn't understand what the guy was saying. I'll call tomorrow to find out. I submitted my secondary yesterday and my LORs a few hours ago.

Hi Everyone!

This is my first post. I have been a lurker for a long while but now that I am preparing to apply I have some questions of my own to try at.

Today was the big day for some of us test takers and my score turned out to be a 23. I'm not entirely disappointed in this considering I earned this score with about a month of intense studying.

I know it's not the best but what are the odds with a 3.9 GPA? (both sci/cumulative)

More importantly, I see many students asking if they should "re-take" and I am wondering how this works. Do they go ahead and apply and then list on the application they are re-taking? Do they (NSUCOM) wait for the re-take before reviewing the application and thus would it not matter that I gained a month of app time anyway? If not, is it better to wait until the 2nd week of September when I could apply with a few points increase due to a re-take or is it better to apply now with my current score and GPA?

Nova is an MCAT heavy school so definitely retake and score at least 26. If you list on your app that you're retaking, they will postpone your application until your score is released.

I know Nova is a popular DO school, but I promise that there will still be spots available for a while so I highly suggest a retake. Also with that GPA and a 28+ MCAT, you will definitely get MD love (especially from state schools unless California).

finally got my letters sent,

my stats are 3.5cgpa 3.5sgpa and 28Q, NC resident

I just received an email with the electronic copy of my web application, but I can't open it... Anyone else having this issue?

I tried using Safari and Firefox, but neither seem to work

I could access it using Firefox--did you enter the correct password?

Anyone know if they are receptive to "in the area"? Will be in FL in august for an interview and would like to interview at NOVA also at the same time.

I will make plans to re-take then. What deadline usually becomes wait list territory for this school?

I forgot to ask about the required coursework. You can still apply if you are missing a required course as long as you will have it completed by matriculation, correct?

Correct 🙂

Interviews in late February/March tend to be more difficult. By that time a HUGE chunk of seats have been taken with deposits paid. For Nova the earlier you interview, the better your chances. I can't stress that enough.

Neuro, do you know people that live in the graduate housing there? How is it compared to living in say a 10 mile radius as far as price and convenience?

I do know some people that live in the graduate housing, but I haven't asked their opinions. I think you're talking about Rolling Hills, right? There are TONS of apartments within 10 miles of campus, but just keep in mind that for morning traffic 7:30-8:30, every mile adds about 10 minutes to your drive. There are plenty within 5 miles and quite a few across the street from HPD.

I applied with my April MCAT score, but I'm retaking it on August.... I called today to see if they put my application on hold until the new score comes up... They WON'T, so if you want them to review your application again once the new score is up you need to give them a call...

Heads up!!!! for those on the same boat as me

I don't know if this is an obvious question, but when medical schools start sending interview invites, do they just do it in order of people who were ready for review, or is it based on competitiveness of people who are ready for review(regardless of order)?

Just received my secondary, I don't like the website form because some of the info is redundant and unorganized, but oh well let's do this.

So did anyone ever call to see if shadowing actually counts as volunteering for this secondary? Also, I'm not sure if this is a stretch but do you think an (unpaid) clinical research/shadowing experience counts towards this section?

Thanks

No, and no.

Where does this notion that shadowing = volunteering originate? It's nonsense.

I thought the same thing, but I saw other people in this thread listed it on their secondaries so I figured maybe nova said it was relevant. That's why I specifically asked if people called them to see if it was..

I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask to be perfectly clear if it is somewhat ambiguous. What categories do they currently have for your activities?

I'm guessing it won't make or break you either way. They still have your primary too. For my sanity's sake, I have to believe they look at that as well.

It's just listing health-care related volunteer experiences. I just listed 2 actual volunteer experiences.

Like asanch said they do have my primary, and honestly when it comes down to it shadowing is not volunteering.

I see. They should really separate them into Volunteer, Paid Clinical, Unpaid Clinical Experiences so there is no confusion causing a bunch of people to waste their time calling to ask a minor question. If you've called Nova then you know what I'm talking about. It's like dealing with dial-up: you better have something else to do while you wait. 🙄 Anyways, a physician letter would indicate that you have shadowed to some degree... so there shouldn't be any worry about it.

Good luck this cycle.

Thanks! One of my top schools right here!

I have 3.25sGPA, 3.46cGPA, 27 MCAT. Is it too late to apply to this school?

The school averages 3.4/28. Remember it's just average, people with higher got in and people with lower stats got it. I think you should be fine.

Man, I wonder why NSU is so popular compared to other DO schools here on SDN. It isn't necessarily the "best" DO school and the tuition is on the high side (as well as the cost of living).

Must be the South Florida weather.

Yea, you can't beat our 90 degree/90% humidity down here 🙂

If it is the weather, WesternCOMP should win the prize 🙂

Just got an II!

Here too! I did not think I would get iis from both Florida schools; debating on what to do because flights to FL from my home are $400+ and Nova's ii dates are weeks after LECOM's...

II

For those interested:
Secondary recieved: 6/26
Secondary Submitted: 6/27
II: 7/26
GPAs: 3.5-3.6
MCAT: 27-32

Congrats to everyone! Not a bad way to start a Friday. 🙂

Maybe try calling LECOM and telling them the situation? They might be willing to work with you and move the date so that you can hit both interviews and save on flight fare.
